This book had been sat on my Kindle waiting for me to finally reach it for an absolute ageeeeee, so when I finally did, I dived in with much enthusiasm. Since reading Coming Up Roses by this author, I'd been dying to sink my teeth into something more, so rather than waiting for her upcoming novel, Sealed with a Kiss became the perfect alternative.
I fell in love with the cover at first sight, even more so with the blurb, and couldn't wait to see what the author had in store for me. I think, at some point in our lives, we've all been in Rachael's heroine's shoes. Kate knows she needs a fresh start, away from everything that's gone before, and so when she spots the advertisement in a magazine for the position as 'Girl Friday', complete with serviced cottage, on a country estate in Scotland, she jumps at the chance to break free and begin afresh.
I loved Kate almost immediately. I found her courage to leave and find something new and exciting in life encouraging as well as admirable, and after I'd read about her experiences in her relationship with her boyfriend, I wanted her to get away too. It was obvious that she needed something more from life, which is never a bad thing in my eyes.
Once I knew that Kate was going to indeed take the job, I couldn't wait to see where her adventures would take her. Rachael's setting of the Scottish island, Auchenmor, provided a wondrous backdrop for Kate's story to unravel in. The hills and mountains only heightened the sense of seclusion for me, and I had a perfect image of the area in my mind right the way through my reading of this novel. Alongside the sea and the seals, which came into the book later, it really was like an island get-away, and I would have loved nothing more than to have joined Kate as she began to settle in and be introduced to her new neighbours.
I really enjoyed reading as Kate began to find her way, alongside new-found friendships and attractions, and started to feel at home on the island, a sense of wanting to belong following her character right the way through. The other characters of the island were a wonderful and quirky mish-mash who heightened the sense of new beginnings and friendships, and allowed smaller secondary stories within Kate's to take place. There was always something going on within this novel, always something to look forward to or think about. With chemistry and clashing personalities added into the mix mainly from the Lord of the Manor, Roderick , this was a brilliantly written novel that had me in giggles and smiles.
Light-hearted, engaging and fun, with some tender moments written in too, this was the perfect escape for me! I adore Rachael's writing style, sense of humour and instantly likeable characters, and really can't wait for her next offering for readers. Her style is warm and witty, cosy and sweet, and has left me feeling like I'm capable of anything, just like Kate. Thank you for such a wonderful story, Rachael. One person found this helpful. It started rather slowly, perked up in the middle, then petered out a bit at the end. I enjoyed it well enough but it just didn't wow me. Kate was quite a likable heroine - a bit lost after breaking up with a long term boyfriend and returning home to live with her well meaning but somewhat overbearing mother before taking up a job on the island. I had to keep reminding myself that she was only meant to be twenty six though - she seemed a good ten years older.
Crucially though there just wasn't enough spark between them. My own preference is for both. Here I got neither. It really felt as if Roderick latched on to Kate as the only woman he'd ever remotely fancied who'd actually want to stay on the island. The chemistry just wasn't there in sufficient quantities. I liked how they all lived almost as one big extended family and it's a credit to the author that she could make it sound remotely appealing no pun intended when the reality would be anything but.
I've just found out that this is Rachael Lucas' debut novel This novel hits all the right notes. We have a believable reason for our heroine to want out of her situation and though the location and purpose of her move stretch the believability a tad, I rapidly came to the conclusion that this was down to jealousy. Simba's daughter is the key to a resolution of a bitter feud between Simba's pride and the outcast pride led by the mate of Scar.

But the plan goes afoul and it's a desperate race to the end. With the help of their friends Friar Lawrence and Kissy, the kissing fish, the day is saved and the young lovers are reunited.
Sealed With a Kiss is the ageless tale of love and prejudice set in an undersea world. A film that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Written by Phil Nibbelink. Sealed With a Kiss is a traditional fully-animated film, with seals doing Shakespeare. I admit that like many others, I wasn't totally sold on the concept, but then when you get down to it The Lion King was basically Hamlet with lions, and few seemed to have a problem with that.
Turned out to be quite a fun little movie. While the dialogue is modern, the film has a few of the characters quoting famous Shakespearian lines, but in a way that shouldn't alienate children.
Perfect Match - Sealed with a Kiss | LeChat Nails
It's more of a comedic thing. The story gets going straight away, with rivalry between the 2 groups of seals. This is part about racism, but for the most part, an old-fashioned feud. I was worried going in that the romance would be forced and sappy.
Sealed With a Kiss Series
Well maybe it is a little sappy, but it's sweet, and sincerely handled. As in the play, it's love at first sight. Two of the songs near the start were, I thought rather weak, but they at least progressed the story. As the film gets going, there are fewer songs.
Unlike the play, the film is light in tone and has many comedic elements. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments but some of Mercutio's puns are groan inducing even the characters in the film seem to think so. As you would expect, liberties are taken most notably the ending , and it isn't weighed down like some adaptations. I was particularly interested to see how the animation turned out, as it has emerged that this film is that rarest of things: Phil Nibbelink wrote, directed and animated every frame of the film over the course of 5 years.
Despite this, it is remarkably well animated.
Well drawn fluid cartoony animation. It's not quite of the level of a top notch Disney animated film, but it comes very close, indeed far closer than I would have ever dreamed possible for a one-man effort. A few shortcuts are taken, but there are a surprising number of scenes animated on ones which takes twice as many drawings as is usually necessary.
This means the animation can be that extra bit more fluid. Some shortcuts can be seen in some of the background characters and effects animation, but this is generally where it matters least.

The important stuff, the character animation, is top notch, what you would expect from a strong Disney animator which is what Nibbelink spent a decade working as. The backgrounds are soft-focus simple and uncluttered to frame the character animation. In a few cases these are perhaps a little rushed, but all in all, they set the atmosphere and do the job. Even with the lighter tone, it still manages strong dramatic moments. Despite the villain of the piece being a doofus played mostly for laughs, he nevertheless adds menace to the proceedings.
There's nothing here that should bother small children, and they should have no trouble following the storyline. While the film aims at a young audience that may not yet be ready for this kind of romance, there should be enough action and comedy to keep them entertained.
