Please try again later. I studied under Masayuki Hisataka while I was stationed in Japan with the military. This is a very good book, I've also met his father who was the creator of this style.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I studied with hanshi myron lubitsh in nyc. The work thats being done with shorinjiryu is not like anthing i have seen anywhere. Not being at the hombu is bad but this book shows highlights and what karatedo is. There are so many different karate schools and texts on karate, a very popular oriental martial art, and so, it makes it difficult for the individual enthusiast to know what approach is best and which books to select.
But the problem is simplified when the question is asked: The logical answer is that a karate system ought to offer a scientific analysis of standard techniques and clear, well-founded explanations of all the basic karate rules. Scientific Karatedo, by Masayuki Kukan Hisataka, provides exactly this kind of treatment in detailed scientific explanations, unlike anything ever published before.
Furthermore, this book is more inclusive than other works on the subject. Including warm up exercises, basic techniques demonstrated in multi-photo sequences, prearranged forms, prearranged partner training, self defence, a special section on self defence for women, and it contains little known armed techniques. In general, karate is interpreted as a way of combat involving no weapons. However, in the early stages of it's development, karate called for the conversion of simple articles of daily use and certain agricultural tools into weapons for the peasantry to employ in protective combat.
The immense amount of material contained in this text, makes this book essential to all people who want to understand karate in it's entirety. This is an excellent book on this style of Japanese Karate. Lots of detailed photos. My martial arts training began in this style of Karate when I took classes with Master Hisataka when he taught classes in New York City many years ago in the 's.
An excellent teacher and an approach to martial arts that has stayed with me throughout my martial arts training. It would be welcomed if videos would produced to supplement the two books of Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate. Highly recommended for all students of the Japanese Martial Arts.
Written by my former teacher, So Shihan Masayuki Hisataka Hanshi, 9th Dan , this book is a brilliant text, and an indispensable aid for every practitioner of Shorinjiryu Karate, in particular, and any practitioner of the Okinawan martial traditions.

Although re-printed in , it is a difficult text to get hold of see the cost of second hand copies , so to see it launched on Kindle is brilliant. I will be recommending all my students to get a copy! Hanshi Masayuki Kukan Hisataka wrote this book originally in The book contains full description of historical aspects, physical principles, techniques, kata, kumite, and weapons.
It is a detailed work, with hundreds of pictures. I think it is one of, if not the, outstanding books on karate. It still takes pride of place in my collection. One of the finest books compiled on karate. Beginner through to advanced level. I highly recommend this book and the Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karate Do system. One person found this helpful.
