I guess it could be called a British police procedural, with literary overtones.

Teenaged sisters Cass and Emma disappeared on the same night. Told from the alternate perspectives of Cass and Abby, a forensic psychologist with the FBI who is assigned to the case, information is fed to the reader slowly and in deliberate pieces.
This is a well-crafted psychological thriller that, like many psychological thrillers, relies on an unreliable narrator. Emma in the Night is also an interesting exploration of narcissistic personality disorder and its effect on family life. Do you ever think about how different your life might have been if you had made a single different choice? What if you had gone to a different college? Pursued a different career path? Bailed on the blind date where you met your spouse? Or gotten fired from that job? Life is full of what ifs, and unknowns. Jason Dessen has an unexceptional life. Through a seemingly impossible string of events, Jason finds himself coming face-to-face with a series of scenarios of what his life could have been and he finds himself frantic to get back to his old life, to save his wife and son, and maybe even save himself.
Dark Matter is a fast-paced thriller with some dodgy science. Great for action lovers, although serious science-lovers may want to give this one a pass. What good books have you read lately? Heck, finding positive meaningful and not frankly insulting depictions of LGBTQ characters is a chore in and of itself! If you were to file that amount down to a manga that is remarkably emotionally intelligent, as well as aimed at either the young or young at heart and has been translated into English and released in the west!
And I am not talking about the vast array of manga with a focus on gay relationships, which have a different intent and audience in mind than this one does. As I understand it and I am, again, admittedly very ignorant when speaking on this matter, so please bear that in mind Japanese culture is currently going through an identity crisis related to its real and present LGBTQ population.
Truly, albeit quietly, groundbreaking?

The story focuses on themes of loss, family, masculinity, love, and emotional honesty. Still trying to contextualize the feelings that Yaichi is haunted by for his brother — a sorrow over his death that he feels unable to express and articulate, as well as a lingering feeling of betrayal, leftover from when Ryoji announced that he was gay — Yaichi finds himself the mostly unwilling host to the biggest shock he could have imagined —.
The idea that Mike - and his brother, for that matter - are deviants is something that lingers often in the periphery of the way that Yaichi views his house guest, sometimes acted out, in spite of his desire to provide a good standard of hospitality. I think what is most important in this story is that this is not a one-sided story or education, but is rather a sharing of knowledge between two very different outlooks on life and a realization of how two different people cope with emotional trauma and culture shock.
The muscular, thick bodies of men are portrayed as things of beauty, sometimes almost coming off as, somehow, delicate. Save this for your drive when you return to work for a month of Mondays and then some. Lester Markel , but I have been kicking around the idea that in some way the act of New Journalism does what in theatre they call breaking the fourth wall; that moment when a performer looks out at the audience and addresses them directly. One of my favorite examples of this can be found in the early moments of the classic comedy, Airplane! I mean, just the effort that went into creating the book is impressive: It may be brilliant and memorable like Airplane!
Take my word for it, just take Airplane! And what could inspire fear more than the terror of uncertainty? Until Dawn is a game that was dreamt up originally as a Playstation Move title, but after it had been canceled for use with that periphery, it rose up from the dead to live once more. After all, what could be a more fitting turn of fate for something from the horror genre? The gameplay is focused on player choices, investigation, and quick time events. All of these aspects remind me of what was promised with Heavy Rain and, for that matter, most games made by Quantic Dream , but never were able to be fully delivered on.
Okay, with a definite honorary mention of Alan Wake thrown in for good measure, with the caveat of it being more of a supernatural thriller. The Lodge - and the character of Josh Washington - provide a great commentary on horror movies, due to the fact that the Washingtons made much of their money from the making of cult horror movies.
This is a game that does not shy away from some more meta commentary, on both the nature of horror as well as some fourth-wall breaking inclusions.

