Long owned by Georgia-Pacific Corp. Dennis said outside developers have asked about the property but city officials resisted for years, wanting to make it part of the large system of natural habitat and waterfront park holdings around Lacamas Lake and Round Lake. Dennis hopes the deal will be finalized by summer or fall. Once that happens, the park will be opened so folks can use it for picnics and hiking. So far, Dennis said, the city has been actively working to buy the property for at least two years.

And yes, she had a two-way radio, but really, if something goes wrong do you think you can reach that in time? So yeah, I was already thinking this wasn't a good idea when I read about it.

But then things start going wrong, a strange man is on her property. Paintings start to happen. Strange things happen at night. But what does our girl do? Just stay there and swing an axe around. Even when she finds out about the murders she just stays. OK, at that point she probably was already screwed, maybe even from the moment the strange man saw her. I would have just called someone on the two-way radio, or the walkie talkie she later gets, and just get the hell out of here. That would have been my plan. I also wouldn't have let the walkie talkie out of my sight.

I would hold it wherever I went. The book was definitely creepy, and it gets creepier with each and every turning page. Especially with the whole blacking out and waking up to a mountain of paintings that depict several gruesome scenes. I have to say for quite a time I thought she had something to do with all these murders. P But then other things started to happen which made me switch to someone else.

The ending was scary, creepy, and I had a bad case of goosebumps.

P I definitely loved the ending though. I already had a suspicion x wasn't bad, and it was confirmed! I am also happy with the ending for another reason, which I can't list as that would be a big spoiler. It has a good MC though at times you just want to shake her around to get her head clear again , a good side character, a great story, and a lovely but creepy ending. Believe me, you won't be able to stop reading when you start this one. Review first posted at https: Right from the opening sentences, a feeling of dread and suspense starts to build and you just know things are going to get scary.

I continued reading later that night in bed, with my husband right next to me, and I was still so creeped out and scared that I had to stop reading until the next day. But no matter how terrifying things got, the author managed to wrap things up in such a way that everything made se "Dead Lake" by Darcy Coates is exactly the type of horror novel I love coming across. But no matter how terrifying things got, the author managed to wrap things up in such a way that everything made sense and ended with a satisfying conclusion.

So often in the horror genre, at the end of a story you're left hanging or wondering what the hell just happened. Not so with this story. All in all, this is a wonderfully spine-tingling read that you should not miss. Jan 18, Jeanine rated it it was amazing Shelves: Darcy Coates is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Dead Lake has interesting characters and a few really creepy ones.

I'm having a hard time rating this book. I don't like being disrespectful of any author's work but I found the story to be mundane. It seemed like the author used descriptive words inappropriately, i. This was just one instance. The writer was using words to fill up the pages. The writer might eventually be an excellent writer but hasn't achieved that status yet. Jun 18, Cikita Oktarina rated it it was ok. Nov 25, Barbara L. My heart is still racing I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I was drawn in immediately.

A few minor misspelled words, but not a distraction. If you like mysteries with a bit of paranormal added, don't pass this one by. Solid Concept Very easy read! I liked the concept but there are multiple holes in the storyline. It had the potentiAl to be an excellent book, but the story felt rushed and unfinished.

Jul 14, Debbie rated it liked it. I debated hard about giving this book 2 or 3 stars. On one hand the protagonist made me want to bash my own head in. It was insanely frustrating. But the story was shockingly short so there's that. This is my second Darcy Coates book and I don't know if it's her thing but she's really good at building an atmosphere and background. Her descriptions are fantastic. BUT the story is over quickly. It's not a short story but it' I debated hard about giving this book 2 or 3 stars. It's not a short story but it's not a full length novel either.

There was a very M. Night Shyamalan-y twist at the end. I certainly didn't see it coming but even that was like WTF. So what I'm saying is I don't fully know how to feel about this book. Oct 25, Beth rated it it was amazing. Oct 13, Eve rated it really liked it. Dead Lake was just like that. Supernatural theme didn't bother me but was interesting and nicely done. Loved creepy feeling but it was not too creepy. The story was well written and the characters surprisingly well developed for such a short story.

I like this author's expressive description of the scenes, so you feel that you are either on the spot there or watching a movie. Definitely plan to look out for more by this author. I love the mountains.

