Science fiction characters

With the merger of two worlds, the New York City skyline is gone along with electricity and other modern conveniences. In its place is magic. The queen of Kardenia is able to wield it and bestow upon her subjects the gift of indifference. Nobody cares about their loved ones or has the ability to have feelings save for the occasional twinge of fear to keep them on their toes. Jade was only six when the world shattered and remembers nothing about her former life.

She's the only female in the queen's guard and a skilled fighter. She's okay with the ice in her heart; it's been there as long as she can remember. When the queen's son Asher resurfaces after being AWOL since the earthquake, the queen involves Jade in a plot to gain his trust and bring him back. Jade allows Asher and the rebels to capture her and bring her to their base.

In gaining Asher's trust, however, she finds her frozen heart thawing and realizes that, away from the queen's influence, she is able to have emotions again. Can Jade really embrace her past in favor of her newfound comrades when the queen still has an icy grip on her heart, or will she betray her new friends in order to finally be free? At only ebook pages, I wished it was longer because I wasn't ready to say goodbye to the characters, but the length will feel perfect to many readers who feel bogged down by longer page counts.

The romance was handled well, and had a lovely quality to it that will appeal to both younger and older readers, a line that's very hard to draw and walk along in YA. It's also more of a slow-build than it is insta-love, which I always appreciate, and it still had a fairy tale quality to it. I also really liked the way Jade grew as she learned to have her own thoughts and emotions. I wasn't anticipating the direction the novel took, either, and it kept me turning pages to figure out how the final climax would shake out. I really like the way the modern era merges with a more archaic one, and am excited to see that this has happened in more places around the world than just NYC Sorry to all the characters facing crazy, evil monarchs, but!!!!!

Gathering Frost Book Review I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. After a death defying earth quake hits New York, Jade and her Mum flee New York after the Post Apocalyptic event's only to find a great town that has risen from the ground that is filled with maidens in pretty dress's and a beautiful princess with a great big inviting smile planted on her face. Jade believe's that her very dream has come true Gathering Frost Book Review I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Jade believe's that her very dream has come true, That there is a fair princess here to save them. But she was wrong, very wrong. At the age of 6 she believed that the princess was walking over to save her but really she chilled and thawed jade's heart leaving her emotionless not having a care in the world. She didn't even care about her mother who was wailing and whimpering for her to come back.

The princess chilled her heart, but she was no princess she was the Queen of Kardenia Living in the medieval way's where magic surrounds everyone but not in a good way. The people in the town are the queens pawns to play with. More than a decade of darkness. She has the faintest memories of what it used to be like where pictures moved on screens and food would stay cold or hot at you're will.

But had grown up since then.

Now the only female member of the guard who could take anyone who came at her with a kick and a twist Jade has always been fearless in every way possible, Except when it comes to the queen. After jade takes a visit into the unused City of Post apocalyptic New York someone pull's a gun to her head and she immediately know's how he is this man that just pulled a gun on her is the Queens runaway son Asher.

She immediately jump's into action prepared to drag him with her but something warm's her heart during her meeting with him he saved her from falling of a building. No one has ever spared her a second thought since the earthquake except him, the evil queens son. Jade let's him go because for the first time in a long time she see's something in him she will never have.

The Queen is immediately on top of Jade after reading her thoughts. I mean after all they are like mindless zombies in a way. She must earn his trust and lure him back to the kingdom of Kardenia so his mother can further educate him on becoming the heir to the throne. But whilst at the rebels camp her heart starts to warm at the idea of people, caring and worrying for her. Jade growns very close to asher and ignore's that fact that she must betray him if she wants her freedom.

But she doesn't see anything wrong with just staying at the rebel camp. Until they decide to wage war on Kardenia. Can she break the Ice queens curse on her heart? I believe that jade stole my heart the moment i met her in chapter one! She's not afraid to put a man in his place and show of her dominance to put others in place. Jade has two sides to herself within the castle she has her emotionless, careless side who will ruthlessly hurt someone who get's in her way. Then there's her secretive side that she keeps locked in her bedroom with coloured paintings and glass jars that put colour and warmth back into her icy soul that she can't cure.

