Interview with Michael Scott Miller, author of ‘Ladies and Gentlemen: The Redeemers’
As a free eBook, the novel received extremely positive feedback, which can be viewed here: Desperate for redemption, the perpetual dreamer decides to put together a band, recruiting musicians who have only one thing in common: The volatile mix of the musicians' personalities and backgrounds threatens to derail the band at every opportunity, but in time, the Redeemers begin to realize they have more to gain from one another than they ever could have imagined.
Thank you for allowing me to introduce myself and my work here at LibraryThing. I look forward to being part of this community and hearing from you. I wanted to look to my left and be surprised they weren't real people, right there beside me. To be honest, I have no idea how Miller could have pulled this off. He's got a huge cast of characters; this point of view was the most logical choice he could have made for telling this particular story. Anything else would have run the risk of turning the book into an absolute mess.
Still, I wanted more of the guys. They have great backstories. They have a great storyline. They probably have a great future, but let's not get ahead of the book here, folks. When I review a piece of rock and roll fiction, I always consider if the page breathes with music. In The Redeemers, it doesn't. It also doesn't need to. This is a book about the personalities behind the music. It's about this band named the Redeemers who are off looking for their own redemption, either personally or musically. These aren't necessarily people who live and breathe music.
On the other hand, they are people for whom music is an expression and, in some cases, a way of life. In other cases, it's a dream, something to stretch for and be terrified of. That is every bit as valid as having the music throb off the page. Overall, I liked this book. I'll tell people to read it. I may even hold it up there with some of my top reads although, truthfully, I don't think the good execution held up to the fantastic concept.
It was a hard goal to achieve. Miller did his best, and his best is quite good. I think Miller can and will bring us there in future books. I can't wait to follow him. May 28, PepperP0t rated it it was amazing Shelves: What an unexpectedly fabulous indie read. I have had this for almost two years and decided to read it as part of a challenge. It never should have sat unread on my shelf for so long.
It is a story about second chances. It is a story about perseverance. It is a story about following your dream. The synopsis is ba 4. I loved the characters, their voices were strong as each fully fleshed character was clearly defined and had a specific place within the band and within the story. The storyline for me was denser than first appeared but even on the surface it intricately wove around and through itself so that there were no loose ends and the result was a story you wanted more of.
I would highly recommend time with the Redeemers, Mr. Aug 17, LK Hunsaker rated it liked it. I'm a big music fan and so I naturally veer toward music stories, especially by indie authors. I enjoyed the concept of the Redeemers and Miller had some memorable characters that helped make the story fun.
It was a fast read, so not a big time investment. Unfortunately, the execution is lacking. It felt like the draft instead of a finished and polished story. It was 'told' not shown, with little depth, which made it feel rushed and with the idea that the concept was more important than the actu I'm a big music fan and so I naturally veer toward music stories, especially by indie authors. It was 'told' not shown, with little depth, which made it feel rushed and with the idea that the concept was more important than the actual writing of the story. One of the major story lines was about a 'snooty' college kid but it gave no background on why he held his attitude, letting the reader assume it was only due to his family's financial situation, while every other character was given an actual background and definition.
I found the whole thing hard to believe and conflicts too easily resolved, too coincidentally. The characters changed too easily and too fast. Again, a believability issue. On the other hand, I did enjoy the story of it and would love to see a rewrite in the form of a filled-in version, slowed down and more in depth with better character viewpoint. It is a great concept and I'm rating generously for that. Talented musicians, musical passion, friends, and their band.
Ladies and GentlemenThe Redeemers by Michael Scott Miller
You will receive a lesson in compassion and determination and realize that one's life can be turned around at any age. The dialogue among the characters makes up most of the book The characters are very interesting and very well described. The main character is trying to resurrect a band not only to return to the life he once had, but also to get gifted musicians together.

He and each character are believable. If Talented musicians, musical passion, friends, and their band. If you are a musician, you will thoroughly enjoy how the main character searched and searched for the perfect band members. If you are not a musician, you will appreciate the talent and passion music professionals have. I enjoyed the book for a peek into a subject area I have no background in.
Musicians are talented, unique individuals, and you will be able to see all these traits in the book. The book is heartwarming, and the "redeeming" ending fits perfectly with the title. Ladies and Gentlemen…The Redeemers is a fairly inspirational short read that just makes you feel good afterwards. The characters Miller put together in this novel felt like real people and has you realizing that one can do whatever they put their mind to no matter what others might be telling them.
You saw their imperfections and struggles. You saw them get through their issues and grow. You see them learn from each other and work together no matter how different their backgrounds are. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in need of inspiration and those who enjoy uplifting reads.

Enter Bert Ingram, who was basically kicked out of the industry years before and is determined to get back into his groove. After months of practice, they finally begin to get some gigs. But will they succeed? I really enjoyed this story by first-time nov Fun! I really enjoyed this story by first-time novelist Michael Scott Miller. It is a very pleasant read and one that is tough to put down. A delightful story and one you will definitely enjoy as well.

Unfortunately, it's now been a couple months and my memory for detail isn't what it was when I was younger one reason I try to write a review immediately when I finish a book. I do recall that I enjoyed this book and that it was an interesting story of redemption for people who have lost their way, for whatever reason, and the struggle to "make it" in the music business, which I don't know how I managed to miss adding this to my Goodreads list or review it at my blog when I was done reading it.
I do recall that I enjoyed this book and that it was an interesting story of redemption for people who have lost their way, for whatever reason, and the struggle to "make it" in the music business, which can be nasty even at its best. Jan 31, Amanda rated it liked it Shelves: I chose this one on a whim from my Kobo library. It was an okay book for not being my usual fare. The narrative is strong and the witing flows well. Though we're given glimpses of the characters and what they're like, we're not really immersed into the world of one character over the other.
Conflicts are quickly resolved, so there's not a wide range of emotions coming from this read. However, it does give some warm fuzzies in parts. Good for a light read on a rainy afternoon. Oct 10, Susan Wright rated it liked it. As a music lover especially blues the review of this book on Kindle Nation definitely caught my attention. I found the book very positive and uplifting, if not totally believeable after all it is fiction. The band came together and throughout their ups and downs came through for each other when it was important. I highly recommend the book for anyone who wants a good, quick, entertaining book that reminds you that people aren't always what they appear at first glance.
Oct 10, Joe Faust rated it it was ok Shelves: This readable indie novel about a down-and-out manager who assembles a band of others in need if a second chance suffers from the typical indie novel malady: In fact, the book is mostly show. However, the author does know how to push emotional buttons, though, and should produce interesting work as his writing improves.
Aug 18, vvb rated it it was amazing. The comraderie and passion for musical performance held my attention throughout this story. I loved watching the formation and growth of a music band. The interesting twist is that the band members are not all young hotties. Sep 16, P. Winn rated it really liked it. Bert Ingram is a misfit and as such it makes sense that the band he puts together are misfits too. This is a great contemporary story of life, the soul and friendship. Jul 31, Jeremy Potter rated it it was ok.

The premise is good, but the writing is average, the characters are two dimensional, and the way the story concludes is all too predictable. There were some good moments, but ultimately it's really not worth your time.
