Some time ago, while she was pregnant with their second child, he left his wife of many years and very publicly fell for a much younger blonde. He dated this younger woman for several years, yet never divorced his wife, spending part of his holidays with her and their children every year.

Last year, the relationship with his girlfriend came to an end, and since then he has been accompanied by his wife to public appearances. Though it is not confirmed they are together again, the public — including the yellow press — wishes them well and applauds their effort at reconciliation. Whitby was her hero, and he in turn had a great affection for his friend's little sister which was one of the reasons he hadn't noticed her as a woman all grown up.
Additionally, Whitby enjoyed his rakish lifestyle with no entanglements and the freedom to do as he pleased. At the annual shooting party that her brother James and wife Sophia hosted, Lily's mother was working hard at maneuvering a proper match between Lily and the youngest son of an Earl. Sophia knowing of Lily's feelings for Whitby suggested that Lily use her feminine wiles to make Whitby take notice of her as a woman.
As Lily's campaign towards seduction began showing promise, tragedy struck as Whitby's fast lifestyle seemed to catch up with him and he was struck down with a mysterious illness. As Whitby, hovered between life and death, and the prognosis of his illness seemed dire. Lily resolved that she would do whatever she had in the time that was left to win his heart, and provide him an heir before his title passed to his hated cousin Magnus. Whitby's honor raged against his body's reactions to Lily's seductive offer, but honor be damned - Lily was too passionate to resist.
They married intending to make the most of the time that was left to them, then as mysteriously as it had came on, the illness went into a remission - Whitby would live! Lily's joy was marred over concern that Whitby would now feel trapped especially as she now suspected that she was pregnant. Whitby always knew that at some time he'd settle down, but thinking he was dying he entered into the marriage thinking he wouldn't be giving up his freedom. Now, knowing he would live he had was finally realizing that it wasn't the freedom he was clinging to so much as learning to overcome the dread of opening his heart to love.
The reader will feel the despair, the heartbreak, passion and the joy of Whitby and Lily in this very excellent character driven romance as Lily, thinking her love alone would be enough for both of them struggled while waiting for Whitby to discover the truth of what she knew lay in his heart.

And he only sees her as his best friend's baby sister and certainly not as a woman. But at a shooting party, she finally gets her courage to go after him. But it turns out that Whitby believes he's dying, and a lifetime of acting as though he had all the time in the world leaves him with many regrets.
So he can't possibly turn down a chance to end his life experiencing Lily's love. But things might not be so great if he survives after all. I'm torn Lily has been in love with Whitby all her life. I'm torn on this story.
Love According to Lily
This comes about sort of like a drama, where we follow the experience of these two characters through the realization of feelings, marriage and pregnancy. It's not particularly angsty or dramatic, but more subtle. I kind of liked that and as engaged as I was with the characters, I couldn't help but feel it needed something more to hold my long-term interest.
I liked the characters and I loved going through their journey with them. Even though I got a bit irritated with Lily and her obsession with Whitby, especially given that she knew next to nothing about him other than he used to play with her as a kid. That's hero worship, not love.

But, their coming to terms with their relationship and navigating the pitfalls of marriage under stressful circumstances and pregnancy and fears about loss was an interesting journey, but probably not one I'd want to read again. May 17, Readitnweep rated it liked it Shelves: The first third of the book drew me in, as I enjoyed the angst of Lily's unrequited love for her brother's friend Earl Whitby.
I didn't care for the age difference, but that's a personal bugaboo.

Then, things took a turn. While I applaud Lily's honesty with him, her complete frankness seemed odder for the time than was expressed. Her forwardness was a bit over the top of believability for a virgin. The pseudo antagonist, Whitby's cousin is dealt with far too easily and I was left wondering why he'd been included. Applause goes to the crafting of Maion, however, who did have purpose and yet the author used this character's story to the emottional hilt. Well done how she came back around. Whitby's feelings towards Lily turned too quickly at the start, but the pacing of his journey improved. Both main characters were well crafted other than that. Very good job with the sickness and a solid explanation of that after the epilogue.
Enjoyed this book and stayed with it to the end. Nov 01, Bunga rated it liked it Shelves: Fast reading tapi bisa bikin mewek beberapa kali.
I chose this rating because this book had me addicted from the first page. I recommend this book to anybody who loves romance with a plot and sex scenes And really I think this is a book that could be turned into a movie like Jane. You know, I want to like this series so much, and it's just not quite there.
There was an awful lot of melodrama in this one and to some degree, I didn't completely believe in the relationship, which is a problem since this is a trope I usually love. I suspect I won't be checking any of the other books in the series out anyway, especially given how it seems Annabelle's story will be playing out.
Nov 08, Dee rated it liked it. This book had been on my bookshelf for forever and I finally read it. It was interesting enough - I finished it in one day, however there was something missing. I just wasn't completely taken in by the story. I feel that has great potential.
Dec 04, Karen Wilson rated it it was ok Shelves: Edward was forced to evaluate his life when faced with very dire prospects. Throughout the story, he also grows up as he becomes responsible for more than just his own life; in fact responsible for someone he cares deeply about. The story itself is good and the supporting cast, especially Marion's point of view was well-done. There's nothing larger than life or fantastical in the story; which may or may not be a good thing. The author's afterword explanation did NOT endear Edward to me.
Oct 18, J. I did enjoy this one, it was a bit different with him sick, her seducing him, then her sick and their marriage all over the place. Aug 28, Krissy rated it really liked it Shelves: I loved this book. This is the book that had me going out and buying every Julianne MacLean book I could find. The heroine has loved the hero since she was a child. He was her brother's best friend. The poor guy was sick through a big portion of this book. BUT it was required in order for the storyline to go as it was supposed to. I enjoyed it immensely!
Sep 05, Rebecca Huston rated it it was amazing Shelves: I think this was the last really good novel by Julianne MacLean before her books went badly downhill.
I really did enjoy this one about a heroine with a scandal in her past and a hero is so very honourable under the caddish exterior. One of my keepers. It is so difficult to love someone for so long without that person noticing you.
That makes things even more difficult.