Jade is Strong and once as she has made a decision she will keep at it until the end of her very days. This book is full of jaw dropping events that you will never get over, i for one will always have piece of my heart dedicated to this masterpiece. This book has plenty of twists and turns when you think the book is going to go one way it goes the other way. The Romance was wonderful there was No Love Triangle!!!!! You see this was pure love and happiness with no stupid or unnecessary drama coming from another character who may have liked her!

Their relationship was sweet and cute and i loved that they were open and honest with each other about most things. I really loved this book it was written perfectly and the character were all very acceptable with their attitude and even thought they had their difference's they made up for them. The only thing that frustrated me was at the end. Towards the end of the novel i felt like it was unlike Jade and Asher the way they were talking to each other as if nothing had ever happened.

I feel that that slightly ruined it for me and that was one reason that i gave this book 4. So really this book has everything Romance, Thrill, Betrayal, Magic, fairytale feel and of course an awesome protagonist!! This will defiantly find a place on my favourites shelf and I'm awaiting to get my hands on the second book!!

Gathering Frost is part fantasy and part dystopian with a heart-warming yes, pun intended romance. The blurb calls it a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but it seems more of a mash of several different fairy tales. I liked the way the story began, with the earthquake in New York and the emergence of the ice queen's realm. Little Jade was angry at herself for crying-- little did she know the queen would rob her of emotions. Jade was a great character.

Even emotionless, there was just something special about her. She was the only female in the queen's guard, and the queen herself took a special interest in her. Jade knew she was the bad guy, but due to her emotionless state, she didn't really care. And yet, that never quite seemed true. I appreciated Jade's strength both physically and mentally Prince Asher was a joy-- witty and charming, warm and caring. It was hard to believe he was really the queen's son.

The interactions between Jade and Asher were by far the best part of the story. I found the world created by Ms. Davis intriguing and quite imaginative as well. Just because the story is based on a fairy tale, don't assume you know what's going to happen. Lots of twists and turns kept the story interesting. I admit, I love fairy tale retellings, and Gathering Frost was quite enjoyable. Sorry I just had too much fun with these ice puns. Like I had so much fun with this book. To be completely honest, I have no clue what La Femme Nikita is and my only experience with Once Upon A Time is getting mad at the main character because she was so damn stupid until the end of the first season.

This is supposed to be a Sleeping Beauty retelling, and there are certainly many aspects of the story. But the world in the book is truly its own. Talk about the best of both worlds, am I right? I think the author did a great job on getting the populous's reaction with a queen suddenly ruling the city. With the queen's magic at her disposal, technology isn't something people can use. We're thrown back into the world where castles rise and people's emotions are stripped away. Once they were safe to walk on, to ride on. Once they were smooth. A heart of ice and no feeling. I killed him, just after Asher was born.

The man was weak, so easily controlled, so predictable. All the time, trying to save me from myself. This in part is due to the aid of Asher, the prince and also a rebel against the queen. He's such a sweetheart and their romance was so enjoyable to read. No lame manipulation other than the deception Jade has to do mentioned in the blurb or lying or love triangles. Jade's transition from some cold, unfeeling warrior into a girl that gets angry, sad, and happy is realistically written.

It was really well-done, and Jade coming to terms with her actual self buried under the layers of magic was something great to read. I am a rock. I am not the storm that rages and spits fire into the sky. It makes sense, since this book had a nice closure that left me thoroughly satisfied. I came for the fairy tale retelling, I stayed for the awesome world, superb romance and endearing characters. The Series is called Once Upon a Curse, and each of the books are loosely based on fairy tale re-tellings.

But let me tell you that if the rest of the books are anything like the first one, these are fairy tales that are twisted and turned in ways that you will not see coming. Gathering Frost is a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty, but there is no sleeping beauty in this tale.

See a Problem?

It is a waking curse placed on the heroine, who in the very first chapter claims that she is actually the bad guy? Sounds different than your average take, doesn't it? Jade is an interesting girl. I loved seeing the bland, emotionless shell that she was at the start of the book because it makes you appreciate the moments where the real Jade starts to peek through. I really liked watching her progress throughout the story, even if she doubted herself at times.

