When Jay first turned his eye to Haley, she was putty in his slender, graceful hands. No one ever treated her like she was important, and on the arm of Jay Cutler, she became someone people listened to and admired. When Haley loses Jay, she not only loses her husband, she loses her identity. Feeling freedom just within her grasp, Haley learns that her settlement payments must go through one of Jay's financial advisors, Hamilton Lowe.

Haley believes he's nothing more than a spy.

And the feelings of distrust are mutual. Yet somehow, Hamilton finds himself handing over the monthly checks in person, and Haley can't deny that there's a kind of tenderness and protectiveness in Hamilton that she's never experienced in a man before. But before Haley can even consider another relationship, she must learn to accept her inherent worth, and what it is to be loved for who she is, not what's on the outside. About Meet the Author. Order now to secure your copy when our stock arrives. I bought this book a long while back, because I loved Ms. Billerbeck's Ashley Stockingdale books and the Spa Girls books Unfortunately, the promise of an edgier book isn't fulfilled in any sense of the word. When I read a chick lit novel, knowing there'll probably be a love interest in it somewhere if not more than one! I need to root for her to succeed. Her attitude is smart-aleck, cynical, and snotty. And, yes, she has reason to feel those things, and yes, I understand that--but there's not a GLIMMER of likability in this heroine through the whole first chapter.

Her "running into walls" thing is pathetic rather than wry or self-deprecating; her humor, what there is of it, is caustic and generally nasty to those around her. Yeah, like I care whether this girl succeeds? In Haley's case, not really. She comes across as whiny from the get-go, and she doesn't really change much. Further, I kept wondering why her fuse was so short.

No matter who approaches her with any sympathy, any attempt at meeting her halfway, or the like Plus, she gets a workout leaping to the worst possible conclusions in pretty much every instance--and yet will she stand up for herself, for example, when her "friend" Anna walks away from her in the nail salon without the slightest concern that Haley can't pay the bill? So there's a disconnect here: And only then, it's because things get dropped into her lap--condos, great jobs, and the like.

Secrets of a Trophy Wife

I found myself wondering over and over what the people who became her friends SAW in her--and the love interest? Unless this guy's had a crush on her from way back, which is kind of implied in the great romantic "reveal," I can't see why any self-respecting guy would put up with her or see something in her that he thought would "rescue" him--which he claims she does. In short, this book is far from satisfying. It's whiny, it's cynical, and it's capped off at the end by a disclaimer by the author that of course, divorce should not be considered as the only viable option, yatta, yatta, yatta.

As if she had to make sure we didn't miss that message Worst of all, however, is the last chapter, the one that's really supposed to tie everything together and leave us with a smile. To put it mildly, it doesn't. The last "romantic reveal" begins with Haley doing an incredibly stupid thing, putting both her and the "leading man" at that point in real danger.

She spends a brief amount of time thinking about that as things get progressively worse, but again--emotional depth, this woman doesn't have. I don't feel pain here. I don't feel real terror here, in a situation where she really IS in danger--and NO concern for the man at all. I would have been frantic in her situation; Haley? And frankly, I had a great deal of trouble even visualizing the scene at all. I found it confusing, needlessly long, and repetitive In short--this book could have used another draft, or maybe two.

It's far short of what I expected out of Ms. And just as a side note? She needs to quit offending her Catholic readers with her clear ignorance about elements of our faith. Funny, how she never seems to need any excuse to bash it Or maybe I should say "Not funny"--since those are clearly supposed to be humorous moments, and instead, they're cringeworthy. There are better chick lit books out there that will give you a much better payoff, better characters, and a much better conclusion. One person found this helpful. See all 33 reviews.
