John Hay was private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and was at the president's deathbed. After the war he worked in Europe for a spell, including Spain, where he wrote these observations on the capital Madrid and its surrounding towns. According to Hay, the gloomy Philip II 'chose Madrid simply because it was cheerless and bare and of ophthalmic ugliness. Of course it has changed a lot in the one hundred and fifty years since Hay was there.
Similarly, Hay John Hay was private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and was at the president's deathbed. Similarly, Hay dubs the Escorial in San Lorenzo 'the most cheerless monument in existence. The poor chap had two things against him: Hay's republicanism means that he had a dim view of Spanish history and 'the triple curse of crown, crozier, and sabre'.
Spain had just experienced its Golden Revolution of when Hay arrived, but it didn't last long before the monarchy were back. At heart the Spanish - and in particular the Castilians - had long been slavishly deferent to tradition: Hay had some kinder words for the Spanish ladies, but even then he couldn't resist a poke at the fundamental lack of enlightenment in Castilian society: They have a quicker and more active intelligence than the men.
Reading the history books, the Spanish ruling elite really were a pack of luxuriant scoundrels back then. Mind you, Hay himself was criticised for his love of expensive indulgence by his political enemies.

Maybe he would have built his own version of the Escorial if he had the opportunity? He does at least pay the Prado rightful due as the greatest art gallery in the world, although I did notice that he mistook Zubaran's The Apparition of St. Peter Nolasco for a painting of a crucified Christ upside down.
