He was a bigger force in the first book, not so big in the second, and this was kind of a middle ground.
I love me some David, though, so that was moderately disappointing until I got too wrapped up in the story to be worried about him. Lewis and Jonathan were more prominent than previously, which I liked.
Weather Warden
Overall, I think that Chill Factor is stronger than the second book, but Ill Wind will eternally hold my heart. You can't beat the first Weather Warden book, which is completely devoid of First Book Syndrome, and one of the most amazing books ever. If you're in the mood for a movie-like Urban Fantasy with a hint of romance, this is your series! Via The Obsessive Bookseller at www. People with abilities to control the weather with the help of mysterious, beautiful, and downright hostile djinn that are kept as slaves. It is a really neat idea, and for the most part Caine does a great job expanding on it.
My only gripe here is that she sometimes managed to turn a fun ability into a highly technical event that made me feel like I was reading a textbook. I actually really like the writing style — I am a sucker for good use of description and Caine had a couple of really stunning passages that I made note of to study for my own writing. What she accomplishes so well with that great description is a fantastic overall mood for the story. It takes me to a very distinct world with a very distinct feeling, and honestly if I pick the next book up it will be because I miss the overall feel of these novels.
For any wary readers out there, this particular book contains language and violence. Sep 16, Heidi Stewart rated it did not like it. This is where I end what from the first book I had been sure would be a fantastic series. Alas, the plot holes and poor characterization that I had been warned would grow numerous as the series continued have reared their ugly head. Joanne faked her death in the last book, and at the beginning of this one she decides she's going to her funeral to watch everyone cry. She's not even going to disguise herself, just walk in and shock everyone because it will be fun.
Never mind it will completely und This is where I end what from the first book I had been sure would be a fantastic series. Never mind it will completely undermine the whole point of faking her death. And then David, who's a freaking genie and could magic her to the bed or something so she couldn't leave decides he's going to go with her because "I can't stop you. And then, while they are there someone comes up to them and tells them it's very important that he talk with them, and then the chapter ends. You'd think the next chapter would be them talking, but no it's them meeting him DAYS later huh?

I might have been able to overlook these plot holes and glaring character stupidity for a few more books, but the way the men in Joanne's life treat her with such disregard and she acts like it's of no consequence It's the only way to get her passed this magical barrier where she will be revived on the other side.
But he doesn't explain any of this to Joanne. He just has her kidnapped and killed. And then David impregnates her, also not explaining his plan or even asking for her consent. The men's logic is Joanne is rash and impulsive and she wouldn't agree to their ideas. So they simply ask her to trust them when it's perfectly clear they don't trust her.
I'd expect Joanne to be pissed. These men have USED her and completely disregarded her own thoughts and feelings on the issue. She should curse them out. But no, it's like she's completely oblivious to the extreme trespass on her body that has occurred by both of them. It's like it never crossed her mind any act of betrayal by the men she loves and who profess to love her has even happened. This is not acceptable. This is not how people who love you and respect you act.
These are not healthy relationships. These men have acted like complete asses and Joanne just let's them walk all over her like their actions were right. This is wrong and disgusting and abhorrent. I draw the line here. Aug 06, Kt rated it it was amazing.
Poor Joanne has really had a rough couple of weeks. She started on the run from murder charges, died, was reborn as a djinn, died again, and came back as a human. This book starts with Joanne and David trying to reach Las Vegas to stop the teenager, Kevin, who stole powers and enslaved the leader of the Djinn, Jonathan. Unfortunately they have not been able to make any progress as Kevin, via Jonathan always finds them before they get even close. Joanne finds herself stuck in the middle of a secr Poor Joanne has really had a rough couple of weeks. Joanne finds herself stuck in the middle of a secret society and quickly learns she cannot trust anyone because even her friend seem to have no issue with using her as a pawn.
I've come to realize that I really should just expect the unexpected in this series. I cannot count how many times I thought "Woah, didn't see that one coming. At one point, Jonathan, who seems to have it out for her, even says "You really know how to survive, I'll give you that. Yes, she does have a major weakness for cars and shopping, which she does at really odd moments, but in the end she makes sure to fight for what is right even if it means not taking the easy way out.
I'm starting to worry a little about Joanne and David's future. They just haven't been able to have any real time together, something always seems to tear them apart. I hope things do not fizzle between them. I love their chemistry and a lot of what I love of this series is the dynamic between the two. Hopefully they will at least get a little time together if not some peace in future books. However, with the way things ended in this book, it makes their future seem even more shaky. This book was just as suspenseful as the first two. I love how the author integrates things from Joanne's past and makes them relevant to things happening now.
