When a puritan judge closes the show, Andrea Zaccardi has returned home from hunting. He and his wife Luisa are very close. Their young son Giulio develops a cough. The doctor recommends the seaside.

Luisa leaves with Giulio A police detective and his team attempt to solve two crimes committed within a day of each other in neighboring apartment rooms. A Sicilian nobleman is very jealous of his mistress and when she gets married flies off his handle and commits a murder of which an innocent man is accused. He is however tormented by his conscience. Great music, great acting, great directing, quick pacing, great camera work.

It's a perfect melodrama of the highest kind. It's about tensions between social classes, but ultimately, it is about more than that: It's not really about jealousy, but about the quest for transcendence of the mundane, a quest for the numinous.
The final scene is so moving, it is hard to hold back tears. It resembles Michaelangelo's Pieta, and only then do we realize that what we have been watching is not so much a high caliber drama, as an elegy for all those countless many who have been crucified on the cross of love.
