Some folks have called it bland and predictable but for me it was a nicely paced and thoroughly enjoyable read. Some of the scene setting gave me the sense of actually being there.

Heinlen explores the notions of the self in double star, and how one person quite literally becomes another. This is a story of personal alchemy, and the psychological changes the protagonist undergoes are far more vast than the ones that are merely skin-deep.

Double Star is best described as a futuristic political thriller, and delivers a satisfying close leaving me with much to mull over. While I did not read - or in this case listen to - the novel because of the anniversary, it does seem appropriate that I picked this time to read what is generally considered the first true science fiction novel.

As we know, the movie recounts the story of a scientist who, along with his assistant, piece together a human-like creature from the pieces of dug up corpses. Most infamously, Henry Frankenstein's assistant Fritz acquires the brain of a criminal for the Creature played by Boris Karloff , thus lending the story the conflict it needs when the Creature comes alive and begins wreaking havoc throughout the local countryside.

In this fascinating new collection from Wesleyan University Press readers get to see a great anthology of original science fiction from Germany and Austria spanning over a century of work. Editor Franz Rottensteiner offers a lengthy introduction spanning the entire history of science fiction in Germany and Austria, going into detail on the important authors starting back in the eighteenth century and continuing up to the present. Rottensteiner also does a great job of discussing German and Austrian writers who were eventually published in American magazines and anthologies and became popular in the United States.
The anthology is divided into sections by era, the first five stories being published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