Considering how she is always out to save the world, it was nice to see that she might actually be an important part of the puzzle, versus just a girl with a hero complex. This book is a great read, but beware that you will want to have the next book ready as the ending of this one will make you want to jump right into the following one. Jun 14, Nikki rated it it was ok Shelves: While this installment had more humor and entertainment in it than the second, it still managed to greatly annoy me. Joanne continues to be slightly slow and all too trusting.
Her lack of realization at times made me want to scream at the book in frustration. Her mentions of clothes and cars is also starting to be very annoying and I wish Caine would have done a 2. Her mentions of clothes and cars is also starting to be very annoying and I wish Caine would have done away with such things. Joanne or should I say Caine also had a way of describing surroundings which make me want to skim until there is dialogue.
In this installment Joanne also seems to have a holier than thou complex when it comes to killing Kevin. Sure, it would kill Lewis as well but her main driving force seems to be the killing overall. One life to save the planet and she is not willing to consent? Then near the end of the book a life would be required to save David and she pretty much says that is perfectly acceptable?? And this is how she feels about saving David, despite comments about not being sure she could control herself sleeping in a bed with Lewis. So faithful and consistent! And as authors seem to love to do in series, the main character is now pregnant!
It always becomes a plot twist! It is such a cop-out, in this series as well. I'm definitely not happy with this plot development and hope that it is somehow a false positive which I doubt it is or the remaining books in the series may become entirely too unbearable for me. Not only will we have to then hear about the pregnancy constantly, then the having of the kid and so on, we'll probably have to read about what the damn kid is wearing too.
Oh and we'll have to read Joanne whining that she has to drive slow or some crap like that. I guess I'll give the series one more chance but if that fails too I may be selling the series as I have collected them all. Book 3 in the Weather Warden Series, this is the first one I've read of the series having picked the book up because I've read some of The Morganville Vampire series by Rachel.

Fitting into the NA market it does feature strong language. Joanne Baldwin is a weather warden who looks after weather and tries to control freak weather patterns. Kevin is a sixteen year old kid who is full of anger and holed up in Las Vegas with a very powerful Djinn. Joanne finds herself being used as bait to flush him out in a battle on many levels. She is kidnapped by a new group who call themselves Ma'at, keepers of balance, but in the end she must use her past experiences to help battle the present. I'm glad the book explained what had happened so far in the series at the start, it helped me get a feel for the setting.
The book grew on me and once I'd got into a bit further I began to enjoy it. Jun 01, Maria V. Snyder rated it really liked it. I took this along on my recent trip to Europe. This is the third book in Rachel's Weather Warden series - I started the first book, Ill Wind ready to tear it apart like the laughable yet entertaining movie Twister - I have a degree in meteorology so how could a mere author know enough about the science of the weather? She nailed i I took this along on my recent trip to Europe. In this installment, the poor main character gets quite battered trying to get to a young man who has stolen powers and a dinjin that doesn't belong to him.
I was hooked and spent one very late night finishing this book. View all 3 comments. May 25, Gillian Murrell rated it really liked it. This is the 3rd book in the series and Rachel Caine did a great job keeping me guessing as to what was going to go wrong next. Poor Joanne has such a horrific time trying to do the right thing while keeping Kevin alive through out the whole book. Lots of twists and turns, its also a good idea to jot down some notes on what you can and can not command a djinn to do if you ever manage to get your hands on one in a bottle ;.
Feb 24, Shanon rated it it was amazing Shelves: The twists and turns, the way the "villan" changes is so much fun! I can't wait to find out what troubles Joanne gets into in the next book. A really good follow on to the second story - with an exciting twist! This book picks up three days after Kevin absconds to Las Vegas with Jonathan. David and Joanne are now trying to break through to Kevin.
How did view spoiler [Rahel get resurrected if it's only a human death and power from Jonathan and David, why aren't there more djinn? How does Joanne survive death again her heart was stopped? We also learn that Orrey attempted to drown her at one point - she got away by recycling This book picks up three days after Kevin absconds to Las Vegas with Jonathan. We also learn that Orrey attempted to drown her at one point - she got away by recycling the oxygen.
I understand the concept of knowledge hygiene, but it's at the point where no one is trusting each other with information - even David and Joanne, where view spoiler [David gets Joanne pregnant without her knowing. This is not even going into what is going on with Lewis - why is he playing his cards that close to the chest?! It doesn't make sense. Just go with the action - of which there is a lot of. Also, I love the references to fashion. Joanne Baldwin is a weather warden. Weather wardens protect the innocent masses that's us from nasty weather -- and the big secret is that nasty weather would probably have killed us all if it weren't for their protection.
