The length of these mysteries are just long enough to read in one sitting and I've read one each night before retiring. The characters are unique and well-developed and add much color to these tales. The stories include just enough detail to support the plot logically but do not bog the reader down with unnecessay description.

Because of my reading of these tales, I have sought out other gothic-type mysteries that I hope will continue in the genre of Sherlock Holmes, i. This, The Complete Sherlock Holmes: Volumes The Heirloom Collection , isn't the absolute best Sherlock Holmes collection, but it is extremely good. Most importantly, it does contain all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, though not always in the exact same order as other editions -- making it a little confusing, when comparing different editions, to determine if all the stories are actually included and they are.

When I first purchased it as an ebook, it didn't include all the stories, but before I was even finished reading it, a simple Kindle update added all the rest, making it certifiably "complete. Again, probably not the best Sherlock Holmes collection, but graphics wise, it is certainly the most handsome.

It contains all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Decent color illustrations, but fewer and further between than other editions.

It is something to wonder on I almost hope that in one of the upcoming stories that this happens, just because it would shake things up a bit. The more I read, the more the similarities are apparent from case to case and just once I would like something radically different. Yes, Holmes playing criminal was nice How about a criminal who doesn't confess everything? How about Holmes finding the evil doer and them being exonerated in a court of law because Holmes's evidence is so esoteric that the judge and jury find it unbelievable?

Because, seriously, would most of Holmes's evidence stand up in a court of law? It's more than a little inconceivable. Also, the use of the air gun was far fetched. The Adventure of the Norwood Builder Wow, how petty do you have to be to frame a poor young man for your murder because his mom dumped you? Especially when she dumped you because you tortured cats? The Adventure of the Dancing Men This poor woman lost her husband because this guy from her childhood decided that she belonged to him.

I don't blame Hilton Cubitt for shooting at Abe Slaney, he was a strange man threatening his wife. The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist This poor girl kidnapped and almost forced to married some asshole so he and his buddy could steal all her money!! The Adventure of the Priory School An innocent man died because a spoiled kid what to inherit his father's money instead of his younger brother. The Adventure of Black Peter It never explained why Sherlock was pretending to be a sea captain in the first place I get that it helped him catch the killer but why though?

The woman earned her revenge!! The Adventure of the Three Students The fact that Gilchrist was the most innocent appearing of all 3 students I should have to know that he was the one that did it The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez Another one where I felt bad for the woman in the story. She married a selfish man when she very young and someone she really cares for is being punished because of her husband selfish.

And it ends with the poor woman killing herself because she couldn't deal with killing an innocent man The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter I felt so bad for the football player in this! He had to hide his relationship with the woman he loved because his uncle was an asshole and after everything to lose her it was horrible! The Adventure of the Abbey Grange Sherlock was really compassionate in a lot of the case in this book. This was another where he lets the "criminal" get away because he sympathizes with them. It's a strange moral to put out there.

The Adventure of the Second Stain I felt bad for the woman in this.

This greedy ass blackmailed this poor woman and then she finds out that what she could ruin her husband and put all of England in danger. But there has been a lot of these cases involve scandalous letters. Try as Doyle might to kill him, Sherlock Holmes simply will not stay dead, and returns hale and hearty from his trip over the Reichenbach Falls in this collection of thirteen short stories, originally published in the Strand between and The eye-rolling the reluctant author must have been doing only really shows in the first in the collection, "The Empty House," in which Doyle more or less just hand-waves Holmes back into existence.

Watson, having learned a thing or two during his time Try as Doyle might to kill him, Sherlock Holmes simply will not stay dead, and returns hale and hearty from his trip over the Reichenbach Falls in this collection of thirteen short stories, originally published in the Strand between and Watson, having learned a thing or two during his time with the detective, takes an interest in the locked-room mystery murder of card-playing Earl's son Roger Adair, and in the course of doing a bit of discreet poking around and let's pause to lament the lack of years' worth of stories in which the honorable doctor solves crimes without his better half, shall we?

Watson immediately faints, and I will go to my grave convinced it was from pure, overwhelming rage. Anyway, there's a bit more to it than that, but Doyle's point was the resurrection and all the rest is simple window-dressing. Once Watson, and the reader, recover from the urge to choke Holmes with his non-canonical deerstalker, we move into a series of mostly-lesser-known stories, with "The Dancing Men" in which Sherlock inexplicably can't be fashed to take a train to Norfolk in time to prevent a woman dying and Doyle once more demonstrates his endless fascination with American gang violence and "Charles Augustus Milverton" in which Doyle introduces his slimiest villain and Holmes does very little to very great effect being the stand-outs.

I admit to having a soft-spot for the much smaller scale "The Three Students," in which a cranky Holmes has his Oxbridge library time interrupted by a request to locate a missing exam paper, mostly because my mental images of Sherlock interacting with librarians are wildly entertaining. As with all of Doyle's stories about his detectival duo, the real joy is in the interaction between Holmes and Watson, and the fascinating and rare insights into the mind of the Great Detective.

