The Door to a Second Chance speaks volumes, doesn't it? The open-door leader has a responsibility to the enterprise as well as to the individual. The leader has to be thoughtful with authority to give someone a second chance.
The essence of a second chance could involve strategic forgiveness which recognizes that the person who gets the second chance could change from being destructive to constructive behavior. How do you know if the second chance should be permitted? Bill offers some guidance for that determination. In this chapter we learn the way to a stronger, more diverse organization is through opening doors for people who are not just like us.

Even an abridgment couldn't cover the methods and practices brought out in the book, so if you want to be an awesome leader who opens doors of opportunity, I hope you will pick up a copy of the book. I was given a copy of this book. This is not what I would call an academic book. This falls more into the motivational realm of leadership books. In the writing, Treasurer does have a very friendly tone, which raises this a bit above the normal leadership book. I appreciated the story of his son becoming class president, and who saw his role as opening doors. I also appreciated the personal stories that Treasurer shared.

It is easy to tell that Bill Treasurer is a leader that you can trust and would love to work for. He is giving all the profits of this book to charity! He hits on the life significance one can gain while leading others. Getting great results is what we want but at the end of the day and looking into mirror This book helps quantify the answers we have in our hearts and puts real application to it.
My key thoughts This is a great book! My key thoughts I found in the book were in 5 "knows. If you are looking for a quick and challenging read that will make a difference for your leadership as well as helping out a great charity. Bill does a very nice job at simplifying the concept of leading by focusing on the members of the team and their opportunities instead of the gaps and tasks to be done.
Idea like bringing someone with you to important meetings to give them exposure to more strategic conversations. Or the concept of pushing someone to perform a difficult tasks to battle their fear of failure with you on a supporting role. The gist of the book can be wrapped up in the book's title. Leaders Open Doors for people, their colleagues, subordinates, customers, vendors, etc.
If leaders can remember this simple mantra and then open doors for others, they will truly be amazing leaders. We will want to follow them. By creating safety, the leader helps people become comfortable with being uncomfortable. How does a leader restore confidence in someone who is discouraged? How do leaders shift perspective in others?
Generally speaking, people are creatures of habit.
We can become quite narrow and restricted in our thinking, partly through habituated or routinized behavior. The more we do something, especially when we do it well, the more we limit our choices to do it differently or more imaginatively. A leader can mitigate the tendency to see the world in a narrow way a number of ways. First, by how he or she communicates. Yet the senior managers spent too much time being tactical and operational and not enough time being strategic or innovative.
What the owner wanted was more leadership and less management. So he change the title of the role to more clearly align with his expectations. That small language shift was critical toward getting people to shift their perceptions of their role in the organization. Leadership comes with an ever-present danger of the leader starting to think he or she is more important than other people. Sure, people want to follow leaders who are confident.
