It felt like the author just said fuck it half way and decided to write a completely different book for the second half. Besides that, as I said I hated the hero. He was an awful character and an awful person in general. Yes, he saved the heroine and her brother but until that point he he a true bastard to her.

Of course she's a tortured soul who deserves kindness and love yet instead he chose to drug and convince her that he raped her. But of course, she did the same thing to him yet indeed her uncle and the slave girl DID rape him. He was unconscious and unaware. I forget the disturbing focus the hero had the heroine breasts.

He mention them, thought of them and touched them as much as he could to the point that I was uncomfortable. Very VERY poorly written story and one that seriously damages the chances of me reading another of book of this author.

There's a reason why the reviews below are nothing by a sea of 1 star and 2 star. Trust in your fellow readers! Jul 02, Lexi Willcox rated it did not like it. I am honestly disgusted on how many people actually enjoyed this book! Sophia has been controlled and abused all her life by her uncle in Jamaica and is made to pretend to be a harlot in order for her Uncle to gain money, controlled, whatever he wants.

So she pursoos him, other things happen all resulting in her having to marry Ryder, who claims to do this in order to protect her. He feels absolutely no remorse, only wanting her to want him, that's all he cares about. Himself and his need to control his "Hellion Bride". Then he repeatedly continues to use the pattern of rape to try and teach her love?!?!?! I know it was back in the 90's and that was a popular theme, but the Hero only STARTED out like then came to his senses and starts treating her with some respect.

Ryder never gives her an ounce. There is not one sentence of romance. I was so disappointed. I was really hoping that the story would turn into the Hero truly healing and showing the Heroin what real love is, but he was no better the the Uncle. He just used his strength, sexist personality and penis instead of his fists to abuse her. Through the whole book I just kept waiting for the Chapter where he realizes his error and turns it around, but his need to control only got worse!!!!!! It's disgusted and it sickened me to my very core.

This book was repulsive. May 11, Rhapsody rated it really liked it Recommends it for: This one barely makes 3 stars for me. Maybe I've just been reading too many of these novels lately and all the drama is wearing me out. Anyway, it has all Coulter's usual elements; Sophie, the heroine, was abused, this time by her uncle who was hitting her and forcing her to pretend to be a loose woman so that he could manipulate her lovers.

Ryder, the second Sherbrooke son this is the second novel of the Brides trilogy, though I haven't read the other two arrives in Jamaica to solve the mystery in which Sophie and her uncle are at the center. About half the book passes in Jamaica, the other half back in England. It was okay--actually, I definitely loved certain parts. I thought Sophie was a good character--very spirited at times, other times very subdued and wary.

Ryder I didn't like so much. He was just a little bit too much of a jerk. He was used to controlling women and I resented him for constantly coercing Sophie. From the start, he approached her like something he wanted to dominate just for the fun of it, another game he wanted to win. That attitude is okay within reason Also, I didn't mind this theme in Devil's Embrace, but he basically forced himself on her twice. It didn't ruin the book, but it didn't really work for me either.

Oh, and I really dislike the Sinjun character. I know we don't see much of her and that she's supposed to be very likable sweet, open, innocent, affable, blablabla , but if I had a sister-in-law like that, I'd file for divorce. Mar 12, Debbie rated it really liked it Shelves: Helping out his brother by going to Jamaica to handle a supposed supernatural disturbance on their plantation, Ryder Sherbrook made many surprising discoveries, none of them had anything to do with the supernatural.

Having been forced by her uncle to act a part of mistress to several island men, Sophia Stanton-Greville was not surprised when she was tasked to seduce Ryder. The problem was that Ryder was different, he was not as easily swayed by her beauty and charms like all the others had been. Sensing that something was not quite what it seemed to be, Ryder took things carefully even though he really did want what she offered. Finding out just how far the uncle would go to get what he wanted would not be the last of their problems.

While in the first book, Douglas was arrogant, I started to like him in the end of that one. Start to finish I found him to be an arrogant idiot. Yelling at all his stupidity did me no good. Really liked Sophie, Jeremy, Alex and of course Sinjin. Mar 21, Jessi Thompson rated it it was ok Shelves: I will say this from the beginning BUT if you are like me and you have to read ALL the books in a series once you start, I hope this review helps a little bit to take the sting off reading a book that isn't all that great by knowing that we all feel the same way that you do.

This book is just okay. What a total bastard her uncle was What I mean is blackmailing Sophie to keep her brother safe As in "do as I say and Jeremy will no be harmed" ect. Once the unpleasantness in Jamaica is over and they are reunited in England, I was so proud of Sophie when she found out about Ryder's gaggle of children. She loves them all right away I believe. I won't talk about the end of the book because that is where the book really goes down hill OK I will talk about it a bit She would have told Ryder about Lord David Lochridge's letters and threats.

As well as the involvement of Charles Grammond, that total buffoon. Its a quick read and a nice addition to the series.

There was some hot stuff in this book, but I wouldn't put it at the top of my list for books of Coulter's that I prefer-- within this series or outside of it. Things got off to a promising and interesting start in a Jamaica setting, seemed to be continuing in a promising direction as the setting transitioned to England Then by the time we got both of our protagonists to the Sherbrooke family haven, I was ready to throttle the both of them.

I almost skipped towards the end. I was listening to the Audio CD recording version of this book on my daily commute 2 hours in the car every day , and between the slower-than-I-prefer pace of the narrator, and the protagonists making decisions and taking actions or inactions that seemed functionally unlike the characters as they were written at the beginning of the book, I nearly gave up. The return of Sinjun was a pleasing and uplifting addition to this text, and Alex Sherbrooke, the Earl's new wife, was a pleasant foil to some of the additional goings-on.

I'm okay with that, though. I got through this one, and am hoping that some of the others were more like "The Sherbrooke Bride," and less like the middle-part of "The Hellion Bride. Mar 30, Yui rated it did not like it Shelves: I don't usually mind agrressive heroes forcing heroines but Sophie's plight just didn't agree with me. Her character and experiences were a major factor and it wasn't even as brutal as the rape scene on book 3 but this just rubbed me wrong.

On,second thought I don't like nor mind the actual rape scene. Sophie didn't really want a husband. I'm not sure if there was sexual rape here. I just remember most that I hated this book because I didn't think the heroine got what she deserve here and there wasn't any resolution to all her earlier fears and reservation.

Dec 19, Tonileg rated it it was ok Shelves: This is the story of the second brother of the Sherbrooke clan, Ryder. He lusts and sexes up the ladies, as proof, he has almost ten bastard children to date before the beginning of this story, but he has clearly never been in love with ONE woman. So how does one go about making an convincing argument for 'reforming the rake'? This was pretty good; he has to marry a woman that doesn't want him or any man in the world.

She has been terribly wronged by the men in her life and she has retained her spirit through out her troubles, but she is only 19 and her life started to go horribly wrong when she was 15 so it is possible that if it had continued, she would have had the spirit beaten out of her literally.

I really like this couple. Ryder has a lot of secrets, just like his 'perfect' bride. I would have liked more time with Sinjun, she is a wonderfully smart character. May 25, Daisha rated it it was amazing. So this was the first book I read of Catherine Coulter and I fell in love. Quickly, I grabbed the rest of the "Brides" series as I found the books. Sinjun is one of my very most favorite characters of all time.
