These revolutions act as avalanches, as tremendous forces that sweep aside the old, clear the way for the new, and leave interesting and important pieces behind. The business of telephone service is an excellent example.

The various pieces of phone service are no longer aggregated into one solid mass—they are disaggregated into separate entities. The pieces are no longer bound together with the social glue. The first advances came in long-distance service: And look at the different styles of telephones! Local telephone companies still routed calls through the long-distance network; telephones that people purchased and installed in their own homes still were able to get dial tone from the local telephone companies. Successful disaggregations in technology, and the business of technology, repeat this pattern over and again: Would you like to tell us about a lower price?
If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support? The Pebble and the Avalanche shows how the Internet, the auto industry, music downloading, and other rapidly evolving industries are all connected by the same dynamic -- disaggregation. Moshe Yudkowsky shows why this dynamic is crucial to survival in the 21st century marketplace, and how you can use it to bring about change in your industry.

But there are more subtle examples. Separating information from the storage medium -- digital music doesn't rely on records, tapes, or CDs; digital photographs don't require paper; and digital movies don't need film -- has enabled millions of people to create and share their work and others' far more easily than ever before, with enormous implications. Think of this process as an avalanche: Pry some of these rocks loose and you will unleash a tremendous outpouring of energy that sweeps everything from its path.
The same thing happens in technology: Yudkowsky details exactly how disaggregation works, describing five different ways of taking things apart, and the many ways it can be used to generate new innovations. The Pebble and the Avalanche provides strategies for successfully adapting to a disaggregation revolution, and points towards the future, identifying several industries that are about to be completely transformed by disaggregation. I thought that without an engineering or business background that I might not "get" this book. Yudkowsky writes as a master teacher. He reviews concepts and outlines chapters to make this most intelligible and provides clear, entertaining examples. As a family systems therapist, I found it a brilliant treatment of systems, the ultimate metaphor for what happens to all of us as we grow up and move on in life. That complex organism we call the family naturally disaggregates and evolves as children leave home, evolve, raise children, and inevitably modify the culture of the family of origin, or "parent company".
This should be required reading for all sociologists and mental health professionals, and obviously for anyone who intends to go corporate in the business world. This is a really wonderful read. Furthermore, in just a few days I've already come up with dozens of possible applications to my own interests and work, and I'm currently using the ideas in the book to sort through how I can apply these ideas.

The Pebble and the Avalanche: How Taking Things Apart Creates Revolutions by Moshe Yudkowsky
Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Yudkowky's thesis is that all great revolutions which start with a pebble and end with an avalanche, hence the title disaggregate something. By taking it to pieces and recombining the pieces, we get new business opportunities, greater competition, more creativity, etc. It's a tempting idea, but I fear he's too loose with his terms. He uses "disaggregation" in situations where it's not warranted, and the categories of disaggregation are so loose as to be almost meaningless.
My big takeaway Yudkowky's thesis is that all great revolutions which start with a pebble and end with an avalanche, hence the title disaggregate something. My big takeaway was to look at the components of a system and see how it's possible to break up or regroup components whether ingredients, processes, people, ownership, etc. Chloe rated it really liked it Dec 30, Shimon rated it liked it Jan 18, John rated it really liked it Mar 10, Elanor rated it it was amazing Jan 17, Mladen rated it liked it Mar 27, Jennifer rated it liked it Nov 27, Think of this process as an avalanche: Pry some of these rocks loose and you will unleash a tremendous outpouring of energy that sweeps everything from its path.