Mother nature is not so kind, after all. The Weather Warden Series is fun and addictive, but I was a little less happy with Chill Factor than with its two predecessors. Joanne is a strong woman in body and spirit. She has a realistic sense of her own limitations -- and she t Joanne Baldwin is a weather warden. She has a realistic sense of her own limitations -- and she then pushes past those limits, fighting for what she believes.
She's not always right and her priorities aren't always where they necessarily should be: But that's part of the fun. We're not looking at an omniscient narrator here, by any means, or a super-brainy untangler of all things mysterious. But she's fun to root for, and her weather-controlling powers are very cool and compellingly described. And if I were a woman with a lot of money and the desire to accessorize, she'd be my go-to shopping companion for sure. Chill Factor kept me turning the virtual pages on my iPhone, and it makes me want to read the next book in the series.
And yet, certain things about the book left me disgruntled. It felt a little bit rough around the edges, as if this shouldn't have been quite the final draft. The example that sticks in my mind is in the description of an intense windstorm. In the windstorm, things get shredded.
This gets shredded, that gets shredded, Joanne is worried about getting shredded. It was odd to see the same word used so many times in a few pages -- and distracting. Not just wording, but the mechanics of the storytelling sometimes seemed sticky. Joanne gets beaten over the head a few too many times in this book. The world goes blurry. I understand that she's enduring much physical abuse here, but how many head injuries is poor Joanne going to sustain?
Getting knocked unconscious was used too many times as a device to render her or other characters helpless so that they could be moved around or captured. And that brings me to the final point I want to make about Chill Factor: I felt a strength in Joanne in the first two books that was somehow missing in this one. Here, she's constantly being pushed around by circumstance and by powerful beings or strong people with weapons. She fights back, but circumstance and the other characters are moving her the entire time, when she should be driving the story at least some of the time, if that makes any sense.
I've spent so much time criticizing this book so I should end by reiterating that I still liked it, and I still recommend the Weather Warden series to anyone who likes contemporary, action packed tales with a nice paranormal twist. Feb 13, T. Day rated it liked it. I sincerely had mixed feelings about this one. So I'll start with the good. So happy to see the return of the flashbacks. I kind of missed them in the last one but I knew that the author was probably trying to make it seem like Jo was in a djinn life now, not her human so memories weren't as important to the story line.
Even if it was only one memory, it's still nice to hear more about Joanne and her never-failing-to-excite-and-endanger adventures. Sometimes by book three th I sincerely had mixed feelings about this one. Sometimes by book three the character changes. But Joanne's still badass, full of attitude, all that jazz. David's still the sweet one. Lewis is still stubborn and slightly immune to the charms of women. Kevin's still an asshole kind of kid. Damn I love that sistah. Probably be nice to know more about Marion and Lewis and the rest of the Wardens.
From the summary of the next book, it'll be good to know more about Joanne's family as well. Oh, the drama I am certain will ensue. Especially with David's new problem. Finally figured out what aetheric is. But not from this series.

From a tarot book I happened to be reading. Wish I would have caught that sooner because I would have understand a lot more. What I'm not clear on is is there a difference between Oversight and aetheric? Sometimes I can't tell what she's referring to when she uses them and when they are used they seem interchangeable.
Here's the real thing I just don't get. Some scenes just don't FLOW. How Joanne "died" to get through the barrier was a confusing mix of a scene that I had to reread several times to understand. Then things still aren't explained until later and by then I'd been caught up in other things. And now "Imara" - how she went from being concerned about drinking while being pregnant to drinking a beer with Johnathan. Did she decide the djinn part of her child could handle it all of a sudden?
It seems like she was tossed around quite a bit for being pregnant too. I know early on in pregnancy it's pretty easy to disturb something like that. But I guess having a djinn child is different? I didn't quite get that to be honest. And near the end was Jonathan the one to create the floods? I was confused about that. There were quite a few parts that I just struggled to really understand. The ending wasn't so rushed. And I like that Orry got his ass handed to him. I love the building relationship between Joanne and David and the spark of new love between Rahel and Lewis never saw that coming; I was really hoping they'd have sex in that scene!
