After visiting all the major religious sites, including the River Jordan, the pair magically are transported back to the time of Jesus, seeing for themselves, what really occurred there.

He really is one of the great nineteenth-century novelists; he is surely only not a household name because he came from Portugal, rather than France or England or Russia. The Relic is less formally accomplished than The Maias or The Crime of Padre Amaro —or at least less unified and less clear in its aims. The novel was criticized when it first appeared for this disconcerting mixture. Specifically, critics questioned whether a man as amusingly seedy and abject as the hypocritical anti-hero Teodorico Raposo would be capable of having such a rich and resonant dream as that attributed to him in the novel.
The sensibility through which the dream sequence, and the associated descriptions of phantasmagoric desert landscapes and a surreal, relic-tourist Jerusalem, are filtered seems much more plausibly that of the writer himself than the hapless and banal Teodorico. The Lisbon-set sequences are entertaining in their sly satire on bourgeois Catholic hyper-piety and hypocrisy, in a manner reminiscent of The Crime of Padre Amaro ; and the lyric episodes in the pilgrimage sequence are enjoyable in a very different way, if you go with the flow.
Beneath its satire, the novel contains quite an interesting and thoughtful meditation on Christianity, its history, and its moral message. This element serves as a bridge between the two parts of the work, and it supplies a thematic unity that balances the stylistic disparities noted above. I would say, on balance, that it is a highly experimental novel, rather than an obviously failed one. My jury is out. View all 6 comments. Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo?

Published in , its a novel which still has the power to shock and surprise.
It defies catagorisation, is slightly bitter, sacreligious, flippant, poignant, reverant and wilfully provocative. It tells the story of a young man - a posh lad, really - who wants his rich auntys inheritance. As his aunt is very religious, especially in the keeping up appearances side of things, the hero does his best to make sure she t This is a fascinating, flawed book.

Each time it seems to be something it slithers out of the pigeon hole and laughs at the reader. Every writer knows that even these days you must pick genres and stick to them; that if you write one successful book you are supposed to write more or less the same one over and over and that there are circles of critics, cliques, agents, publishers, journalists, bloggers who will let you know the minute you step out of line - a line they have created around what should and should not be considered art.
But there is plenty to enjoy.

- The Relic by Eça de Queirós;
Eca had travelled in the region and the descriptions of the middle eastern countryside and atmosphere are gorgeous. He also took himself to London and studied old documents on Jerusalem which inform the descriptions of life there - some of the biblical scenes really do hum with scents and sounds. I think Eca started off with the idea of wanting to write a historical novel and this is what came out. He had new ideas, new books to write, new pictures in his head.

In her Introduction to the novel, its translator argues that this conclusion gives relevance to the earlier dream sequence, in which Teodorico discovers that the Resurrection of Jesus was a lie that created the foundations of Christianity. It was the book's rejection of any moral focus and the "rewriting of Christianity as a myth based on a well-intentioned lie" that inevitably led to criticism in Portugal when it was first published.
Teodorico is an entertaining figure, who for much of the novel tries to outdo his aunt in her piety in the hope of a large inheritance. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Relic Cover of the English-language version.
