I have a Siamese cat, and he's pretty vocal and seems to respond to my meows. I used to have a Siamese and still have an oriental shorthair. Both of them will meow or yowl just because they feel like it. They're very good at finding the most annoying noises to get your attention. I taught my Siamese to change his meow to mom It was a lot of work but he eventually did it!
It was creepy but awesome! Apparently domestic cats evolved a cute, pleasant meow. Their more wild brethren had a deeper, more guttural meow that's less effective in manipulating impressionable humans like me. Sometimes when I meow at my cat he looks back and meows in a way that sounds like "bro, you sound like a retard. If so, cheers yo! I'm good no worries.
Lol my cat did the same thing last night. Two stray cats were screaming bloody murder outside and his eyes bulged wide open, and started to scan his surroundings. I tried petting him to calm him down but he sometimes stared at the wall or ceiling still looking freaked out haha! I heard that mother cats lick their kittens to calm them down. Maybe I'm wrong but thanks! Now it makes more sense, thanks! I guess we do it too when a kid falls over, we shouldn't gasp or run straight to help them otherwise they will definitely cry lol.
I've been gone from home for a few months, and when my mom put me on speakerphone my cat started perking up and scanning the room for me.
I think he actually misses me. All this video shows is that a dog makes a certain sound upon command The sound so-happens to mimic the pattern that is as much "I love you" as any numerous alternatives. I thought it was just a coincidence that my dog sounds like its saying hello whenever I come home.
To add onto that Apparently they can purr at a frequency close to that of a crying baby, triggering our maternal instincts and forcing us to nurture them.

I have four cats. When one comes in the cat flap and passes another cat, there's usually a very short meow from each of them in turn, like they are both saying "hey" to each other. Yeah, it's from this one clip from an old cartoon where a few big cats are pacing in a cage in a zoo and just saying that to each other. I bet my parents still have that VHS tape somewhere. I doubt we make sense to them, but I'm pretty sure my cat is mimicking me mimicking him, since he often replies in a similar way.
Read a while back that cats have learned how to make noises that we think are cute, little manipulative felines I have a cat and as she got older, she knows the smaller and more squeakier her meows become, the more cute she is which equals more treats. Now she sounds like a squeak toy. Sometimes when mine is very loud and I shoosh him, he proceeds in an almost whisper-like meow. If your cat grew up in your home, there shouldn't be any real language to the meowing other than what your cat has worked out with you.
Just as humans don't automatically know English unless they work it out with other people as they grow up. We have a rather elderly cat he's 13 but his breed can live to be 25 that does not meow. Rather, he can't meow. When he's hungry, he opens his mouth and this small, raspy noise comes out I compare it to a cartoon character eating an apple. So when we rescued a kitten from under our shed, I was very interested to see if she would meow at all.

Our older cat a male named Bela like the Bartok or Lugosi seemed to just ignore her, which we expected as he's very chill as it is. Then they started to cuddle together and he would clean her, all sorts of cuteness. But I'll be damned if I've ever heard the kitten meow. It's been two years and the most we hear out of her are these wonderful little chirping noises that sound like a higher-pitch version of the anti-meow the other one has, but they don't actually require her to open her mouth like a real meow would.
This would seem to imply meowing is a learned trait.

The only other cat in her life never meows because he can't so she doesn't understand its use as a communication tool with us she prefers attacking our feet and shredding our futon. No, do NOT go out and buy it.
It is a very dry, clinical textbook. Of course, like any good textbook, it fails to specifically answer my question: At what age do kittens start to meow? But it has multiple references to kittens meowing if they become cold, hungry, trapped or cannot reach the nipple, as early as when they are 4 hours old.
So, I conclude from this that meowing is NOT a learned behavior, but innate. In case you were wondering, kittens can purr immediately after birth, too.

I think making noise to get attention in general is a "baby" trait of most at least land, I'm not even going to attempt hypothesizing about sea animals animals. I have two hand raised cats, one of which i raised myself and the other was raised by an animal shelter, and both are meowing like hell. It doesn't seem to be a learned trait, just a Character Thing. My Mom's cats, both raised with their siblings are very quiet. I can even talk to my cats But it doesn't matter if i meow at them or talk to them, they're answering on both equal happily.
So i guess they won't understand what we are meowing, but they clearly understand that you are adressing them with your strange noises. I always just figured that my cats would respond to my meows out of pity -- "Oh! Listen to the poor thing! He can barely speak properly; we'd better teach him how to do it right She was a gift from a friend that had many cats. This beautiful girls meows rarely. Its more like a "howl": We found this one in a garbage can.
He had no more than a day since birth.
The only sounds he make is when my mother talks to him or when he sees my mother after she has been a few days out. His sounds is like "Ah! Like he wants to meow but he does not know how. This was a stray cat that I rescued. She already had about 2 years. This is quite a vocal kitty. She "meows", but the sound is more like "waahhhhh! I can "speak" her language quite fluently.
