The Sixth Commandment (Part 1) - Catholic Morality And The Catechism - Catholic Series

I went home, brought a book to read, and finished it. So I browsed at the books in our bookshelves at home, saw mostly romance books, probably my mother's or my sister's. He read the book in December 20, That my father owned it plus the blurb about the book made me r Sometimes you look for a book to read. That my father owned it plus the blurb about the book made me read it. My first Lawrence Sanders novel. Reading the book was a travel back in time to the late 70s where there were telephone booths and typewriters, and mails have stamps and comes from the post office.

It was also a travel back in time when my father was alive, holding and reading the book in our front porch, and underlining a sentence: Disappointing I have been a fan of Mr. Sanders for a long time but that has ended with this book. Sanders wrote the book. I was thoroughly put off by the many witticisms and drinking. Seems like the entire book revolved around those 2 things. When he took Betty to bed, that was the final straw. I can understand a moderate amount of drinking but it was way too excessive.

More time was spent on either drinking o Disappointing I have been a fan of Mr. More time was spent on either drinking or being witty than on the story. I love mysteries and that might have been what he intended but he fell way too short. Per amanti del giallo. Good reading I liked the storyline and the way the author took you through it.

I was intrigued to find out more about what was happening and how the characters interacted. Aug 20, J. Sanders was a talented writer, but maybe a little to aware of that, I found myself skimming a bit, not a good sign. The story was intriguing but the foreshadowing was so heavy that suspense went out the window. May 26, David K. Still a very good read. Feb 21, Jeremy Daniels rated it really liked it. Keeps you on edge the whole way through. Jul 13, Eve Settles rated it it was ok. Sanders writes as if he believes himself to be very clever.

He could be better. This is an older book I pulled out of a stack on its way to donation purgatory. I don't recommend it.

Jul 15, Bill Weisensel rated it really liked it. Fun, no stress paperback suitable for hammocks or beach chairs. Jan 30, Jim Steele rated it it was ok. What do I call thee? Not a mystery obvious from mid-book. Not an adventure or a very slow one. Not modern lit though it uses a lot of big words. Maybe it would have moved faster if the protagonist could have he was always drunk. Maybe the book would be 50 pages shorter if he sobered up and looked at his situation no mystery then.

Almost a Bond wanna be that isn't.

Sam is an investigator with a huge foundation that gives money to scientists. He is sent to investigate Dr. Thorndecker to What do I call thee? Thorndecker to determine if his lab should receive a large grant. If all the investigators are as slow as he, it's a wonder the foundation has any money left. When he gets there, he finds a doctor involved in a mysterious series of experiments that seem to involve the residents of a nursing home which is attached to the lab. This book has a publication date. Sanders is no Jules Verne, but he knew what was then cutting edge science about gene splicing and cloning.

This knowledge didn't make it into the main themes of the book but he talked about them as though they were common knowledge which they were not at the time he wrote. I wish he had gone there in developing his story and I wish Sam could have been sober for a little while. It's interesting to read a book of this time to see where a lot of today's thrillers come from.

It isn't interesting enough to read this book, unless you're trapped on a very long sleepless flight with no decent movies to watch. Then it's passable but I'm not running out to buy the others in the series. Nov 19, Deb rated it liked it Shelves: Ok, so he's been writing for decades, but I just discovered him. Other than his "detective" characters are mostly alcoholics, or on their way to being so, he makes me laugh as they analyze the other characters and themselves.

Yes, sometimes they are a bit slow on figuring out what's going on, or I am exceedingly smart Mar 23, Jen rated it liked it. It it amazing to me that the whole book takes place in like 8 days.

This is the first by him I read, and it fits that description. It is OK if one does not expect much. It was a good story and overall well written except for the typos come on editors!

I giggled a little at some of the 70's lingo. I giggled a little bit more at some of the author's comments see reading status comment. The "love making" scene was awkward. This was the plea of the Nuremburg war criminals at the end of World War II and it was rightly rejected. Even a just war, therefore, does not justify every sort of violence.

As a soldier, and especially as an officer in command of hundreds of other soldiers, I often reminded myself that I was only order away from the ruin of my career. There are, I was sure, orders I was not willing to obey or enforce but which would result in my lawful arrest and even imprisonment. War is, by its very nature, anything but cut and dried, clean and neat.

The VietNam War was a classic example of this. Many Christians gladly served in that war, utterly convinced from a close vantage point that the war was not only just but was a righteous defense of the weak. Yet of all the many people I have known who served in that war there were none without great regrets, questions, and even qualms. Christians may find contentment in the performance of their duty, while using every opportunity to promote justice, truth, and even peace. Here, as in many thorny cases of ethics, we do well by returning to the great commandment: Given that framework for conduct, I never wanted to serve any cause, much less kill for any cause, unless it was not just technically "just" but "good" from that biblical standpoint.

Raw conquest, or even economic advantage, is surely not a cause worthly of taking or risking life. But, for me, it was always an honor to risk my life for the weak and poor and disenfranchized, for justice and love, and yes, for the pursuit of peace. It was for those things that I became a soldier and that my fathers before me took up the sword. It is argued by Christian pacifists that Jesus commands us to turn the other cheek and to love our enemies Mt.

As the Bible makes clear, that is not a motive to fail to defend others for whom you are entrusted. And yet we must not be too quick to brush such matters aside. A Christian must wage war without hatred, must fight without seeking evil upon his foe. Augustine, I think, summed up the motive of the Christian in war:. Peace ought to be your desire, war only your necessity… War is waged in orer to win peace.

Hence, even in warfare, be a peacemaker that you may by conquering your assailants, bring them over to the advantages of peace… Let is be necessity, not your desire, which slays the foe in fight. That is, for sure, a tall order, and one for which Christian soldiers should be ever in prayer. It has a melodramatic ending with effective contrasts and enough of the unexpected that convinces to compel attention and even interest. The photography is only so so.
