A goal out of this world or, rather, a world-class goal from a player determined to fulfil his potential as one of the very, very best. Eden Hazard produced a remarkable cameo, after coming on as a second-half substitute, and there is a new-found determination to him this season. Maybe it was going so close in the World Cup with Belgium, maybe it was not securing his move to Real Madrid, maybe it is the energising effect of a new and creative manager in Maurizio Sarri. Maybe, at 27, Hazard believes his time is now. It was going to take something special to stop them after seven straight wins and Hazard did just that as he ended their per cent start to the season ahead of both sides meeting this weekend in the Premier League.
H e arrived on the pitch to see Daniel Sturridge score his own brilliant goal, a wonderful scissor-kick, which appeared set to win Liverpool this tie after Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero had denied them with a series of saves.
And then Hazard turned it around. Turned it on its head.

He even delivered the free-kick from which Chelsea equalised, although there was controversy around that with Jurgen Klopp claiming it should have been disallowed. Three of them, in fact, Klopp said. Even so, after a long consultation with the video assistant referee VAR , referee Kevin Friend allowed the goal. S arri sent his assistant, Gianfranco Zola, the deliverer of many a fine goal himself in Chelsea blue, to speak.
Hazard certainly is and Chelsea provided proof that there is something special brewing under Sarri just as we know that is happening at Liverpool with Klopp who showed his frustration in upbraiding Xherdan Shaqiri at full time.
There is a great desire for Sarri to win a first trophy at Chelsea and he claimed a very big scalp. Yes, there were a raft of changes with four Liverpool players making their first start of the season and Chelsea also much altered, and although they settled more quickly — with the painfully out-of-sorts Morata missing two clear chances as he was thwarted by Mignolet — the best opportunities eventually fell to Liverpool.
Clear on goal, Sturridge rounded Caballero, who got a hand on the ball, but even so the striker had to do better than fire wide of the unguarded net. Chelsea made two more errors. Then Azpilicueta carelessly lost possession and it was fed to Keita who turned quickly and powered in a rising cross-shot that Caballero pushed up into the air. Sturridge met it and executed a wonderfully-acrobatic volley.
Liverpool F.C.
Liverpool were ahead but Chelsea responded with Emerson pulling them level. It stung the home side with Sturridge going close as he sent in a dipping shot from 25 yards, after being teed up by Firmino, only for it to strike the crossbar and bounce over. That, too, would have been some goal. It will have to be some game to beat that goal. L iverpool should have won that, but a set piece with VAR possibles and a magical goal from Eden Hazard gave Chelsea the win. Report and reaction coming up.

B all goes behind, Liverpool want a corner, but nothing doing - and that is the final whistle. M orata is booked for kicking the ball away. The five minutes are up C helsea, for the umpteenth time, give the ball away dangerously. Moses the guilty party on this occasion. Henderson has a gift opportunity to play a through ball, but misjudges it badly. Ball runs out harmlessly. F ive minutes added, not sure where Kevin Fwend got that from.
Victor Moses is booked for running his mouth, presumably about the timekeeping? B ut the more pressing matter for Liverpool is another run from Hazard, so dangerous and twisty, like an eel with a shotgun. Henderson, stout British yeoman, plays the fallguy: L iverpool play their ace of their own, and on comes Mo Salah. Has he got time to produce a moment of class of his own? O h, the game was waiting for one of the true stars to make a contribution, and it is Eden Hazard who has produced a moment of pure quality.
Picks it up centrally, 30 yards out. Runs at the defence. Finds the way blocked, so moves it out to the right, then goes and gets it again.
Now he drives powerfully, quickly, electric through the Liverpool defence and lashes home a sensational shot. X eqiri at it again, finds Sturridge, who sees the keeper off his line and tries to whip the ball over him. L iverpool might feel a little hard done by there, but I suppose the benefit of the doubt should go to the batsman and all that. Hard to say that was definitely offside. I think it's a fair enough goal. C helsea are back in it! A set piece has undone Liverpool.
They hold that high line, but it has not paid off on this occasion. Hazard delivers the ball, Barkley thumps a header at goal. Mignolet parries gamely but it is right into the path of Emerson, who taps in from point blank. X eqiri gets in behind, but then slips just at the crucial moment. S adio Mane, involved in most of Liverpool's good work, gets to the byline and very nearly delivers a handy cross.
Just ran out of play. And that will be Sadio's last involvement of the evening, he's coming off in favour of Roberto Firmino. Meanwhile, Watford are beating Spurs. Brentford have got one back against Arsenal, Come on the Bees and indeed the Hornets. J ordan Henderson replaces James Milner. Xherdan Shaqiri with an exciting slalom run and a disappointing shot, something of a theme for that player.

Keita has walloped a shot from 15 yards. Caballero does pretty well to parry it, but the ball floats out to the unattended Sturridge. He makes an acrobatic connection, and all he has to do is hit the target. S oon be time for both of these managers to bring on the real players. I'd forgot he was playing. Kevin Friend hasn't, though: A lberto Moreno with some excellent work down the flank, stands the ball up, but it's cleared Chelsea keeper got a touch.
Liverpool not far off with the corner as well! T alking of Jigsaw strikers, here is Morata. A lovely ball to him from Willian, but ole Morata donkeys it up as per. Heads the ball over the bar from no distance. You would not have bet on him at to finish.
Quite often when I watch Chelsea I come away thinking "that Willian guy deserves better" and this is no exception. T errible star from Chelsea! He has to score! A rsenal and West Ham both leading their lower league opponents with something to spare. Forest up on Stoke.
