ZERU ZERU - Updated Room Prices & B&B Reviews (Michamvi, Zanzibar Island) - TripAdvisor

Staff were kind and helpful. We liked it so much we booked to come back again next week! Also the compound is great with a pool to enjoy yourself. I would definitely come again and recommend this nice place on the east coast! The food is great as well. The beaches around are amazing. Giacomo and Abuu were so accommodating and always helpful.

Coco and Edo have organised amazing trips all around Zanzibar from going to see the dolphins to Stonetown and Safari Blue. Thank you to the lovely ladies who cooked our meals, the food was delicious and they were always going an extra mile to please our fussy 4 yrs old. The room was clean. We had one time dinner there and it was amazing, really good seafood. Breakfast was also good and enough. We planned to stay there one night more because we love the place. Thabksnks for everything Jack and all the staff. Very kind and nice people. The perfect place to stay traveling as a backpacker.

Great surroundings and above all friendly people everywhere we went! A big thumb up to all of the staff! One Love and Irie blessings! Peaceful, friendly place to stay. Jack is a very nice guy and always helpful with everything you need.

Jack and his staff are very friendly and always helpful! Take enough cash with you, as the nearest ATM is in Paje. Jack, the manager makes the place feel like home. Had such a fantastic time there and would definitely recommend it.

  • Breakfast to go like a lunch box or anything wasn't offered the day before although we payd for breakfast in advance but we also didn't ask for. Maybe the owner would arrange it after asking. A bit noisy sometimes but no biggie. The vibe was everything. The chill and warm vibe. Would definitely stay there again! Nice place to stay really. We loved staying at Zeru Zeru, peaceful, gorgeous place, great staff. Giacomo is a very friendly and helpful guy. We had there the best part of our trip. Nothing really did disappoint us, it was just what we were searching for!

The serenity and the quietness, also the staff was very friendly and helpful all along the way! We thought we could save some money by cooking our own food, but turned out they charged 3 USD per day for gas! They didn't tell us about that until after we has bought food for cooking. We only used it 1 time, but they wanted to charge us for 3 days. We ended up with a long discussion, and at the end we didn't have to pay.

The restaurant have no menu, and very few choices. They advertise with housekeeping every day, only came 1 time for our 4 night stay. The manager is from Italy, and he's English is not good, and he doesn't speak Swahili, so communication is a problem. Doesn't help that he smokes marijuana all day either. The pool looks dirty. I won't stay here again, there are so many better options for the same price closer to the beach. Free bikes that you can use as you want. Friendly and helpful staff. Wildlife with monkeys outside.

Not enough shade at the pool. Alberto is very friendly and helpful! I liked the people there, very helpful, always in good mood smiling No luxury but clean and nice. Traveler photo of Michamvi. Had such a fantastic time there and would definitely recommend it Nathalie, Germany. Nice place to stay really Stephanie, Canada. Walter and Rhoda Johan, Netherlands. Met the owner and he invited me over for lunch and some wine tasting.

They have their own winery 30 minutes away, very tasty wine! Like many other reviewers we stumbled across Zeru by chance when strolling around Split looking for somewhere to dine. The gorgeous smells emanating from the interior stopped us in our tracks as we were walking past, and when we saw the unusual menu we knew Had read the reviews but found by accident. Tried the wines and had a fantastic evening meal. They are new and wasn't busy when we were there so got great attention from waiter. Food was interesting and beautifully cooked. Wine wad also good and I We traveled to Croatia for 5 days and we stumbled upon this gem the second day we were there.

We just had drinks and we met Ljubo. Who was attentive and very knowledgeable about the wines. Stumbled upon this little gem on our 2nd day here in Split. We ended up coming here 3x because the atmosphere was so inviting and the service was excellent. After much frustration for the source we found Matt. Stopped off for a late light lunch of a slice if quiche and a glass of wine So good, and relaxed that we decided to order a bottle of wine they make, and to extend it to dinner!

Service was attentive but relaxed, tap water A friend and I came to have a nice glass of wine and we were not disappointed. The Kairos Crljenak was amazing! My absolutely favorite red wine ever! This place is amazing for a chilled meal around wine. Their wine is sourced from local producer and it is delicious. They have little choice on menu, because they prime quality. Dec 15, Evelina AvalinahsBooks rated it it was amazing Shelves: Zeru by Phillip Vargas was amazing. I have had this copy since the dawn of time — basically, one of my first free review copies on some platform I don't even remember, way before I started blogging. I didn't know this book would move me so much! So when I read it in April, I decided to hold the review until I can post it, maybe together with the reviews for Kindred or Homegoing.

But then, I realized Kindred's subject matter is too different — merely it being about Africans is not enough, Zeru by Phillip Vargas was amazing. But then, I realized Kindred's subject matter is too different — merely it being about Africans is not enough, the topics are too far apart.

