Twelve-year-old Bert Middleton is torn between his bullying father John, who wants him to help out on the family farm, and his teacher Gerard Eyre, who wants him to stay in school. His older brother Joe earns extra money as a gardener at the Allingham estate. The first bus arrives in the village bringing the minister's daughter, Martha Lane, whose progressive views conflict with the traditional ways of the villagers.

When World War I begins, Joe joins up with the encouragement of his mother Grace, who wants him to escape the confines of the village. Joe sleeps with the Allinghams' troubled daughter Caro before he ships out. When his crop fails, John Middleton gets drunk and wanders onto the Allingham estate, where he is seen chasing a disturbed Caro Allingham in her night dress. Caro is discovered to be five months pregnant, and although she confides in her brother George that Joe Middleton is the father, her older brother Edmund calls in Detective Bairstow to investigate.

John Middleton is under suspicion because in the past he impregnated his wife's sister, who committed suicide. An angry mob descends on the Middleton farm, led by another farmer, Rutter, who wants the land for himself. John tries to hang himself but is rescued by Bert and Grace. Grace Middleton and other local women go to work at a new boot factory opened by Arnold Hankin. Joe Middleton comes home on leave, bringing news of the death of his friend, Paul Boden. Joe learns that Caro had his baby, but the Allinghams have given the child up for adoption without her consent.

Gerard Eyre is brought before a tribunal as a conscientious objector. Bert tries to help his teacher, but Eyre is taken away, leaving Bert his camera. Martha Lane tries to organise the women workers at the boot factory, with Grace's help. Caro Allingham's mental health declines, and a sadistic doctor subjects her to a regime that includes force feeding. When her brother George tries to intervene, Dr Wylie suggests he be sent off to war. The Middletons' baby daughter Mary becomes seriously ill with scarlet fever.

John steals a small amount of animal medicine from the Allingham estate farm, but that same night one of the Allinghams' cows is mutilated. John is arrested, but the truth is revealed when Lord Allingham — who was disfigured in the Zulu War — kills the rest of the cows and then kills himself. Grace meets with a union representative about working conditions at the factory, not realising that his aim is to send the women back to their homes when the men return from war. Joe Middleton comes home on leave after the Battle of the Somme and tries to conceal his shell shock from his family, but Grace knows something is wrong.

Dasha Skrabtsova, Anahit Ohanyan. For those who just want a good scare, rest assured the best and worst of it comes across as Wait Until Dark meets The Blair Witch Project. Shyamalan, far from being a master of suspense, hasn't yet figured out that the shadowy things you glimpse out of the corner of your eye are always scarier than those you're allowed to gaze upon directly.

Another mediocre lunacy from the overrated M. So meaningless and distanced in its details that it hardly stands a chance of wooing even the most willing fellow traveler.

It succeeds more often than it fails, and it proves once and for all that M. Night Shyamalan is nobody's one-trick pony.

The Village ( film) - Wikipedia

This director is a young dog who needs some new tricks. The Village is a truly special film, one that is largely misunderstood by the masses. Frankly, if you believe this twaddle, you'll believe anything, and if you believe anything, you don't need to go to the films -- you can just sit at home and fantasise for free. The Village reminded me not so much of Hitchock but Scooby Doo. When at the end of that cartoon it was revealed that glowing skull creature was actually Old Mr. Higgins the caretaker, it pissed me off even as a little kid.

A mystery-driven allegory that will disappoint those expecting the frightening movie the trailer wants to sell, but those more open-minded may find an interesting film with an evocative cinematography, even if the main twist two, in fact doesn't carry the same impact as Shyamalan's previous films. I remember being really excited for this film when the trailers were first released, and excited to finally watch it in theaters. Except when that time finally came, I was extremely let down particularly with the ending.

It showed alot of promise in the beginning, but failed to capitalize on it. Shyamalan's The Village started off with a very good premise. The film was scary, and disturbing, and kept you on the edge of your seat until the twist ending. The Village could have been something terrific, but instead it ends up being a dud. This horror suspense film isn't what it advertises it to be. The film would have been fine just the way it, if it wasn't for the ending.

Movies in Theaters

For what is, the first hour was very entertaining, but like I said, the ending ruined the entire film. I felt that Shyamalan had another terrific film under his belt, but alas; it was not to be. The Village ends up being predictable, and near the end you realize what the ending might actually be.

Other than the film was well acted, but because of the Shymalan tendency to ruining his films with a twist, the talent involved doesn't save the film from mediocrity. There were some good things about the film, but once everything becomes obvious to the viewer and it does you just end up not caring for the film anymore. What was great about Signs was that it had an effective mix of suspense, mystery, thrills and horror to create the tension on screen. Plus the ending wasn't bad whatsoever, and nothing is really explained, not to the fullest at least.

But with The Village, everything is explained and it ruins the entire tone of the film. Go in with low expectations so that you're not too disappointed as I was.

Wrabel - The Village

The Village is a mediocre thriller horror film that doesn't deliver the goods. Night Shyamalan's thriller excellent for the first two-thirds of it. The characters are interesting, the acting all-round is superb, especially from Bryce Dallas Howard. Shyamalan creates numerous moments of tension and suspense and the eery atmosphere really works.

The Village

Not to mention James Newton Howard's score is incredible and one of my all-time favourites now. I don't hate the twist as much as others, but it just left me cold. I don't think it is the twist us the audience deserves. Who knows, the twist might make sense, but I think Shyamalan couldn't provided a much more interesting and thought-provoking climax.
