The Wonder of Water
Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Jun 02, Ross Warren rated it really liked it. This mini-collection from the pen of mighty Stu Young is full of wit and imagination but also sincere insight and emotion.
It's about as much fun as it's possible to have reading without added narcotics. Opening story 'Heartache' sets the tone with it's tale of a far-future assassin gaining revenge with weapons that are distinctly battery operated.
For all it's surface invention it's rooted firmly in the emotive side of character. A sublime opener to the collection. A fun story but doesn't linger in the mind in quite the same way. Title story 'Reflections In the Mind's Eye' is a well realised addition to the trope of stories of things and places just outside of the narrator's field of vision.

It's well-written and holds the attention but isn't the most original tale here. Having sad that it is still an enthralling tale and probably deserves to be expanded to a greater length. Young saves the best to last with 'Vanishings', a story that stands out all the more for its contrast to the wild, outrageous stories that precede it.
The story of how a couple deal with the loss of their child is rooted in the reality of present day and is a showcase of nuanced observation. When the more fantastical elements appear they only add to the profound sense of heartache and devastation the story has created.
