I give it 4 stars because it's a great story. A dark, graphic page turner. But 3 stars because of the editing. I strongly recommend better editing for 2 reasons. There were words missing and it was annoying to have to reread sentences to make sure I could understand what I was reading.
Unfortunately the author used UK English and slang for dialogue for American characters. Character developme I give it 4 stars because it's a great story. Character development for the mysterious Thai chief of police, two successful UK business men suspected of pedophia, the vigilante , and the chief editor of a UK tabloid are particularly good.
The ending felt incomplete because there wasn't enough info or resolution regarding the vigilante. I'm going to read another book by the author. I won't say I enjoyed The Hact but it was very engaging. Child sexual abuse, kidnaping, graphic violence, and suspense. I dearly wished to rate this book higher. But two things struck a star each. First, the very good though: The plot is stellar. If there is one thing that Mr. Patching did very well, it was creating a plot that grabbed the reader from the beginning. The dark theme is, to me, a major positive as well. While I thought the body count detracted a little, it fit the theme.
Now, the two detractors: The narrative structure is highly distracting. I understand the idea of telling the story in real time seq I dearly wished to rate this book higher. I understand the idea of telling the story in real time sequence. But the chapters were so long that the near-constant shifts gave me whiplash. When combined with the omniscient narrator, this was just too much. Tied in with the narrative issue is the excess of characters overwhelming the narrative. Rapid introductions in such a scattered narrative again overwhelm an otherwise amazing story.
Read this book, but be prepared for a messy structure and an over-abundance of characters. Jun 30, Colin Rochford rated it really liked it. The Hack by Will Patching Under normal circumstances novels that appear to be heavy on teaching and social comment are an anathema to me, but this one is different. Here we have an honest to goodness storyline with well-developed characters interesting plots and sub-plots, twists and turns which were enough to take my mind away from the nastiness inherent in the story, and allow me to enjoy the ride.
That being said nothing detracted from the main theme of the book. Will has a brave approach to his The Hack by Will Patching Under normal circumstances novels that appear to be heavy on teaching and social comment are an anathema to me, but this one is different. Will has a brave approach to his writing and I like that it is crisp, clear and accurate. Descriptions and imagery are good enough to draw you inside the minds of the characters and involve you with the story.
I liked it very much. Nov 07, John Harris rated it really liked it. This was a good thriller, told from different points of view, which made for compelling reading. The Hack is so called due to the murderer killing people with a knife, a computer genius hacking US government systems, and a journalist chasing the same story. And what about the people running the Child Abuse ring - can they keep their secrets hidden and carry on as before? The book is well paced, and the different strands come together in an explosive finale. I really enjoyed the way the plot was revealed and built up to the crescendo. Jul 10, Uwe rated it did not like it.
This story could have been a very good one. It had rich people, pedophiles, computer geeks, hackers, CIA and FBI, Agents in Thailand, prostitution and a very eager police chef with a sad family story. As I said could have been Did I mention the old boys club and their fixer? I enjoy reading books about the new age of hacking computers.

At first the idea scared me, but then I started realizing how smart these people are that do this, and the governments of the countries they live in to use their abilities for a good purpose. Catching those that do it for bad reasons. I like the idea that it is a person with a mental disability that has the ability to get into the most secure sites and make good results against the criminals.
All in all this was a very exciting story with interesting characters. Again, it is written by a British author and he uses terms that are not what we are used to reading. Aug 01, Julian White rated it really liked it. Another disturbing but very readable book - here the subject matter is paedophilia and sex tourism rather than outright psychopathy. Not to everyone's taste, obviously - but Patching's work is well described as 'gritty'. A minor disappointment I thi Another disturbing but very readable book - here the subject matter is paedophilia and sex tourism rather than outright psychopathy. A minor disappointment I think is that the US President, whose reputation seems at risk for much of the book, seems to get away with it at the end. I received this from the author's website - so a free copy. Mar 21, Jerry Walch rated it it was amazing. As far as first novels goes, Will Patching has hit the bulls-eye with The Hack. This story is a real page turner filled with action and suspense.
The characters are so lifelike that they are easy to like and root for, the heroes and heroine are people you want to see win out. As I have said many times in the past, I'm really not a big fan of Great Britian based mysteries, but Will has won me over as a fan.

May 20, Donna Wilkins rated it it was amazing. I got given this book as a read by the author. I had never received a free book before and I was totally thrilled. There was a warning at the start of the book regard violence and language. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved Kate and Johnny and Doug. Even Inspector Lee and Cody were stand out characters. Although the story was graffic unfortunately it realistic, and I mean very true to life. I really enjoy the story and hope Kate and Doug can see there way back to each other.
This is most d I got given this book as a read by the author. This is most definitely a thriller, it fast exciting and I am gutted it's over.

He knows he loves Kate and wants to see her, not aware she is pregnant with his baby. Will Patching write with such description that you not only read the words, but see the action as well. This book was slow starting, then it got hold of you and wouldn't let go until reaching the end. One person found this helpful. While this book didn't hook me in as much as the first one, it was still a great read. The book mostly takes place on a fictional Thai island and brings back several characters that were in the first book, while also introducing some great new characters. What begins as a murder investigation on a paradise island quickly starts to reveal corruption and sinister crimes where money is valued more than lives.
Many of the themes in this book are based on actual issues in our world today, which makes it extra disturbing. The book is fast-paced, hard to put down, and well researched. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book! Though there were some unlikely scenarios in this story, if you can just go with the flow and not analyze too much, this is a good book. I find Kate to be the weakest character, and enjoy Hunter and new character Chagos.
Will Patching has done it again, with engaging characters, superb writing, and a thrilling story motivated by real-world ills. I'm anxiously awaiting the third book in the series - every one of his books has been a winner.
Great second book in another of this authors trilogies! Want to find out about this man called Hunter, pick up "The Hack", then follow it with this book. Cleverly crafted, skillfully written, if you like books with characters you can believe, read these books. Plenty of action in this crime thriller. Will Patching knows how to tell a story so you feel like you're right in the middle of the action. This whole trilogy is very good. See all 21 reviews.
