I'm curious as to how, because this book was so full of misspelled words, grammar and punctuation errors, and horri bly misused words adjectives used as verbs, verbs used as nouns, and totally incorrect words like "desecrated" for "decimated" and "abscond" for "escape" , that I struggled through half the book before I finally gave up and quit.
If the characters had been interesting enough, I might have tried to continue struggling to make sense of her bizarre way of writing. They were boring, and not worth the battle. Now I know to avoid this "author". First, I want to apologize to Ms. Griffin for taking longer to read Conquered Heart, but my own writing career has kept me extremely busy over the last four months. I thank her for the honor to read her suspenseful Medieval romance.
Conquered Heart is a fast-paced, well-written historical romance. Griffin gave me the opportunity to have a glimpse into the Scottish fight for independence and the life of Robert the Bruce. She definitely did her research. She is a caring, loving woman with plenty of courage and daring. He is, of course, a brave, fierce warrior. That is what I expect from a Scottish highlander, yet underneath his exterior, he has a kind, caring heart. Even though he has had his share of struggles, he is still willing to open his heart to Kerrigan.
I loved his protectiveness toward her and felt his anguish when he thought he had lost her. If you enjoy Medieval romances set in the highlands of Scotland with brave, loyal heroes and heroines, then you will enjoy Conquered Heart as much as I did. Sorry to say I was not as impressed as many were here.

I found the cave life unbelievable They had no problem coming and going and smoke, the smell of cooking fires and so forth. The second cave for the horses too horses also easily fed The boy was always being sent to the village in winter with no winter clothes even in the snow. Why I don't know, the villagers surely took all their food with them when they fled and it was too dangerous once occupied by the English.
Also I didn't see any kind of real plot, just coming, going and coming back again. Couple that with the outside cages that I believe have been an embellished myth handed down by the Scots who hated the English King. Do I believe in the wooden open cages and that the people were allowed to gawk at the women, yes I do!
But like some historians, I believe the open wooden cages were built on the inside of the tower, not the outside. I think I understood the point the author was trying to make; Grey felt very protective of Bree and was super pissed that the King had placed her in danger, but IMHO, she went overboard, thus robbing the story of some of its authenticity. I found it beyond annoying that the woman who had attacked and hurt Bree--very badly, I might add--got off with what I considered a slap on the wrist. I mean, she almost killed Bree AND she was not in the least bit remorseful.
In fact, the opposite is true; she verbally vented her hatred for Bree even after being caught! There are few things I hate worse than when an evil character does not get his or her just desserts.

Another thing that really bothered me is that the fact that Bree is the late King's bastard daughter is given no real significance, other than when the bad guys wanted to use her to usurp the current king. Besides that no one gives it any consequence whatsoever, and the current King , to my knowledge, is never told, or at least he never acknowledges that Bree is his half-sister.
It seemed a waste of a plot device. In any event, I wanted to love this book. When I started reading it, I was hopeful for a five star read--as I always am when I start a new book. By the time I'd gone a few chapters in, I realized that this was probably going to be a three star read for me.

Unfortunately, by the time I got just a few chapters shy of the ending, I started to lose interest. The story is good, but the reading was too hard, and aggravating at times. FYI, this is not a clean romance. There is sex, which is quite graphically described, although no crude language is used. I liked this story enough to give this author another chance. Grey is betrothed at a fairly young age to Albrey who is four or five to his ten years of age. Although kids are too early for romance he is quite fond of the little girl so the betrothal to help cement their clans together is not too much of a hardship.
Even so he doesn't listen to her as much as maybe he should about what one of the clan members has said to her and threatened to do. It was his job to keep an eye on her and he feels guilty when she disappears. He takes a lot of time trying to find her without any luck. He then vows never to marry and focuses on taking care of his clan.
Many years later Bree has been living with a family. Thomas seems to adore her but his wife only seems to like her for her cooking skills. One day she is summoned and told that she is betrothed to a man that she has heard nothing but bad things about him. Wishing not to wed such a man she goes in search of the Gunn clan. Not entirely trusting them either she still believes she will be safer with them which she is especially after Grey and others realize she is the missing Albrey?
Will she marry Grey after all and finally claim the life that was stolen from her? Will the clan die of shock when her cooking is so much better then their current cook? This historical novel set in the Scottish Highlands was a great read and exceeded my expectations. Grey Gunn and Albrey McKay were betrothed as children he was ten and she was five , and Grey swore to protect and care for Albrey, as his father had taught him was expected.
He liked her well enough, and she adored him! During an important celebration Grey was charged with looking after Albrey, which he did with astounding vigilance for one so you, but that evening his attentions were redirected to several of his elders.
It was then that Albrey was taken. Heartbroken and full of guilt, Grey searched for days until his father determined that she was gone and could not be found. Years later, Grey encountered "Bree," a young woman seeking his clan's protection from an unwanted and frightening betrothal to a man she greatly feared.
Grey sensed that there was something more to Bree than she was telling him - she even looked as though he thought his Albrey might look at that age. She could not give him the answers he seemed to be searching for, but felt that she would still be better off with his clan than she would be if she married the man she feared. The book starts out with a beautiful description of the relationship between Grey and Albrey, setting the scene for what could have been a deep and lasting love between the two characters.