And Asher, well Asher is just a sweetie-pie. There is no getting around that. That boy can thaw anyone's heart out. Gathering Frost is an exciting tale that has a ton of twists and turns throughout. Just when you think the story is going in one way, the author veers and shoot you off in another direction. More than once I thought I had the ending figured out, just to completely doubt myself when a crazy twist is thrown my way.

I finally gave up trying to guess what was going to happen and just enjoyed the crazy ride that Kaitlyn Davis was taking me on. Gathering Frost was a completely fun filled read. I love the fairy tale fantasy genre and Kaitlyn Davis does a wonderful job. The ending is nuts. I didn't see it coming at all, and I kind of wish we got a little more. It felt a little incomplete. Maybe it will be picked up in the next book, but I am not sure because the next book is going to be a re-telling of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast.

Whether this story is continued or not, I know that I am excited to read more from Kaitlyn Davis. Gathering Frost is a great read for fans of ya fantasy and fairy tale re-tellings. This review was originally posted on Book Briefs I loved this book. To me is it a very loose reimagined world of Sleeping Beauty, but that is a good thing. It kept me guessing and really kept me on the edge of my seat. I stayed up late reading as I just had to know what happens next. I loved the unique idea that Kaitlyn came up with to make this story very unique.

I really felt I connected with the main characters, and just loved Asher. Jade is a kick ass female that I really loved. Love the strong female characters. I do not want I loved this book. I do not want to give anything away, and the blurb gives you just enough to get your interest I am not one to rewrite a blurb in my review, you can read that for yourself I love Kaitlyn Davis' other books and was not surprised that I loved this one too.

I look forward to the rest of the series.

Gathering Frost

I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes paranormal books, as well as any fairy tale retellings, that are unique too. I think it was brilliant on how it ends to open up for the next book which is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Here is a sweet quote for you: We were meant to save each other. And then his lips are on mine and I can't think any longer. Fire burns them all away. Flames that spark at my mouth then grow as they travel down into my chest, along my arms, to the very tips of my toes. Asher pushes me back until I hit the wall, and then he presses further, until every inch of us touches, burns.

His leg comes between mine as my hands clasp behind his neck, urging him closer. Hands grip my waist, just skimming my bare skin, pulling me toward him. Time stops as we seem to fly, to soar together. I forget the cell, the room, the rebel camp. I forget that we are underground, because behind my closed eyes all I see are stars. The ones that spark in his irises, the ones that I've stared at for years on the wall.

Stars and open skies and freedom. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I was lucky enough to get a copy from the author for me to review. I am so glad I was able to read this early. An excellent YA read, Gathering Frost was definitely enjoyable. With strong characters, trilling action, and sweet romance, this book was great and I really liked it. Jade was a lovely heroine. She had proved herself strong and courageous in the queen's guard but, outside of the queen's icy influence, she showed herself to also be compassionate and loyal.

I really liked her. Asher was great as well. Brave and determined to protect everyone he could from his mother's influence, he was definitely a An excellent YA read, Gathering Frost was definitely enjoyable. Brave and determined to protect everyone he could from his mother's influence, he was definitely a match for Jade in strength. And, he was really sweet and caring with everyone though especially Jade.

I thought he was adorable. The romance was lovely. Jade and Asher were so great together. I was rooting for them the whole time. My only issue with the book was that I was left with some questions in regards to the world-building in general. Like, if the queen's influence could only spread so far, then why was it said that the entire world was affected by it?

Wouldn't only the area of influence be affected and the rest of the world went on as normal? In that case, why didn't the rest of the world help get rid of the witch? Also, the magic of the queen began with a curse, but who cursed the bloodline and why? Little things like that nagged at me and brought the book down a little. But, I still enjoyed it overall. The plot moved quickly and kept me hooked all the way through. I really liked the story, from the action to the romance, and the ending was perfect. Gathering Frost was a great YA read and I really liked it.

YA lovers, this is definitely a book worth checking out. I enjoyed reading this book alot. The summary was what caught my attention and it had and interesting premise so I thought to read it. I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I started reading it but I can say I was way too surprised at all the turn of events from the start. I admit I had a hard time getting into the book, but it started to pick up after Asher entered the picture. To me it seemed like Jade was missing something, she wasn't interesting or anything. She was sort of a blan I enjoyed reading this book alot.

