This Week @ TBO:

In this, I am especially influenced by liberation theology - theology that liberates theology to do what it should do. In choosing what issues to work on, I therefore ask questions like: In recent years, it has been the last of these questions that most binds my work together. To do human ecology, like doing theology, is to pull on a tangled ball of string. You cannot unravel one loop until you've understood the network of connections. For me, such interconnection is the essence of reality and the basis of consciousness. It is about the spiritual, which is to say, life as love made manifest.

It is the innermost structure that underpins the outer forms of things, including their psychology, ecology, politics, economics and forms of collective religious expression. That is why I believe that what the world most needs today is a deepening of spiritual vision. Science gives outer sight, but spirituality complements this with insight. Such understanding is the key to my work and ability to maintain hope, even where the grounds for optimism might be frayed.

Born in , all of my school education took place in the community where I was raised, on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides or Western Isles. A traditional Scottish education allows for a generalist worldview. I hold a BSc in geography from the University of Aberdeen submajoring in psychology and moral philosophy, a financial MBA from the University of Edinburgh , and a PhD by published works in liberation theology, land reform and community empowerment from the Academy of Irish Cultural Heritages, University of Ulster For a CV and short bio see here.

My work is mainly represented through the books and articles linked from the tabs along the top of this page. The best known are Soil and Soul: Climate Change, Hope and the Human Condition My books have variously been described as "world-changing" by George Monbiot, "inspirational" by Rowan Williams while Archbishop of Canterbury, "careful, sober reasoning" by the philosopher Mary Midgley, and "truly mental" by the singer Thom Yorke of Radiohead.

My two most recent books draw together much of my life's work. It is a practical guide, based on a quarter century of postgraduate teaching, and was named Book of the Year by Sir Jonathan Porritt, formerly chair of the UK Government's Sustainable Development Commission. It breaks through into an ecology of the imagination, and spiritual insights for the third millennium. My best-known work includes Scottish land reform as commenced with the Isle of Eigg - present , the Harris superquarry battle - , the spirituality of community, identity, belonging and place - present , nonviolence and understanding war - present , the psychospirituality of climate change to present , and radical human ecology - present.

We now have good broadband so I am able to connect for online talks and presentations if required. Over the five years - I published a book every year. I hit the age of sixty during that time, so it was a period for pulling much together. People ask what major campaign I'm working on. Right now, I'm just letting some dust settle and working inwardly on spiritual vision. I find that I am spending about half of my time dealing with correspondence and visitors.

It is a joy to get such feedback, though I often struggle to cope with it efficiently. I am, however, giving priority of time to young activists and scholars masters and doctorate candidates working with social, environmental or religious change. A highlight of will be the celebrations in June of the 20th anniversary of the community land buy-out on the Isle of Eigg.

It was a joy to be asked by the community to write the foreword for their commemorative brochure and to speak on the island during the week-long festivities. In short, life is good for this old-timer activist. I wonder what's next? If you need to discuss something that requires much thought I prefer an email first if possible to arrange a mutually convenient calling time. I am on Skype, Facetime and WhattsApp but unless it is a pressing matter please first arrange any call by email or text. Of the masses of scrolls looted and confiscated by the Nazis from some synagogues in Bohemia and Moravia, close to 2, were stored in the Jewish Museum in Prague, where they remained till , and were then transferred by the Communist regime to the Michle synagogue where they were crudely stacked and more or less abandoned.

Somewhere along the line it became known that Jewish ritual objects were in storage at the Michle synagogue, and when the situation was investigated 1, scrolls and Torah binders were discovered. In , the Czech government allowed Eric Estorick, a London art collector, to acquire the scrolls and the binders, which he did with the help of philanthropist Ralph Yablon, who financed the acquisition.

The scrolls were brought to London in , and were given a temporary home at the Westminster Synagogue where the Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust was established.

This Week @ TBO:

Some of these scrolls form part of a permanent exhibition at the Westminster Synagogue, while others, after being repaired, were distributed on permanent loan to congregations and Jewish institutions around the world. Each scroll has a number and a brass plaque. In addition, each is accompanied by a certificate detailing its place of origin.

Opinion in Lithuania was divided. Others said that after all the suffering that the Jews had endured they should be allowed to take possession of objects that were holy to them. The scrolls were transferred in January to an Israeli delegation headed by Lau and Rabbi Michael Melchior, who was then deputy foreign minister. Melchior said at the time that a museum was not a place for a Torah, and that each Torah deserved to be part of Jewish life. In the interim, individual scrolls and small collections of scrolls were found in various parts of Europe where Jewish communities had been decimated or completely destroyed by the Nazis.

Over the past two or three years, Torah scrolls that survived the Holocaust in Romania have also become available for use in synagogues in Israel and around the globe.

They are sent for examination to the Jerusalem-based Menorah Foundation, whose scholars determine whether they are suitable for use or whether they need to be restored. It was one of these scrolls that was presented by Young Israel to the Sirkin army base. The presentation was perhaps more meaningful than previous presentations not only because it was a scroll rescued from the Holocaust, but because it was in memory of Ruby Davidman, a staunch second-generation Young Israel activist who had died a year earlier and whose grandson Amit is a soldier serving at Sirkin.

An ardent Zionist from his childhood, Davidman, while a student at Yeshiva University in , helped to smuggle guns to the nascent State of Israel, Young Israel said. Davidman, his wife, Phyllis, and their three children, Lenny, Cindy and Jonathan, moved from New York to Beersheba in the summer of Davidman immediately became active in the community and formed a Young Israel congregation. After two years, the family moved to Jerusalem, where he remained until his death. Davidman had enormous pride in the brave young soldiers of the IDF, and considered each and every one of them to be a hero, said his family and friends.

He had previously started a Purim packages for the IDF project, but the dedication of Torah scrolls gave him infinitely more pleasure. Tips that can help you to enjoy your holiday.
