I didn't like the author's style much and I especially found much of his editorializing and opinion irritating, but I really liked seeing what the prophets as people were like and what they did to "build the kingdom.

Probably more so than I would have enjoyed the book, because these were the original lectures with Bro.
Some of the stories I was familiar with. Others I was not. But I gained a lot from hearing how these wonderful men and leaders lived their lives, inspiring me more in ways I would like to be and giving me courage and confidence that I can be that way. It gave me a better understanding and appreciation for the men God raises up to be His prophets in the latter-days. It was very interesting to me to read about each prophet and the unique opportunities and responsibilities they were given in their "growing years" to mold them into the prophet the Lord needed them to be for the time and circumstance in which they served. Madsen uses several lesser-known examples and first-hand experiences in his teachings.
I did give the hardcover four stars but am bumping it to five after going through the audio book. Very inspiring and it really gives you faith in the type of very human people who the Lord chooses to fulfill his purposes. Jun 21, Mariel rated it it was amazing. One of the most valuable to me books that I own. It goes through each prophet I really started to feel a love for each of the prophets and have gained so much knowledge from this book. There are sooooo many inspiring stories in here.

Truman Madsen is so knowledgeable and personally had a relationship with a number of the prophets. Apr 18, Rebecca rated it it was amazing Shelves: Extremely interesting book with a conversational writing style. Madsen informs, educates, inspires, and provides personal insight into the lives of the prophets, many of whom he knew personally.
Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to develop a greater understanding of and closer relationship to the prophets.

I learned even more that in becoming great, there are often problems that try a person. Calling them trials almost seems trivial since we use that word a lot.

It had great insight into each of the prophets lives and teachings. Brother Madsen is a great author and historian. I have gained a new understanding of each of the prophets and my testimony of each has grown. I deeply love each of these men who have given their lives to the cause of Christ. Words to Live By. The Scholar of Moab. Sorry but this is not a good stand alone audio recording. I had to skip the Joseph Smith chapter because the audio recording was so terrible, complete with crying babies in the background. Went to Chapter 2 and they didn't edit out the "Change the cd" with the music. I couldn't finish the book. Excellent research and so much information in several short talks. The man is amazing. I thought I knew a lot about these blessed men, but learned much more through this series. God bless him for his tremendous efforts. This set of lectures is as good as his lectures on the prophet Joseph Smith.
He obviously has less time to cover each prophet as he did in the Joseph Smith lectures but this set of lectures is absolutely amazing. The stories told in these lectures will bring you closer to each prophet as an individual and help you better understand the gospel of Jesus Christ. These CD's are fantastic, but if you are expecting it to be like his first famous Joseph Smith tapes they simply are not.
I'm not saying they should be, but I was hoping. Very good very insightful, but if the JS tapes are a five then this is a four.
