The Only Way Out for Henry Clatt by Brewster Hastings (English) Hardcover Book F
There was an error posting your review. Hastings draws out the reality that, whether one wants to admit or acknowledge it or not, God will meet someone where he is no matter who or where he is in a way that speaks to him. The real strength and attraction of the stories lies in the emotional and spiritual depth of the characters. It would seem Fr.

Further, if I may say so as someone who was once in Fr. I found it interesting that the stories did not preach or judge the characters regarding their spirituality. Instead, the stories present people, in their individual context and extent of spiritual development, honestly and realistically wrestling with his or her own spirituality in his or her own way, each revealing God intervening in their lives in ways unique to each character.
Interestingly, the various stories do not really come to a tidy conclusion that ties up all of the loose ends of the plots.
This seems intentional as the purpose of the book, and its stories, seems to be, as implied above, simply giving a vignette of various people of various types in various times and situations encountering God and spirituality and working through it in those brief moments. It allows the reader to identify with the characters as, I would think, most people have found themselves with the thoughts and feelings presented in each of the characters at one time or another. The stories, I think, help the reader identify the moments of his own spiritual life and development in those of the characters in the stories.
The encounters with the divine in the stories are sometimes obvious and other times subtle, but always identifiable and relatable. At the end of each story, the reader is often left with a knowing recognition of the spiritual component in each story as something he can identify with in his own life as well. Ultimately, I would recommend this book of short stories to anyone who is interested in reading short, compelling, punchy stories which involve realistic people encountering God in ways that should seem familiar to us all.
Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. This book deals with ministers from different denominations trying to rescue a man who has gotten caught up in a group that is evil. The characterizations of the ministers were delightful, and I believed that they truly were exemplars of their different faith traditions. I found the book a page turner.
More so knowing the proceeds are going to a very worthwhile cause. Made for a very interesting topic with a discussion group. I got my autographed copy and just a week or so later had a train commute with time to read it.
Death Notice for The Reverend K. Brewster Hastings
I quickly wished that the ride was longer or that I had set aside a few solid hours to read the book in its entirety at one sitting. The prose and style of the author give the book lots of forward momentum so that it reads almost like a mystery novel. This is a bit unusual in the realm of spiritually nourishing literature, so should be valued for that. The writing itself is very good, clean and sparse mostly, but with enough details to touch, amuse, affect, engage as needed.

The scenes in a diner always made me feel hungry - only author who did that to me so frequently was Hemingway! The plot also has a lot of drive and there's nothing to distract you from the focus of the novella. The characters are engaging and will certainly remind the reader of people they know, or would like to know.
Hastings respects both their humanity and their privacy, something too rare in modern writing of all kinds I've found. Best of all, you can understand and relate to all of them, who they are and why they do what they do: There's plenty here for almost any reader: At pages of 14 font, it provides an easy thought-provoking read perfect for a couple hours on a park bench at lunch, a quiet morning over coffee, or your monthly book club. This book deals with a struggling author
