And further still, we not only witness the extremes to which a madman was prepared to go, but how his ever loyal entourage, right down to kids on the street, as in Hitler Youth, for whom Hitler would show his face from time to time and offer gratitude, was ready to go the full distance also, come what may, and for a man who never had or believed in a plan b.
The sole object was to destroy. Philosophically, the book also introduces us the idea of Hitler in German history. Was he a product of consistency rather than a German catastrophe? And yet Fest succeeds in making all this accessible in a novel-sized book of less than pages. The most remarkable takeaway from the book for me was that once Hitler admitted to himself that success was impossible and his vision for world dominance was doomed, he had no interest in salvaging what was left of the German people or culture. All his last activities, and the confusion following his death, the best they can be reconstructed, are described here. I found the book a very good and compelling read. It read like fiction, but at the same time seemed to display sound judgement and great attention to both detail and historical truth.

According to this book, Hitler merely revelled in destruction, and took more satisfaction from carnage, chaos and ultimate defeat than from any victory he managed to attain.
