A chopper medevac that's a race to save a Vietnamese girl's life, exploding flags that shoot down helicopters, a "Bilko" - like sergeant who smuggles bar girls into an American field hospital for the pleasure of wounded marines, a one eyed Quartermaster who talks like a pirate, an Australian soldier who's accidentally awarded the Purple Heart and a paranoid ball bearing clicking staff officer who thinks he's Napoleon re-incarnated, make up just some of the characters and events in this true story. Read how aerial recon and SAS patrols contributed to the targeting of B Strikes, and how one such strike almost went terribly wrong.

There's even a plot to kidnap a visiting Australian politician, strip him naked and leave him in a rice field out in the boondocks - such were the feelings towards politicians who were supposed to be caring for the soldiers' welfare. Ironically years later the same politician - by then a former Prime Minister of Australia - was found wandering in a trouser-less daze in a sleazy downtown Memphis hotel.

Was this Karma, or as he claimed, merely a prank by his political rivals? And if so, who stole his trousers? Drafted in , now more than forty years after he returned from the Vietnam War, the author reveals events during his tour of duty with the Australian Army. Told from the perspectives of others as well as his own, this is a sometimes tragic - often frustrating, but consistently humorous and cleverly crafted narrative about how it was for a group of young men who really didn't want to be there.

  8. The author recently commented in a radio interview: So I decided to write it how I saw it - not as others wanted. There has been too much sanitizing of the war, particularly by modern historians and politicians. Our own military leadership has become politically correct and now tolerates a system where our own troops are consistently placed under legal scrutiny by desk bound lawyers who've never heard a shot fired in anger. Many of these so called "leaders" have suggested that somehow "modern" warfare is different and there are few lessons to be learned from past conflicts.

Vietnam was an interesting period of my life - if you ever wanted to know what it's like to be involved in a war, flying unarmed aircraft at tree top level searching for the VC, and being shot at without being able to shoot back, then this is a must read.
