KIRKUS REVIEW

In Earthly Mission , Robert Calderisi sets out to prove him wrong. Much of what Calderisi describes is indeed admirable, and his decision to focus on individuals within the Catholic Church — nuns and missionaries as well as popes and cardinals — makes for lively reading. A levelheaded work by an author determined to hold the church to its humanitarian ideals. Its critics will find his praise of its mission similarly discomforting. Both can learn, though, from his work. He offers a cogent analysis of both the present and future trends in development.

Robert Calderisi , a former World Bank director concerned with issues of international development, lectures widely on Africa, development, and foreign aid.

Editorial Reviews

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I had hoped for a better book that would detail the role of the Catholic Church in the poor world. We need a good analysis of Catholic approaches to development. There are many very good stories of persons or groups largely Catholic that have responded or are responding to the needs of the poor. They are delightful to read.

The chapter on Catholic Social Teaching is superficial. There are also some factual errors.

But what most bothered me was the tone of parts of the book. The author is condescending in his remarks about Catholic doubts about modernization, free trade, and [neoliberal] economic reforms, claiming these damage developing countries.

Earthly Mission of Cosmonauts. « STARMUS Festival

His chapter on contraception was one of the most troubling in this regard. I have my doubts and concerns about the way the teaching on contraception has played out in reality.

But what struck me were two remarks that went beyond an objective analysis. There are other points where I find the analysis weak, especially in regard to structural injustice. Perhaps some of these weaknesses are due to the difficulty of a detail analysis.

Mission Accomplished

It is a flawed introduction, partly because I believe that his analysis is colored by his former role in the World Bank as well as his admiration of the Acton Institute. I realize that my critique of this book is colored by my work in Central America. As a recovering Christian, I'm careful to avoid books that offering mindless platitudes or empty condemnation of religion.

I had no trouble reading Calderisi's book. It brings to light information that you may not know about the Church's contribution to world development esp in Africa , while not shying away from the Church's errors and omissions.
