Women, travel and identity. Sternhell emphasizes the crucial role that movement played in the American South during the Civil War. Sternhell features motion as a common motif that linked the experiences of soldiers, civilians, and former slaves, and in so doing she highlights a little-explored topic in the historiography of the Civil War.

This book also makes a more profound statement on the nature of war more generally; in fact, in the prologue, Sternhell ambitiously and quite persuasively places the history of southern movement into a broader global context, making connections to the Napoleonic wars and to the symbolic flight of the French government from Paris during World War II. Sternhell not only investigates the physical movement of people but also interrogates the symbolic meaning of these various migrations. Most users should sign in with their email address.
