But he felt no more at ease with excess than he did with constraint. As he once put it: And that dislocation first showed up in Taxi Driver , where there literally was a pane of glass between the character and the world. Richard looked at me and said: His brother, Leonard, with whom he wrote Blue Collar , was also in a crazed state, and the pair of them fell out in such a damaging way that they never really repaired the relationship before Leonard died 10 years ago.
Things came to a head for Schrader in Hollywood with Cat People , the erotic horror film he directed starring Nastassja Kinski. Schrader was consuming a gram of cocaine a day. Everyone on the set was doing drugs aside from Kinski. Again as Schrader told Biskind: My AD [assistant director] came in to get me. He started doing drugs. The second AD came in to try and get us both out. Schrader also had an on-set affair with Kinski, which she broke off towards the end of the film, leaving Schrader embittered and obsessed.
According to the writer-director John Milius, Schrader pursued Kinski to Paris, where he found her with a young stud. Milius told Biskind that Kinski explained: And with you it was difficult. It should be said that, while he stands by what he told Biskind himself, Schrader disputes many other stories in the book as gossip and hearsay.
Of his decision to leave LA, Schrader tells me: There was a gun involved. Sell the house, sell the furniture, sell it all. I thought all my drug friends were in Los Angeles. But they had drug friends there too! Japan at that time was a drug-free country. But it took a while. Took about eight or nine years [to get off drugs]. But perhaps his finest hour was the drama Affliction , which he again wrote and directed. It featured a tormented father and son relationship and starred Nick Nolte and James Coburn, the latter winning an Oscar for his role.
What for, I ask? But it was a life or death situation for me.
Dog Eat Dog
Maybe I was too cruel. His first love in film was what he calls the intellectual European cinema of the 60s — Antonioni, Bergman, Godard, Truffaut et al. Considered one of the earliest bands to fuse hardcore punk and rap music , [1] Dog Eat Dog has achieved commercial success with singles such as "No Fronts", "Expect the Unexpected" and "Who's the King".
Since their first album, the band's sound has evolved to incorporate elements of funk , ska and hip hop. Soon after the album's release, guitarist Dan Nastasi quit Mucky Pup to help form the band Non-Fiction with former members of the band Hades and to briefly join Murphy's Law. Sean Kilkenny was a friend of Mucky Pup's who would occasionally play guitar with the band at social gatherings. His friendship and experience with the band led to his being hired as Nastasi's replacement. Kilkenny performed with the band for several New Jersey area shows before joining them on a European tour as well.
Neabore and Kilkenny began writing music together for Mucky Pup. When the music didn't quite fit Mucky Pup's style, the two friends decided to form their own band. It wasn't long before friend and former Mucky Pup crew member, John Connor joined the duo on vocals. Connor had already been a vocalist for several local bands and together, the trio wrote songs like "Funnel King", "Strip Song", and "Psychorama.
Brett brought life to the songs that the trio had been playing acoustically for weeks. After several rehearsals, they held their first "official" performance in Neabore's basement on April 1, The band packed fifty people into Neabore's basement and held a toga party. Kevin Reilly, a band friend, was invited to perform with the band on saxophone. Following a positive reaction from friends, the band began playing birthday parties, ice cream parlors, and college fraternity houses.

After hearing several live recordings, Dan Nastasi expressed his interest in playing with the band and was invited to bring his equipment to one of their band practices. The practice sessions were fruitful and Nastasi was asked to join the band. The band also felt it was time to decide on a permanent name. Dog Eat Dog was suggested as a name and the band agreed to keep it. Dog Eat Dog decided to record their songs and entered the studio for two days. The result was their first five-song demo. Kilkenny's contacts with pro skateboarder, Andy Howell, led to several logo ideas, including the doghouse image used by the band for many years.
During the shows that followed, Mark Marri joined as the new drummer. Marri decided not to sign the deal, instead opting to spend time with his wife and child. Although the band now had a record deal, they were once again in search of a new drummer. After trying out only a few hopefuls, Dave "Mopey" Maltby auditioned and was officially hired as the new drummer.
The band also found a more serious saxophone player in Scott "Sooty" Mueller who, while not yet a full-time member, would become a frequent guest player at live shows. The title was a lighthearted jab at the band Warrant for releasing an album titled Dog Eat Dog almost a year before. Dog Eat Dog began writing the songs that would become their first full-length album, All Boro Kings released on May 24, The band had grown from their experiences and sharpened their skills as musicians.

All Boro Kings also brought the saxophone into the foreground of their songs. With the release of the album, Nastasi decided he could no longer tour for long periods of time due to family and business obligations. The band hired Parris Mayhew of the Cro-Mags , to temporarily fill the position with the intention of bringing back Nastasi for local touring and recording. With a new record in stores, the band toured Europe, once again opening for Biohazard.
They received critical acclaim for both the new album and their live performances. All Boro Kings went on to sell over , records worldwide. After the tour, Mayhew returned to directing videos as well as forming his new band, White Devil. Being familiar with the material, he accepted.
It was then that Maltby also decided to part ways with the band for personal reasons.

Scott Mueller was also brought on as a full-time saxophone player. The band had always stood out from other hardcore bands because of their addition of a saxophone player. For a good portion of their live shows, as well as their two studio albums, Mueller had held the position. While the albums would list Mueller as a guest musician, he had never been considered a full-time member of the band until now.
MTV would prove to be one factor that would help the band achieve its status. While they were relegated to small clubs at home in America, they were playing festivals and arena-sized shows in Europe, the biggest being the Dynamo Open Air festival in But eventually fairly early tbh the script runs out of steam and it takes a more serious not so comedic at least turn but more so goes all over the place with little to no coherency at times. I can't help but to think that this movie must have been at least 30 minutes longer but edited down to the point where one minute for instance a person is caught by the police and the next he's free with no explanation as to how this happened.
Not that I think that the movie being 2 hours instead of 90 would have helped it much though tbh because the editing is far from the only problem this movie has. Nicholas Cage's character appears to change from one scene to the next after a while, starting off as the more sensible criminal of the trio but eventually lashing off and appears to try to outcrazy Willem Defoe who is the crazy guy in the group.
Why did I say trio you ask, well there's actually a third guy with the same importance as Cage and Defoe and that is the unknown Christopher Matthew Cook, I'm guessing he is good friends with the director or something because he just becomes 'the other guy' when put in to the same position as 2 stars like Cage and Defoe and doesn't have the acting-chops to rise above it.
Cook's character is said by Cage's character to be incredibly intelligent talking about how if he lived in another universe he would have been a Harvard student, but there's nothing that Cook's character says or does in the film that suggest that he is particularly smart.
Paul Schrader and Willem Dafoe: 'We thought we should really do the nasty'
There's a lot of random stuff like that that doesn't go anywhere and a lot of random stuff that doesn't come from anywhere, like the last 5 minutes, very random. Anyways all in all it just becomes a pointless and confusing Tarantino wanna be of a film.
