Many people were still in the dark, and no one felt much like celebrating. Still there were moments of lightness. A Cantar con la gran Karirmalice Ronda!!! Feliz Navidad a Todos!!!!! Posted by Jorge Bracero on Monday, December 25, Bracero continued with his daily updates about which lines were being fixed and where the brigades were headed next. To keep up a sense of momentum and share some hope, he also shared videos as new places got power.

Bracero began asking people to record videos of their lights coming back on, and every week a new town celebrated. Finally, in August of PREPA announced that the entire island had been reconnected to the grid, just six weeks before the one-year anniversary of Maria — and just in time for the next hurricane season.

Among other things, there has been a lack of steady leadership over the last year — five different directors have cycled through the position at the helm. As a result, Puerto Ricans missed out on opportunities to improve their infrastructure.

Puerto Ricans were traumatized by Maria — by the destruction and the loss of life, of course, but also by the realization that the security they felt before the storm was an illusion, and that no one could help them fast enough. The depth of this wound is just very, very deep.

PREPA is in the process of privatizing, and being sold off, piece by piece, in hopes that a private company or various private companies will be able to deliver better service than the government has. A lot of people are skeptical that privatization will have this desired effect. With a spotty signal it would take a few hours sometimes to download newly released episodes, but once they did it was the highlight of my night.

Thank you for producing this episode. Katie, it was exactly a year ago —on Halloween evening— that we got our power back at home. Thanks for a great episode. Great story, it reminded me a lot of the Breaking Bad News episode from a few months ago. I think a lot of professions and organizations take for granted the human side in tough situations, even if it is with the good intention of spending the time elsewhere fixing more problems. I'm 59 years old. And I'm invisible

I look at pictures of Younger Me in nineteen eighty-something and see a pretty young woman who I recall never believed she was pretty. Bridget Jones spent her time relaxing in her pyjamas REX. But to keep trying to second-guess such things is pointless and depressing By and large they are right. Waistbands in particular are the enemy of the middle-aged.

I took my eye off my waist for a couple of months when I was 45 and it moved. Knees undergo a similar metamorphosis. I grieve for the smooth knees of my youth: God, I miss shorts and by that I mean proper shorts, not the mid-length variety that are usually teamed with a sun visor and a bum bag.

Living my life energetically via the mediums of dancing , riding and childrearing has rendered my knees unsuitable for polite company. Dancing and riding both employ knees in major ways and, inconveniently, in different directions: Thanks in no small part to this I now have only semi-functional knees, and semi-functional knees are, I suspect, largely responsible for my falling off a kerb in Kensington High Street, in broad daylight, without having touched anything stronger than a chai latte.

Falling off a kerb at 51 — the shame!

Fortunately, internal knee wear is invisible to the casual observer unless unintentionally revealed by slow and awkward rising from the kneeling or seated position gripping tightly to any conveniently located weight-bearing structure but one of the most significant ageing benchmarks, the wrinkled knee, is not. Are any of us prepared for the shock of the wrinkled knee? I know the Younger Me was not. With black opaque tights the on-the-knee dress is again an option during autumn and winter, and possibly a little bit of spring. Not that it matters too much for we invisible women because it seems no one wants to take our photographs anyway, least of all us.

These days deciding what to wear is a right old faff but often a great deal easier than actually putting the stuff on; just try putting on socks or tights when you have sciatica , or fastening a bra when you have a frozen shoulder.
