This book was so intense and nerve-racking which is why I rated the book 5-star. Anthony Horowitz is a great author and he makes you never put the book down. It is so intense and it is full of so many criminal minds that you have to realize that Alex Rider is a 14 year-old genius. Another genius in this book is Mr Smithers who is a really fat person who makes awesome but realistic gadgets for Alex.

Aug 20, Kyra Blog of a Bookaholic rated it it was amazing. Mar 15, Sophia Buhrow rated it really liked it. Well it seems that I started on book five, no wonder I am so confused, but that's fine. Most of the characters that were mentioned, the ones I'm confused about, are not in this book. I like spy stories, so as things went on, my heart raced faster as things got more intense. Sure it didn't help that I had other things stressing me out at the same time, but I'm fairly sure that I'm okay.

So yes, I'm on the fifth book, but it begins with Alex Rider just coming back from his Personal Response: So yes, I'm on the fifth book, but it begins with Alex Rider just coming back from his latest mission from MI6. He gets home and practically leaves right away to go to Venice, where he was told he would find something called Scorpia, turns out it is a criminal organization, that is world wide and very powerful.

Following what he thought was nothing more than an ordinary boat with a scorpion on it, he is led to a palace where he eventually breaks in. Hoping to find something on Scorpia, he goes off the name of Julia Rothman and ends up finding her desk, her vicious pet tiger, and her wing-man, Nile. Nile is a skilled combat artist, and he knocks Alex out and puts him in a cell to drown when the canal waters rise. Miraculously he escapes, and makes his way to a biochemical place, looking for new answers.

BASE jumping of a cliff to get inside, he runs once again into Nile.

This time though, he recognizes Alex and takes him to see Mrs. They talk, Alex is told about his father and how died, and on a whim, he joins Scorpia. Alex is taken to a secret training camp, where he is trained in the arts of assassination. After that he is sent to kill someone named Mrs. Jones, who was the person who gave the command to kill Alex's dad. He had gotten into her apartment, but his bullet was stopped by a bullet proof glass wall, which he had not seen, though he would have missed anyways.

Immediately he is caught and is taken to MI6 where he is told about a letter to the prime minister, saying that Scorpia plans to kill hundreds of thousands of school children all at once, using a weapon they called Invisible Sword. Joining back up with MI6, he is sent back to Scorpia. Rothman then takes him to the place where "IS" is really kept, and he watches as the clock ticks down to the bloodbath, and his own death. The machinery used to kill are satellite dishes set on an air balloon that will send special waves that will trigger the release of cyanide into all the targeted children.

Alex eventually breaks the machinery by setting the platform of fire, using the propane.

Scorpia (Alex Rider, #5) by Anthony Horowitz

The platform burns and falls off, but the fireproof canopy lets Alex hold on until he is slowly guided down to the ground. Landing, he goes home and a week later a man named Alan Blunt calls him back to MI6. Blunt, had called in a man who had been kidnapped by Scorpia. The man told Alex that his dad had not been working with Scorpia, but with MI6. They had set up a fake death for John Rider, Alex's dad, to get him out of Scorpia, and they had "traded" him for the man and then "shot" him. Rothman found out about his treachery and had him and his wife killed.

The last chapter ends the story with a sniper on the roof a the building across from MI6 head quarters. As Alex walks out the front door, he is shot in the chest. It goes through a really long, intense explanation of dying. Alex stands for a while but falls, and before he closes his eyes, he hallucinates seeing his mother and father, whom he never met.

Since there are about three more books left, I have a feeling that Alex doesn't die. And what he thought were his parents were most like likely Mrs. Alex at the beginning, is nothing more than exhausted from being manipulated by MI6. After a while he becomes troubled when he joins Scorpia, and at the end he finally finds the truth about his father, and becomes at peace. I would recommend this to teens, and people who can get an adrenaline rush just from reading races against the clock. Apr 01, Marcia Campbell rated it it was amazing Shelves: Penguin Books, Recommended for grades Scorpia is an action packed adventure story from start to finish.

  • Scorpia (Alex Rider #5) by Anthony Horowitz (2 star ratings)!

The story begins with the criminal organization Scorpia whose modus operandi is Sabotage, Corruption, Intelligence and Assassination, conducting a meeting to inform its members of their next mission. Horowitz introduces the conflict very early when he has the beautiful Julia Rothman accompany Max Grendel, the now elderly grandfather who no longer has a heart to kill, especially children, to the gondola to bid him farewell as he retires from the organization. As she hands him an expensive Gucci briefcase, the reader knows that the kiss she gives Max, is the kiss of death.

The action in the story thereafter is swift and constant. We are hooked from the moment the scorpions tumble out of the briefcase to when Alex first spots the shiny scorpion on the boat in Venice. All throughout the story, the plot advances with non-stop action and intrigue. Some events are predictable, but nonetheless exciting.

I was amazed at how easy the book is to read and how fast I got through it. The book is dense, but a page turner. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Horowitz is a New York Times best seller. Sep 09, Brock Brunner rated it it was amazing. Personal Response I thought this book was fantastic.