She was sort of a bland character. The only times I liked in the book all had Asher in them. And I hate to admit this, but I may have skipped a few pages just to get to good parts about Asher and her together. Now, don't get me wrong, it was a nice story but it seemed a little bit to me, like it wasn't finished.

It seemed more like a well draft, it was something that spark that would have made it into something better. Of course, it could have just been Jade as a character that had me in a slump. Either way, I was glad that she got back to feelings emotions again, because the ending chapters were awesome to read about. The action and romance parts in there were well written and I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see how things go with Jade and Asher. Hopefully Omorose has a guy that she likes and won't come between Jade and Asher after they rescue her.

I picked up this book because the story was unique and intriguing- and because I thought it was a continuing series because I mostly read series , but it wasn't- everything that happens in this book gets more or less resolved in this book, this is the first fantasy book I'm content to call a stand-alone novel. I loved the whole idea of new york and Kanedria I think that was the name?

While Flat is a prodigy, he lacks the intelligence to properly utilize his talents, and though El-Melloi's teaching prowess allowed him to advance more than any other, he was still unable to graduate.

This left El-Melloi with mixed feelings in not letting him go even though he normally hates to let unprepared students out into the world. He attempts to have Flat understand the true nature of the war, moving past his anger and reaching a form of ascetic enlightenment. He attempts to reason that Flat is unsuited to the battle, but his words do nothing to daunt him.

He is unable to use logic with Flat and eventually outright denies him, though Flat's idea of befriending the other Servants reminds him of Rider. He begins to think of lending the fragment of Rider's cloak should Flat return again, but Flat's mistake with the Jack the Ripper toy knife, not remembering it or checking it to see its significance, causes him to think that Flat has given up on participating.

This causes him to make the choice of giving it to him and reinforcing his misunderstanding. He returns to his room, reminisces over Rider's cloak, and then believes the situation with Flat to be settled. Lord El-Melloi II continues his class. Gray takes him to the infirmary. He is noted to have been distraught in dealing with their violent arguing until Kischur intervened. They praise their efforts in collecting the cards and the stability of Fuyuki's leylines. However they ordered Rin and Luvia to stay in Fuyuki for one year and learn common sense as Japan values cooperation and harmony.

They declared that both girls need to amend their personalities in order to be Zelretch student. Waver's character has been gender swapped to a female and the heroine of the story. Waver plays the role of Sensha Otoko's love interest. Sensha Otoko presented a Saber figure to Waver, a gift which Waver was conflicted because Iskandar said he loves the figure.

Waver assumed Iskandar was talking about the Saber figure until Iskandar corrected her saying he loves the motorbike and the Saber figure was the decoration. She is seen later overprotective about the figure when Diarmuid was insulting Iskandar lack of gift knowledge. The discussion came to an end when Waver dived to save the figure. She later sent a message to Iskandar about her appreciation with the present and how she is interested in learning more about motorcycle from Iskandar.

Waver's poor lineage gave him a circuit count and crest quality of the lowest standard. He lacks the prerequisites to actually practice magecraft, and he cannot even provide the cost of Rider's Ionioi Hetairoi , causing Rider to bear the cost himself to keep from draining and killing his Master. He is capable of hypnotic suggestion to a certain degree. It allows him to make Glen and Martha MacKenzie believe him to be their grandson for a long duration of time, but it is lacking in that it fails to affect Glen for the entirety of Waver's stay.

He believes he has completely failed in what should be the most basic art among basic arts and has no excuse even if it was by luck or accident that he broke free from it. Even at nineteen, Waver possesses the power of observation and insight that give him remarkable talent as a researcher. His inborn talents instead take another form later in life. However Luviagelita Edelfelt and Kayneth said that by understanding magecraft, all he is doing is destroying it. For example, he only witnessed Luvia's Gandr once and he easily deciphered Edelfelt magecraft.

His true talent is realized as a lecturer due to being the best person at detecting the hidden talent of others and training it, described as the "unusual talent of could not put magecraft to practice, but ingenious in the reinterpretation of theories and classification of systems. All of his graduates have achieved the rank of Pride or greater within a decade, without exception. And, he doesn't even crush his pupils like Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg does.

