Because this book was good and satisfying science fiction, I look forward to reading the next book. Christopher Nuttall's Sufficiently Advanced Technology is a fascinating and fluently written science fiction book that will keep you entertained from start to finish. I can recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading entertaining science fiction books and stories, because it's good escapism.

Good and interesting science fiction entertainment! Mar 21, Joseph P Costa Jr rated it it was amazing. Quite an interesting book Slow start, too much about preparation. Too much since their surveys missed the colony ship. However, it explains many things. I would buy a sequel if Christopher can figure out how to explain how the child will be able to manipulate the quantum foam. Apr 24, John rated it really liked it.
This author is growing in skill every book Some of his early works were not as well written but he has mastered his technique and this novel was a real gem. This book has a somewhat different story than the usual run-of-the-mill science fiction stories. At least within the realm of the type of science fiction books that I usually read.
The concept of science versus magic has been used in a fair amount of books already so that in itself is not very new. However, I found the setup in this book to be a bit different and quite interesting to read. The book itself is well written and paints a reasonable detailed universe as the book progresses. One thing This book has a somewhat different story than the usual run-of-the-mill science fiction stories.
I found that a bit distasteful. The social dreaming nonsense about no one having to work unless they wanted to was a bit misplaced in an otherwise reasonably intelligent story as well. Apart from that I quite enjoyed the book. Most of it is spent on scientific exploration trying to understand the seemingly magical powers that some elements of the population appears to have. Near the end of the book it does heat up with a bit of action though. The author seems to have the intention that this will indeed be the first book in a series Inverse Shadows.
If a follow-up book is made I will definitely pick it up. Actually, this was the first book by this author that I have read and, given the qualities of this one, I will more than likely have a go at a few more books from Christopher Nuttall. It doesn't seem to be as polished as many of his other books. I'm not satisfied with the explanation of how a society works that has no money, where everyone has more than they need, were people don't need to work if they don't feel like it, where people only work for status. People are all comfortable but people working for status in their fields can get better. I'm interested in where the author will take book two. I was curious about the While an entertaining story, it could have been better.
I was curious about the author's science fiction. I'm not sure yet. Attractive blurb because it is suggestive of the Culture Universe created by Iain Banks. And it is dedicated to Mr. Banks, who left us all prematurely. This is a completely unfair setup for the author, who provides a different universe with many well-developed ideas.

We've all read a book that starts out well, and then sort of dwindles into a common story in which we have lost interest.

This book was almost there and then the author did a fantastic job of rejuvenating his storyline when it was needed most and brings the book to an excellent conclusion. I almost felt as if he had channeled the late Mr. A very satisfying read. I had trouble getting into this book; it took until almost half-way in to actually start enjoying it. I can't really pinpoint what it was but it seemed forced and the Confederation doesn't seem believable. The story line is interesting but the title catch phrase is overdone.
Sufficiently Advanced Technology by Christopher G. Nuttall
I ended up liking it enough to want to see the next step in the story. I liked the premise of the book; to some technology is like magic and in this book, the basics of magic lies in technology as well, in this case the ability to manipulate "quantum foam". For an interesting read on this foam, here is a link: I recommend this book! This was an engaging read with a solid premise. Unfortunately the writing was a bit off and the wrap-up was sloppy.
The title would have remained clever if the author hadn't dangled its meaning in my face three times. I will begrudgingly read the sequels so that I can learn the secrets of the quantum foam. New to me, this author ingeniously combines technology, both understood and sufficiently advanced as to seem like magic. Really well done, well paced, interesting plot.
Nov 30, Samantha rated it liked it. This was an okay sci-fi. I felt the ending was a little abrupt, but it seems like this might be the first of a series? Although dedicated to Iain Banks, Iain Banks it wasn't. Some interesting ideas but more plot than story. Oct 29, John C Jocelyn rated it it was amazing. Great idea Really neat idea that could be overplayed and gimmicky in the hands of a lesser author, but Nuttall pulls it off.
I would definitely purchase the sequel.