This aspect of the game reminds me of the similar attempt in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories , but it is far better utilized here. In fact, it seems as though this is a game that thrives on concepts that other studios have attempted and have failed. I personally recommend not looking at anything else available on the title online, because spoilers on this game are abundant and easy to find! So while our copy sat languishing, the digital copies were being perused and used. I felt that I had found something special that people had been missing out on seeing and using, but that was fortunately not the case! I can share it with many, many friends, all at the same time even.
The Internet Archive offers the book in many different downloadable formats, whereas the little volume I found in our storage stacks can only ever rest in one person's library or hands. It reminded me too of all the wonderful resources that Internet Archive is preserving. Recently someone was looking for DVDs with old newsreel clips, as were often shown in theaters before the movie.
And we do have several DVDs with these clips. So with the Olympics coming up I looked for newsreels about the Olympics and found this. If you're like me, you do your favorite hobby because it's fun -- but you also want to believe it has some kind of deeper significance. Now there is a good read that ups my rationalizing game. Tristan Donovan's It's All a Game: Ancient Egypt's senet appears to have been a game about the afterlife. A contemporary one in Mesopotamia told your fortune.
The rules and pieces in chess evolved to reflect different kinds of nobility in India, Arabia and Europe. The gambling game backgammon was around for centuries before it became a craze in the Roaring '20s and then again in the wild and crazy '70s after the doubling cube raised the stakes. The first version of Monopol y was designed in the progressive era to discourage greedy capitalism, but it became a glorification of rapacious landlords in the s.
The Game of Life promoted s-style consumerism and was as vanilla as the decade. The most successful modern board game -- The Settlers of Catan -- is a riff on the adventures of Viking settlers, but it's trading mechanism is also a lure for players to cooperate even while competing. The whole point of the game is that people must cooperate or die. It is the most popular of several recent games in which the players try to beat the game instead of each other.
Donovan's book is more than sociology. He also tells a lot of stories about the obsessive people who created some of the most famous games we play. My guess is "fake news" will be featured. Evan - Married, three children, two grandchildren, formerly a newspaper journalist, now a public librarian, at all times a board game nut.
A Few Good Books: Looking for a book recommendation? Here are a few good books I've enjoyed lately The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender Just shy of nine years old, Rose Edelstein bites into the lemon cake that her mother has baked and discovers she can taste the emotions her mother was feeling as she made the cake. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch Do you ever think about how different your life might have been if you had made a single different choice? Long before becoming a librarian, Emily was an avid library patron. Her favorite book is Anne of Green Gables by L. Books for introverts and the people who love them.
It's National Introverts Week! Although we value quiet time, introverts are not necessarily shy. Growing up, I was the only introvert in an extroverted family and I endured several loving efforts to help me change I lovingly resisted. Fortunately, recent years have seen a reevaluation of this label. I always knew there was nothing wrong with me but it's nice to see the rest of the world catching up.
Here are a few books in our collection which highlight challenges introverts face and the strengths we bring to the table. If you like Sherlock Holmes, give these titles a try. A human cell holds 23 pairs of chromosomes, each containing protective caps at each end called telomeres. Enzymes called telomerases protect the telomeres and reduce DNA damage thought to contribute to tissue aging. But as we age, our cells produce less telomerase; telomeres are cut shorter and eventually fail to protect DNA from damage.
Researchers boosted telomerase in the mice cells -- which hold 20 pairs of chromosomes -- to prevent telomeres from getting shorter.
They found restoring the enzyme not only stopped aging but revived failing organs and even restored dark fur to mice who had turned grey. DePinho said the mice that were equivalent to ages 80 to 90 in human years returned to the equivalent of middle age. Previous studies suggest that even in humans, shorter telomeres may be associated with age-related diseases such as heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. In fact, the brains of the age-modified mice were 75 percent of the size of a normal brain, much as happens in a patient with Alzheimer's disease.
But when researchers reactivated the telomerase, the brains returned to a normal size, according to the study. The aging process is complex and telomeres are just one element that contributes to its course. But DePinho said this is one step in learning more about not only the slowing of aging, but also the reversal. Still, DePinho said the research is an early look down the pipeline for subsequent studies. Researchers plan to study the potential benefits in normal aging in mice before understanding whether the process might work in humans. Patients' Children Join Studies.