And of course, the new rule of balancing is nice touch. So, onto the fourth one. May 27, Angie rated it liked it Shelves: This third installment in the Weather Warden series sees our girl Jo burning rubber to stop that little twit Kevin from taking over the world. Now that he's nigh unto invincible thanks to a heady cocktail of Jonathan and Lewis' powers , he's made his new home a penthouse suite at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Jo has a very unpleasant history with Sin City, and it comes back to haunt her in a Big Way as she desperately tries to locate Kevin and persuade him to see the lig Vegas, baby.
Unfortunately, Jo has a very unpleasant history with Sin City, and it comes back to haunt her in a Big Way as she desperately tries to locate Kevin and persuade him to see the light. Chill Factor has a bit of the transitional novel feel to it as a new organization comparable but sort of diametrically opposed to the Wardens is introduced, exponentially complicating Joanne's life. Once again, every character except Jo seems to have layer upon layer of hidden motives. In some cases, such as Marian Bearheart's these motives made me want to cheer.
In others, such as Lewis' I felt a twist of pain in my gut and, even though he had a quasi-valid explanation, it still felt like betrayal and I didn't like it one bit. But I really did like the book and it certainly provided plenty of fodder for the coming books. Though this isn't the kind of book you'd want to, say, finish after all the bookstores have closed and not have the sequel waiting safely on your nightstand.
I don't know what went wrong with the reading of this book. Probably i'm just not in the proper mood to read this story. Although yes, i am getting a little tired of the constant sacrifice of one of the characters. In this book Joanne's life continues chaotic as ever. Her need to do the right thing, makes it hard for her to stay away from troubles. Something, that she probably will never be able to do in her life In this story, Joanne deals with some very traumatizing memorie I don't know what went wrong with the reading of this book.
In this story, Joanne deals with some very traumatizing memories from her past. Then she will have to decide where her loyalties lie. Because her life is about to get a whole lot messier. But as they say, darkness and light walk hand in hand, so if heartbreak looms at the distance, a shining star is already in her near future talking about euphemisms, lol. I'm not going to give any spoilers. I will just say, that like Joanne, i was also caught by surprise. Also i was completely dumbfounded by Rahel and Lewis Although i am very curious to know what is going to happen to David, i will probably take a little break from this series, until i am once again in the right mood to appreciate it.
This one was a little hard to take, Joanne is used by everyone in this one and only Dijinn turn infrit Rahel seems to really do her any favors. Even Jonathan, who hates her, does more for Jo than any of her "friends". I almost stop reading it when I learnt who was behind her torture at the hands of the Ma'at. I am definatley glad I got this in physical form because the book went flying and a 3 day break was required. Joanne seems aware that she is not as smart as she had portrayed herself in the This one was a little hard to take, Joanne is used by everyone in this one and only Dijinn turn infrit Rahel seems to really do her any favors.
Joanne seems aware that she is not as smart as she had portrayed herself in the previous books and acts for all intense purposes like the abused wife who stays with her husband. This is not a good look for Jo but the end gave me a bit of hope that she will wise up and leave everyone. David is mostley absent from the book, only making a few appearences, as Jo is forced to give up his bottle at the begining of the book.
For the most part Jo seems still very much in love with Lewis, who is very quick to abuse Jo and who clearly only sees Jo as an object for sex, though the sentiment seems to stand for most men she is associated with. Aug 19, Lucy rated it it was amazing. Another great book in this series. I absolutely love Rachel Caine. She's an amazing writer. The thing about this series is that you can learn things while you're reading it.
You can learn about the climate, the different levels of weather. I think it's great how she's done that.

Jo is kick ass awesome, David is adorable, as per, Lewis is sweet and always trying to do good, Jonathan is kinda a dick in this one, and I can't help but love Kevin So Jo goes to Vegas to try to stop Kevin from creating another ice age, but finds out David has given her a little surprise to keep her safe from Jonathan, which I thought was really cute. I also can't help but wonder how many times a protagonist can die, because she's died at least once in every book so far, and there's only a number of things she can be reborn into.
I really recommend these books. They're kick ass, action filled, with the occasional bit of romance in there too. Many Wardens are dead, Djinn are disappearing, and a new group wants Joanne to destroy Kevin This is the 3rd installment in Caine's Weather Warden and picks up where the last book left off. This book is non-stop action and reminds me of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. While the first two books had some slow sections and made me feel like I needed a degree in meteorology to follow what was happening, I must be catching onto the lingo because this was a very enjoyable read.
Set primarily in and around Las Vegas, this novel introduces a new organisation - the Ma'at - and also refers back to previously unmentioned events in Joanne's life.