Holmes's virulent reaction to blackmailers in general and Milverton in particular hints at a story we're left to imagine, as does his insistence in "The Second Stain" that women are "inscrutable. Though I'm not sure I'd ever rank any of the stories in this collection as favorites, any excuse for a happy reunion with the World's Foremost Consulting Detective will do - even if Doyle never gives him the punch in the nose his return so roundly deserved. There is no doubt that I enjoyed this book and all previous books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; following the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his dear friend Watson is difficult not to.

It does, unfortunately, become slightly tedious and reading almost pages of Sherlock Holmes' adventures turns from an enjoyable activity, to a quite tiresome one.

There also seems to be a certain fluctuation in the quality that can be produced by Sir Arthur, as some of his work obviously bests others. I did def There is no doubt that I enjoyed this book and all previous books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; following the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his dear friend Watson is difficult not to.

I did definitely enjoy some of his other books more than I did this one, particularly because I felt it kept me much more engaged, curious and in suspense. This book does of course provide all of that, but with decreased intensity. Holmes, who had supposedly encountered death while engaging in a duel with the evil Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, returns to add a few more adventures to his credit, along with his friend and companion Dr.

The book documents thirteen cases that he undertook post his self — inflicted exile. We know from the beginning that he has been wrongly accused, but it is only when Holmes reveals the entire mystery and the reason do we get to fully comprehend the situation. This is a plot revolving around unrequited love and vengeance. What seems like a bizarre set of images turn out to be the key to the mysterious affair, and we can only marvel at the genius of Holmes. The background revolving around the deciphering of the secret code surely stands ahead of its time. However, a dangerous scheme uncovers, and what seemed to be a harmless turns into a dark bend of mind.

This is certainly one of the most twisted plots that I have read of Holmes, and yet, with his brilliant observations, he is able to solve the mystery.

RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES: The Case Notes

Like the previous stories in this book, this one too traverses to the past, uncovering the history of those involved. The reason for the murder comes to light, and as always, Holmes steals the show. What makes it interesting is that Holmes's negotiation skills come into the forefront, and we soon find that the opponent provides a good enough resistance to our detective.

Now, what could be the purpose of such a weird activity? Initially, it appears to be a whim of a Napoleon — hater, but then Holmes succeeds in revealing the entire truth, and we are left astounded to figure out that a lot lied beyond what met the eyes. The crime here is that someone entered the office of Mr.

Soames, a lecturer, when he was not there, and had a look at the proofs of an upcoming examination. There are three suspects.

The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Illustrated) by Arthur Conan Doyle (3 star ratings)

This is a refreshing change from the murder scenes that form the backdrop of most of the cases documented by Dr. There seems to be no reason for the murder, and no evident logic for the crime to have taken place. Here again, the past plays an important role in performing the crime, and we realize how unfavourable circumstances can lead a person to perform deeds of extreme evil. How important it is to preserve a secret, and to what length can a person go to do so, forms the crux of the story. Initially, a notorious gang is suspected to have played a crucial role in the crime.

Shall I recommend this book to others? Honestly, I think reading this collection of short stories immediately after The Hound of the Baskervilles probably decreased my enjoyment of them just because they seemed slightly duller by comparison.

See a Problem?

That being said, there are some gems in this collection, including one that might be my favorite Sherlock Holmes short story so far: The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. The Adventure of the Six Honestly, I think reading this collection of short stories immediately after The Hound of the Baskervilles probably decreased my enjoyment of them just because they seemed slightly duller by comparison. The Adventure of the Six Napoleons is probably the easiest of all of Sherlock Holmes' cases to figure out.

So famously the return of SH saw Holmes being brought back to life. But did Conan Doyle need such a device? Watson had already began many stories with a wee introduction that explains why he chose this particular story over however many others he could have written about. Conan Doyle could have written Holmes stories forever even after Holmes himself had been killed off in front of witnesses this time. It's Watson's death the would have been absolutely final!

The stories become a little more tiring at each turn and the portrayal of women is also becoming wearying after a few more hours with them. That said, I still admire what Doyle did in creating this character and how the influence is still pervasive today. Remember to look closely at the cover of all these "complete" Sherlock Holmes books. With the wonders of capitalistically fueled competition, each edition of all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is beginning to look more and more similar. Not all are created quite as equal as one would think, however. Read on to find out more. In my quest to find the holy grail of Sherlock Holmes literature, aka; THE definitive collection of original, Conan Doyle penned stories, I actually ended up buying and reading and rereading 3 different versions.

My assessment of all 3 is as follows: The Ultimate Collection - http: It DOES include all 4 novels and 56 short stories, but the book is all text, with no real illustrations to speak of. When I first purchased it as an ebook, it did NOT include all the stories, but before I was even finished reading it, a simple Kindle update added all the rest, making it certifiably "complete.

At any rate, the "Film and Television Adaptations" and Beyond the Canon" synopsis sections at the end of the book are also included, but do not appear in the other Sherlock Holmes collections.

Kindle formatting isn't so good in this one, however, unfortunately. My five star rating is for the writing itself, which is of course, practically peerless.
