Be the first to ask a question about Madness of the Manitou. In The Sphinx , the superficial and selfish nature of the main character practically had me rooting for him to get eaten! But these are minor, isolated quirks. His blend of modern brutality and supernatural folklore gives effective frights and is horrifically beautiful. Second-rate fortune teller Harry Erskine gets involved in the case of a seeming cancer patient, Karen Tandy, who has a strange growth on her neck which moves.

See a Problem?

Doctors are helpless to remove it, because it is actually the reincarnated form of a powerful and angry Native American shaman, Misquamacus, who is quite good at defending himself. Harry seeks the help of a modern shaman, and a battle of wits and magic is waged. This is the weakest Masterton novel I read. An up-and-coming American diplomat meets a beautiful woman at a party, and quickly gets involved with her despite her obvious reservations.

She has a dark secret, however, and a connection to an ancient Egyptian god…. The Devils of D-Day Despite what I consider to be an oddly-motivated main character, this short novel is fast-paced and carries a lot of horror kick. An American cartographer, traveling through France, comes across an American tank which has been broken down and sealed shut since the D-Day invasion.

This tank was part of a mysterious and little-spoken-of regiment of 13 tanks that decimated the Nazi lines. Now it exudes a subtle and malevolent influence upon the surrounding community, and the cartographer decides to investigate its contents. What follows is a rapidly-expanding nightmare of demons and murder, and a dark secret of the Allied forces. Tengu is a powerful, shocking and unforgiving novel of awesome terror. A seemingly random and exceedingly brutal murder in California slowly brings together a disparate cast of characters.

Individually and together, they uncover a plot by a cult to exact revenge upon the United States using the brutal Tengu, a Japanese demon. Salem resident John Trenton has recently lost his wife Jane and unborn child. Driven nearly to madness, John begins to investigate the cause of the haunting, and is eventually led to the sunken remains of a year old sailing ship, the David Dark , and its deadly prisoner — a prisoner which is almost free. Harry Erskine, still working as a fortune teller, is drawn yet again into supernatural events beyond his control.

Madness of the Manitou: Tales from Within

People are being murdered around the country, and the only suspect is a misshapen, sourceless shadow. Soon entire cities are collapsing into nothingness, and Harry must face a plot to eradicate the invading white man from the Americas — this time without help from any modern medicine man. Burial is a novel of apocalyptic horror, and features an unholy alliance between the evil spirits of two cultures.

This lean novella tells the story of domestic crime scene cleaner Bonnie Winter. Los Angeles has been suffering under an excess of brutal murders, and when Bonnie uncovers a rare South American caterpillar at each crime scene, she begins to suspect some darker force at work. Trauma is an unconventional Masterton story. It is at times intentionally mundane, describing the bleak and joyless life Bonnie leads.

It is also much more subtle: The Devil in Gray Several seemingly unrelated people are brutally sliced up by an invisible assailant. Investigating police detective Decker ignores any supernatural possibilities at first, but his recurring nightmares tell him that something otherwordly is happening — and he is intimately involved.

Hobo Magic - The World Today (2017) (New Full Album)

A poor woodcutter lived in a dingy shack on the South Manitou. A rich Chicagoan hired this woodcutter to do some carpentry work around his summer cabin. The devastated woodcutter decided to prove himself by building a house for his desired bride. He planned every detail with the daughter in mind. The rich Chicagoan was so impressed that he allowed the woodcutter to marry his daughter, who was also infatuated with her new home. The couple lived blissfully for a couple months, until the wife suddenly sickened and died.

Madness of the Manitou: Tales from Within by Caleb Musgrave

She watched him, lay her hands on his shoulders, and moved things around. Unable to bear these heartbreaking reminders of his loss, he moved back to his dingy shack. No living humans had the energy to maintain a house so jealously guarded by the spirit world. On an island with many historical buildings tenderly kept in good condition, only the foundation of this home remains. Perhaps the spookiest buildings on the Manitou Islands are the ones most heavily inhabited today: The South Manitou light had many incarnations between its first glow in and its closure, when the National Park moved its rangers onto the islands.

Voices and footsteps of long-dead keepers echo up and down the lighthouse tower. In the lifesaving stations, phantom crews still practice their lifesaving drills, ever ready for the next steamship tragedy. Another resident of the old lifesaving building had a recliner that she closed up religiously every night. But often in the mornings, the chair would be open again.

Yet he had a history of seeing ghosts around the island and insisted the house he stayed in was haunted.

Did he ever introduce himself to the apparitions? Over time he slept little and grew distraught over the constant ghostly companionship. The last straw was when he woke up to find phantom children jumping on his bed and laughing. Are they unable to relinquish their ingrained sense of responsibility for the vessels on the Manitou Passage? Few were sorry when new radar technology made the light obsolete.

Could a light have warned her away in time? Less lucky were the souls aboard the steamer Walter L. Frost , almost 60 years earlier. When the Morazan ground to her final stop, she was nearly on top of the remains of the Frost. Although the Morazan is decaying into an intriguing snorkel spot for vacationers, caution is warranted: The ranger station receives regular calls for help from panicked campers saying a boy with orange swim trunks is drowning out by the ship.

When the park authorities send out a boat to investigate, they see nothing. Gulls congregate and nest on the Morazan by the hundreds. Superstitious sailors say seagulls are the souls of the drowned.