It had everything that I enjoy: It was very hard to put down once you started getting into it. I was always on the edge of my seat until the last page. However in this book, Alex almost becomes the very thing he never thought he would ever be, an assassin. At the end of his last mission, a member of the organization known as Scorpia had told Alex before he died to go to Venice to find his density. Alex had no idea what this meant, but he went to Venice anyway. There he had no leads or clues on to what he was supposed to find, until one day he noticed a boat in the Grand Canal that had a large silver Scorpion embedded on the side.

Alex then realized that the scorpion was somehow connected to Scorpia, so he followed the boat. The boat led him to a large castle as it seemed.

There was to be a large masquerade party later that night, so Alex planned to sneak in. Alex managed to do so successfully, and crept around the castle to try and find out anything about Scorpia. He eventually stumbled into a room where two people were discussing some important stuff. He soon found himself in a large office where he presumed to look in the desk for anything. While snooping around, he was confronted by a man and then knocked out. When he awoke, he was in a dark cellar that he could tell was close to water.

Soon the place started to flood, and he had to swim down through the bottom of the cellar where the water was coming in order to escape, which Alex managed to do so. He soon found himself back with his friend Tom who came to Venice with him, and he needed Tom and his brother Jerry's help. He overheard something from those two people. A name of a lab just outside of Naples, that was his only lead. They all went to Naples and found the lab place and Alex ended up parachuting onto the roof. From there he crept around the lab again until he ran into a scientist, he was one of the two people talking at the party.

Suddenly, the man who had knocked out Alex before had showed up at the lab. His name was Nile, and Alex thought he was going to die, but Nile killed the scientist and then set a bomb to destroy the place, but he took Alex with him because he had not known who Alex was last time, it was as if his entire attitude towards Alex had changed. Alex was then taken to a fine hotel where he met and had dinner with Mrs.

Rotham, the other person in the room and one of the heads of Scorpia. There she showed him what Scorpia was and something else very saddening to Alex, a video of how Alex's father had died. Alex never knew his father, but it turned out that the people that killed him was MI6, the people he had been working for this whole time, it turned out they killed his father. His father had also worked for Scorpia and MI6 just killed him in cold blood. From then on Alex started training with Scorpia.

He was exceptionally good in many areas, except one: That was a problem because they needed Alex to be able to kill, so they sent him on a mission to kill the head of MI6, Mrs. She was the one who arranged for Alex's father to be killed, so it was a fitting assignment. He managed to get into Mrs. Jones apartment, it required a lot of hard work, and when he confronted her, he couldn't pull the trigger, and was caught by MI6.

He was taken back to HQ and asked what he knew about Scorpia, and Alex did so because he didn't want to work for Scorpia anymore, for MI6, or for anyone, he just wanted to go back school. Once they found out what they were truly up to, they needed to send Alex back to try and stop their "weapon" Invisible Sword that can kill anyone at anytime. MI6 was able to make a believable escape and returned to Scorpia. Once back with Scorpia, they took him to the base where they were housing Invisible Sword and told him how it worked, and that in a few hours thousands of people across England would die.

Alex knew he had to stop them, but how. Soon the SAS had found the base and ambushed it with a full out attack against Scorpia and they managed to kill or capture all of the Scorpia members, and Invisible Sword was successfully stopped. After a few days, he was called back to MI6 HQ and they told him everything, about how they didn't actually kill his father and it was all a cover, because Alex's father actually worked for MI6, not Scorpia, he was just undercover and did very well.

Alex felt happy and sad at the same time because it turned out his father wasn't a bad man, but Scorpia soon figured this out and actually had him and his wife killed while on a plane. As Alex left, there was a sniper atop a nearby building. Scorpia never forgave and never forgot, so they would make Alex pay for ruining their plans. As Alex left the building, he was shot.

As the EMT's gathered around trying to save him, he saw his mother and father, but they were fading, and Alex slowly closed his eyes. Characterization At the beginning of this book, Alex was recovering from his last mission with a vacation in Venice. Alex was mainly there to try and find out about Scorpia, so he was mostly curious at first, then he was captured by Scorpia and then was going to become an assassin and kill, so he was turning evil. Then at the end he ended up not wanting to be apart of Scorpia and helped MI6 one last time to stop Scorpia, so at the end he was good again.

Recommendation I recommend this book to anyone who has read any of the Alex Rider series before or likes a good action thriller. Blake Bury The answer is not so black and white, but if you put it in the perspective of the first four books, bad. See all 3 questions about Scorpia…. Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Horowitz starts the book off really well. He immediately introduces the conflict in the novel.

The antagonists are all in one room about to start a conference. Horowitz describes the meeting using a simile. This is the only thing that I liked, being able to picture everything extremely well. But there was a time where I disliked the description. While reading the novel I really thought I was able to predict what was going to occur next on a regular basis.

And sure enough it happened. He turned his head. A canal leading the other way. Another canal crossing it. A single motor cruiser sliding underneath a bridge. His ability to continuously find himself in near death experiences and somehow figure a very un-probable way out is to familiar and reoccurring in the novel. I especially disliked the time where Alex was trapped in the room which floods and somehow gets through the crevasses of the floor and escapes.

This was the time where I disliked the large amount of description. The reader knew Alex would get out of the situation, it was too early for him to be killed or something, yet it took like 10 pages for him to get out of it. Overall the book can be addicting but I really think that it is aimed at children rather than teens. View all 3 comments. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.