Waver can do basic alchemy using tools brought from London, including twenty-four vials for ores and reagents, a spirit lamp mortar, and droppers. Using a basic practice of mixing complementary reagents into river water from the Mion river , he can detect residual magical energy, and doing so on various samples collected from parts of the river can be used to trace a target. Water with latent magecraft turns a rust red color, water with strong traces turns a murky black, and normal water is unaffected.

This allows him to pinpoint the lair of Caster using the specifically labeled samples and a map to find where the traces are strongest and when normal water ends. Rider praises him for obtaining great results from a poor method over a better method, but Waver perceives it as an insult. In the Adra Castle case, he was investigating upon the death of Hishiri Adashino. He take out a vial of some sort of liquid from his jacket.

With one drop of that liquid, the colour of the bloodstain changed dramatically. By analysing the concentration of magical energy remaining in the bloodstains, he can determine when Hishiri died. Orlocke commented that rather than science, his method was more like Medieval era Alchemy or a form of Witchcraft. Orlocke believes his methods are too direct, and it's getting farther away from the Mystery.

Lord El-Melloi II replied that he tried numerous methods, but this is the best method for him. While it normally does chores, it seems there is a troublesome bug that causes it to run out of control while insisting that it is a killer robot from the future. This may be because of a harmful movie it was shown during its developmental stages. Waver was to receive more scenes to flesh out his growth, but it was felt that it would have made the identity of the main character too confusing if he was given too much focus.

While attacking Caster's lair, they would have found a small girl Assassin , who Waver would believe to be one of Caster's victims after she had her memories and the awareness of being Assassin hidden away. Rider, knowing of her identity, would have kept quiet to honor Waver's chivalry. As another addition to the Mackenzie household, their interactions would have served to lighten the story at the time, but after the confrontation with the Assassins at the Einzbern Castle, she would have regained her memories as Hassan.

Through a dramatic farewell tragedy, Waver would climb another step on the path to becoming an adult. He really wanted to draw him, and feels the design that makes him look incompetent was for the best. Atsuhi Ikariya was in charge of the character design for the anime version. Takeuchi said the epilogue where a young man lost his childish leader has brought him to tears. He was originally designed to be just another loser character but watching him develop and grow is very moving. He was amazed the way he was drawn in the anime, the look of a "heroine" written all over it.

Gen Urobuchi wants to write about character like him at some point, and feels that he is the character with the most vivid expressions. But in the end, that worry was for nothing. The character that came out on the other end of ten years had grown splendidly, crowned with the title of Lord, and a completely different man from the boy I had written. The gentleman who had polished his powers of analysis, bearing a cunning like an old man's wisdom, while still hiding the distortion of his youth somewhere in his heart was truly an enchanting character! Kinoko Nasu said that Waver is a teenaged boy mixed in with the other protagonists and there was not much time for a lot of beautiful young ladies.

He thinks they did a good job of portraying a youth who is slowly growing into a man. Sayaka Ohara Voice Actress of Irisviel said she really liked and thought it was cute when Rider Iskandar hit Waver so hard with a finger flick that the boy went flying. She thought the pairing with Iskandar and Waver was great because of the contrast between violence and emotion, watching them carry on was a lot of fun for her.

It must be because I wanted to draw him a lot. Perhaps because he's the character with the most vivid expressions. I too want to write about a character like this one sooner or later. He has a design that makes him look incompetent, but it probably turn out for the best.

At the epilogue, I was really in tears. The part about the young man who lost his childish leader. Maybe if Suneo parted with Jaian, he too would have become an honorable, mature man!? He was the youngest lecturer to grace the podium of the Department of Evocation in its history. His skills were not only in research, but also politics. Due to his great lineage, he had extensive connections. He was expected to form the greatest faction in the Clock Tower. He did not participate in the Holy Grail War due to necessity or duress, it was merely to add a splash of "martial prowess" to his life's story.

Although he did not severely underestimate the Three Founding Houses, he did boast that Lord El-Melloi could overwhelm them by skills alone. The reason Kayneth brought many dangerous Mystic Code had nothing to do with research, but for entertainment value. Kayneth had talents not only in Spirit Evocation, but also in many fields of magecraft.