I love remote places where I am not bombarded with noise and people. I would have still left. Sam goes to her uncle's cabin to get away from things and paint for a showing that is a week or so away. Her mother passed several months back and she has been in a rut, which for anyone who has had lost her mother you know that this is devastating. Sam sees a man at the end of her dock bending over looking into the water, but when she goes out to tell him to leave he is gone. Now the fun begins. Jun 12, Reem rated it really liked it.

Jun 05, Janette rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this book. It had some interesting twists and was a quick read that was hard to put down for very long. I do agree with one negative reviewer's comment that the heroine does do some incredibly stupid things that no rational--or even moderately intelligent--person would ever do.

Camas looking to buy Georgia-Pacific property to rename and open as park

But then I remember the existence of the "Darwin Awards" and the fact that there are some truly stupid people in the world who probably would make such dumb choices. So while "Sam's" stupidity was annoyin I really enjoyed this book.

See a Problem?

So while "Sam's" stupidity was annoying and made me want to slap some sense into her, it certainly wasn't anything that ever made me want to stop reading. In a nutshell, Sam goes to her uncle's cabin for a week to paint and prepare for her first art exhibition, but is distracted by strange happenings and a history of mysterious disappearances near the lake. I don't want to expand on the story any more than that or I'll probably ruin it for someone else, so I'll just say that it had me on the edge of my seat and, as such, I very highly recommend.

Jul 26, David Francis Francis rated it it was amazing. Darcy is a good storyteller. But she needs to do more research. In Dead Lake she has main character get leeches on her legs from brush. Leeches need to be in water. Her uncle's house has the bathtub upstairs, no running hot water, and the fireplace--only heat--downstairs.

Makes me think Darcy has never been in a rustic cabin. Who in their right mind would design a cabin so they have to carry hot water upstairs? Later her character gets water "in" her lungs. If a person actually gets water in the Darcy is a good storyteller. If a person actually gets water in their lungs they go unconscious. And if revived they can drown later on land because of the water in the lungs. I find these kind of glaring errors distracting. There are a few more but you get the idea.

I think Darcy would have a lot more 5 star reviews if she did her homework.

But this is an enjoyable tale. Aug 16, Keith Blodgett rated it it was ok. Very few scares very little spookiness the writing wasn't as good as the other stories I've read by this author. While I know it's a small thing it's bits like an author telling how her character is climbing a rocky, vine covered, trail and had to stop several times to remove leeches from her legs. Leeches live in water not on mountains. It's things like that which can tear you right out of the story saying "what the heck is she talking about?!

Leeches just shows a Very few scares very little spookiness the writing wasn't as good as the other stories I've read by this author. Leeches just shows a lack of rese or knowledge. The ending had a bit of a twist and was better than the full first half of the book. I've read better but at least I was able to finish this. As a time killer it's not bad. As a horror story it falls short. • I found the main character to be less than mediocre and I badly wanted to finish the story just to be done with it. Couldn't put it down I read this in a few hours all in one night, literally unable to turn off my kindle and go to sleep. I just discovered Darcy Coates and I'm glad I did. I don't scare easily but the way the tension built up in this story I found myself jumping at any little house sounds and nervous at having to get up out of bed.

She was frightened but also needed to find answers, she did brave thing Couldn't put it down I read this in a few hours all in one night, literally unable to turn off my kindle and go to sleep. She was frightened but also needed to find answers, she did brave things but not so bold that it was unbelievable. All in all, great read. The talent of the creepy, scary, mysterious world of horror just exudes from this writer's mind!

This is no different. A creepy cabin in the woods, a creepier man stalking her, murderous paintings by her hand with no memory of doing most of them. Not Coates' strongest work, but she gives a nice twist in the end. Extra points for keeping the story only as long as it needed to be. Many authors will pump a novella into a longer tale for market purposes.

    As always, I enjoyed it.

She's really a great horror writer. May 28, Jake rated it liked it. Dead Lake has a simple enough premise, yet still manages to become scary and thrilling. At first the terror just starts out gradually. Sam notices little things being out of place and sees brief glimpses of unsettling things. From there, it ramps up to Sam being outright pursued and hunted through the woods and around the lake.

The story on the whole is pretty straightforward and is good for a casual immediate scare sort of read. This is to be expected since it is a novella, but it ends with eve Dead Lake has a simple enough premise, yet still manages to become scary and thrilling. This is to be expected since it is a novella, but it ends with everything wrapped up nicely and a satisfying conclusion. Sam is a decent enough main character to get behind.

Despite this, Sam is more than enjoyable to read about during the straight terror parts of the book.