And I'm still reading Homegoing, because I just can't read that book without weeping. So this book was left all alone, and a half a year later, I realized I was doing it a big disservice, not reviewing it outright. So here we are. Zeru is a short book, but it talks about a very important, serious and sad phenomenon in Africa — the hunting and killing of Black albino people for their organs although perhaps the better term would be Black person with albinism, I apologize if I've used it in an offensive way, please tell me in the comments , supposedly for their hidden power that the hunter will gain after they consume something of the Zeru — the local name of a Black person with albinism.

It is still a big problem in some places at least, so the book says , and it's truly tragic that these children, already endangered by the sun and the elements because of their sensitivity to light and UV rays, also have to hide from brutal murderers. So at this point, you can probably see why this story gripped me so much. It's about a child, and a capable child at that, who lives in the junk yards because of the Zeru hunters who have killed his family. It's a story of prevailing, although you're the underdog, and also a story of an unexpected friendship — which I won't spoil for you by telling you more about what it was.

Please read this book! It's short, but it has important things to say, and the writing is truly great. I am not sure Phillip Vargas has written anything else that's accessible, at least, judging by Goodreads, but I would love to read more books by this author. It was a journey for sure. As stated before, I got this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion. Mar 06, Shadowshock rated it really liked it. The descriptions of the garbage piles were well done without being too heavy.

The way it comes about tells the reader that this is a very important fact — and the why comes soon very after that. The violence in the book came quick and strong. The witch doctor was the most uncomfortable part for me, he had no hesitation for what he was doing. There is plenty of dirty language used throughout the book, more towards the end of the book when Abasi is around other people.

I prefer not to have to deal with any type of language in my books that I intend to enjoy but given the setting goal? I do remember reading about baboons being extremely territorial and dangerous. A short but impacting read. None of that was there, just a short story of what real life is for real people. I really appreciate the author for tackling such a difficult, violent and dark issue and creating a story that touched on it, held the grimness of such a reality without plunging headlong into it.

Dec 10, Rishika S. Philip Vargas may not be the world's best wordsmith, but he knows how to tell a story in his own, unique style that is engaging to say the least. Zeru is a fast paced, never slowing down read that keeps you at the edge of you seat at all times. This isn't so much because you want to know what happens next; but more because you want to know what happens next to Abasi.

Vargas created a character so real that association with Abasi becomes a matter of when and not if. While the book starts off at a Philip Vargas may not be the world's best wordsmith, but he knows how to tell a story in his own, unique style that is engaging to say the least. While the book starts off at a slow-ish pace, it picks up within a few pages and then doesn't let up. That only adds to the fact that it is a short book anyway, allowing you to complete it in a matter of hours.

There are two things that make Zeru really good. The first is the relation with reality. As the author's note at the end of the story says, the basis of the story is very real, where albinos in East Africa are almost hunted. They are perceived not as individuals but as a means to luck and money for others and only death for the Zeru themselves.

Vargas' writing does not lose touch with that reality. Even before you reach the author's note, you are ready to believe everything that is happening, somewhere aware that this is a very real story that can happen or that may even be happening as you read.

    Zeru, Split

The second is Abasi himself. Vargas created a character who was so human, so real, that you can't help but associate with him.

This story isn't about one young boy's heroic deeds. This story is about the real emotions of twelve year old who's all alone and plagued by fear. It isn't about a boy who comes through like a hero in impossible situations; it's about a buy who deals with what he has to in a way that any normal twelve year old would. He has weaknesses, he has strengths, and he reacts to them in a real, human manner which makes you feel for him more and share in all that he feels.

There are other things that work to make this story a really good read such as Vargas' descriptive narration which paint entire pictures, action and violence that can be a little difficult to digest for some but add to the intensity of the story, characters other than Abasi that are painted in a very real light, and the many twists and turns that are unexpected but do not disappoint.

Its short length and quick moving story make Zeru a great read for when you are travelling, spending a weeknight in, or simply want to read something interesting. It has violent aspects that can be a little gruesome for some readers, but, in my opinion, adds to the sense of reality and urgency. While, at first glance, it may seem like Zeru was written for a young adult audience, that is definitely not the case. Zeru caters to a mature audience and can be appreciated for its touch with reality, great character development, catchy story line, and a writing style that suits the genre.

I would definitely read more from the author and more on Abasi. I would recommend Zeru to readers who are more focused on a good story rather than a particular genre. All in all, a really good read! Oct 27, Charles Ray rated it it was amazing. Abasi lives in the Rustlands, an area of Takataka Dumps, one of the largest landfills in Tanzania. He lives alone in a part of the dump avoided by others who inhabit The Filth, that area of the dump with newer trash, but more danger.
