Maybe I should just stick to Maude? Silver Season, I love the Maude! But the Maude is my favorite.
Poetry and Renaissance style: I suppose they drop the latter? If you know a language well, you can see where they go astray. I began but never finished War and Peace.
Bestselling Series
I confess that at the time I did not look up the translator. It was when I was in my twenties. I thought the characters the most realistic, the most believably real I had ever come across. But somehow it was not enough to hold me.
I'm trying to find the best translation — War and Peace Q&A
I loved Anna Karenina the character and was intensely irritated by Levin from the other big novel. I want to know what your verdict was after reading more of all of them. I labored to decide which to read, choosing Briggs in theory, or Mandelkar, but then my local bookstore only had Pevear and Volokhonsky, so I just finished that. Loved the book, and suspect I loved some of the translation for its accuracy and evocation of Russian, but also was occasionally annoyed by sentences that barely hung on to readability in English. I finished reading the Maude. I do love the Maude.
Oh, and I really love the Constance Garnett. But there were no notes in that edition, and I do like to read a little bit about the history…. I found it rather clunky. I read the Garnett translation first time around. I was surprised that I could go from one translation to another without feeling distracted. I love Anna Karenina!
