A magic book appears at Polly's door. She discovers that everything she writes will come true. She likes to make lists like her favorite books and names for her new baby brother. While her mom is at the hospital, Polly turns her little sister into a banana, her house "perfectly palatial", and more crazy antics. Then, she's hungry and the book can't make food the right way so she decides she wants everything back to "normal" just in time to find out she has a baby brother.
This book is a good idea, but all over the place.

Author jumps from one thought to the next without true segues while adding in more tidbits to up the excitement. Could be a little confusing for a new reader. One person found this helpful. I'll have to admit at the outset that I am pretty partial to this one. It is written in the same way my daughter talks.
She is a bit younger than the target age for this, which I'd say is around 3rd grade. But it captures the energy of early elementary graders.
Choose a baby books category
As for the book itself, the story is delightful and just kooky enough to hold the attention of its key demographic. Adults will likely find it scattered though. Length on books aimed at early elementary can often be tricky since that is the age that kids' reading levels are most divergent. But this one works for a solid reader who is ready for their first longer books.
Polly Diamond and the Magic Book written by Alice Kuipers and illustrated by Diana Toledano is a children's book written for ages four to eight years. Polly loves words and writing stories and lists. She believes amazing things happen in threes. Her mother is expecting another baby, so her three year old sister, Anna the sparkle princess moved into Polly's room. She's not happy about it. Her father is a contractor and always has a project going in the house. Polly's new magic book allows her to make things happen that she writes. She's imaginative and creative. It is a fun story to read.

I gave it five stars. That did not change my opinion for this review. My 7 year old daughter is in LOVE with this book. She re-read it three times already and is asking when book 2 will come out.
