Unfolding in four sections: Her poems convey a painter's gaze, alert to subtlety of colour, tone; their sculptural presentation on the page gives visual pause, pace, emphasis. They ask to be read aloud. I listen for Soutar-Hynes' voice: Westbound' ; her musings—that like moving currents—are 'spidered paths,' and lines falling "out of true. She issues a plea to 'honour fissures' and 'take an axe to craft [to] replace resin with transparency.

In the end, Soutar-Hynes turns to the 'Heartwood' of the final section: Arresting Hope reminds us that prisons are not only places of punishment, marginalization, and trauma, but that they can also be places of hope, blessing even, where people with difficult lived experiences can begin to compose stories full of healing, anticipation, communication, education, connection, and community.

The book tells a story about women in a provincial prison in Canada, about how creative leadership fostered opportunities for transformation and hope, and about how engaging in research and writing contributed to healing. The book includes poetry, stories, letters, interviews, fragments of conversations, reflections, memories, quotations, journal entries, creative nonfiction, and scholarly research. Out of multiple and diverse possibilities involving many people, Arresting Hope is focused on five women—a prison doctor, a prison warden, a prison recreation therapist, a prison educator, and a prison inmate—and their stories of grief, desire, and hope.

Like the many surfaces of a gemstone, the varied aspects of human experience link the short stories in this collection, titled Aspects of Nature. The remaining stories show aspects of nature in their diverse guises: Each carves its own world in language, the mordant humour omnipresent but never intrusive, the dialogue at times pitch perfect a rare gift. The stories are memorable for the insights, images, beauty that they capture and convey in words.

With the publication of this book, Canadian literature gains a fresh, new voice, a voice to be listened to and praised.
