The children refused to accept this story, so Baum, in and every year thereafter until his death in May , wrote an Oz book, ultimately writing 13 sequels. He wrote, "To please a child is a sweet and a lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward. Until this version, the book had inspired a number of now less well known stage and screen adaptations, including a profitable Broadway musical and three silent films. The film was considered innovative because of its songs, special effects , and revolutionary use of the new Technicolor.
The story has been translated into other languages at least once without permission and adapted into comics several times. Following the lapse of the original copyright, the characters have been adapted and reused in spin-offs, unofficial sequels, and reinterpretations, some of which have been controversial in their treatment of Baum's characters. In the short story, Oppenheimer Beach, Tom creates a character, named Magnus, that is very reliant on technology. Technology reliance and loss of wonder is another common trait throughout the stories. In another short story included in this book, Bagram, Joey, a solider suffering from PTSD, comes back from war and begins filling the role of a father figure to a teen named Jersey and two children.
This story was much easier to grasp due to the fact that it was more relatable. In a lot of the stories written in this book, Tom Paine takes an event that is very foreign to American readers and makes it more tangible and significant. This book will make you ponder the questionable choices the human kind has made. Tom Paine wrote a book full of pessimist views, cliff hangers, and real life situations. This book is a variety of short stories, some that were based on news headlines from the last decade from the fall of Baghdad, to the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the BP oil spill.
With reading this book it provokes you to think more about how this world is going to be for our future and after reading the book it leaves you wanting more. The other stories are something that everyone has gone through in his or her life or has seen others go through it, whether it was a loss of a loved one or seeing a loved one go through PTSD.

Marlinspike, Fukushima Mon, Bagram, Hot War, and It Was Just Swimming all have the similarities of characters who have the role as a protector to the other character within the stories. Personal connection in each of the nine stories in the book seems to be deterring or seamlessly gone. I Was Just Swimming has a hint of hope after they arrived at the hospital hoping that they got there in time to save their lives. Billy shows hope in Black Box hoping that after working so much that things were going to get better.
Hope is within each of the nine stories that Paine wrote because we're all searching for hope for ourselves. With this Paine knows how to make a difference to his readers by giving us stories that we can relate to on personal levels.

Please try again later. Beautifully written, quirky, with fascinating characters. While much is left to the reader's imagination, the author isn't playing games, but inviting us to imagine and construct our own realities. Unique and brilliantly crafted. I often have a hard time reading short stories - somehow, I'm even pickier about them than about the novels I read.
But in this small collection, with each story I finished, I thought "ok, no, this story's going to be my favorite! Baker's stories are as imaginative as they are real. Every one of them left me with a distinct feeling that I wished to carry with me for a long time.
