While detailed and vivid, her descriptions were never overdone or too lengthy, they were just.. Combined with the sparkly dialogues and action parts of the book, they created a fabulously entertaining and beautifully imagined story.

And I couldn't get enough of it! The third-person narrative proved to be a good choice for this book. It made the story flow more dynamic and action-oriented, without being too impersonal or emotionless. I enjoy books that are rich in character's inner thoughts and reflections, but I also appreciate ones that are more plot-driven. And Phoebe Pope and the Year of Four is an excellent example of a story that balances both these aspects. As I already mentioned above, the world development was very good, too. Nya Jade's original ideas and all the elements unique to the world she created example: Utaviium, a pale blue crystal enchanted to capture and hold a lightning added a lot of flavor to the story, resulting in a world that, although fantastically magical, remained believable.

Overall, I had so much fun reading this book, I can't imagine anyone not liking it! It was a tremendously enjoyable story, with fantastic characters, original and clever story line and a perfectly satisfying conclusion that left me pining for the next instalment in the series! I definitely recommend this one to fans of all things paranormal and fantasy, you will not be disappointed!

WOW, this is such an awesome read. Being a debut novel for Nya Jade, this book was fantastic and a great introduction to the series. The characters are unique and with each page they evolve and create a world that is like no other. Phoebe Pope is the protagonist and has been unique her whole life.

Her mother skipped out on her when she was a c WOW, this is such an awesome read. Her mother skipped out on her when she was a child and after being chased by Vigo shaper bad guys her Father and Phoebe have a car accident where her Father is caught and killed. Phoebe has scars that run deeper than just her skin and has trouble dealing with leaving her father behind. Now living with her Grandfather, Phoebe is packed off and sent to a boarding school, Green Lane Academy. This school is special; there are two levels, Above and Below. Above is where normal school happens, where humans and shapers attend classes like Maths and English, but it is Below where the real schooling happens for Phoebe.

Below is where Phoebe learns how to kill a Vigo and use her elemental powers. There seems to be a big increase in Vigo activity around the Boston area, where the Academy is located and precautions have been made to make sure Vigo are noticed if they come close. During an initiation event with the new students, an attack takes place and a girl is shot with an arrow, Phoebe is dragged away into the forest by a Vigo and is trying to fight back.

All of a sudden another Vigo comes along and fights the Vigo for the prize. Who is her saviour? There is a prophecy, during the year of four, there will ONE that will be able to fight against Vigo and destroy them. This is such a year; there are four students enrolled that are half human and half shaper, called Hyphas.

These four students will have special classes to help build their elemental powers and determine who will be the special one. In the Above campus, there is a celebrity attending school. Colten Chase is causing all sorts of drama with his awesome good looks and popularity with the girls. Phoebe is instantly attracted, but so is every other girl in school. Colten seems to notice Phoebe straight away and pursues her.

See a Problem?

They get closer each time they spend time together, but Colten seems too perfect, something seems off. When two of her special classmates are kidnapped, all hell breaks loose and security is upped. Phoebe and the last Hypha are under close security. Phoebe is determined to find out who is behind the kidnappings and why.

She follows a lead and sneaks off campus, but of course gets captured. Can Phoebe escape from the baddies? Will she be able to find out who is behind the kidnappings? What about Colten the hottie, can they be together even though they are from different worlds? Can Phoebe find the other teenagers before they are killed? Who will be the ONE? I really need book two now! I highly recommend this to all readers, it is such a fun and addictive read. View all 4 comments. This was an excellent debut novel by this author.

It was well written with a simple, smooth flowing style and great dialogue. The premise was enticing, too--a boarding school with normal human activities above ground and dangerous, magical spy classes below for Shapers like Phoebe. The story was chock full of secrets, lies, betrayals and twists. Phoebe's character was complex and likeable. At times, she was a normal teenager with all the usual angst, worries and trauma that plague young girls, es This was an excellent debut novel by this author. At times, she was a normal teenager with all the usual angst, worries and trauma that plague young girls, especially when she was attending her regular classes Above.

But, she was also a half-human shifter who was learning to be a kick-ass secret agent. She had a unique ability to read other people's emotions and to push them into feeling whatever emotion she wanted them to. Trying to juggle her double life was difficult, but she managed it very well. Discovering that she might be involved in a startling prophecy and was the target of the enemy Vigo who would stop at nothing to capture her and the other three Hyphas certainly didn't make her life any easier, either.

I loved Hayley, Phoebe's best friend. She had an irresistable, bubbly personality, and the bond between her and Phoebe was sweet and strong. She was more of a girly-girl than Phoebe and tried to engage Phoebe in typical teenage activities like Spa Sunday. I really enjoyed the banter and camaraderie between the two girls. Colten Chase was a hottie--a movie star, handsome, sexy and mysterious.

His relationship with Phoebe was complicated, sweet and full of secrets on both their parts. With the introduction of Scott, another cute boy, I was afraid there would be a love triangle that would overshadow the rest of the story. But, this turned out to be not the case, thank goodness. The action in the final chapters was very well done, and I had no idea who the traitors were until they were revealed. This is definitely the mark of a good writer who can keep the reader guessing until the end. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, but wasn't too abrupt or unsatisfactory.

The Year of Four (Phoebe Pope, #1) by Nya Jade

It certainly hinted at more to come, and I hope there will be a sequel to this story soon. This one was ok. I thought it would be so much better, but sadly that was not the case. There were HUGE infodumps disguised as class info, too much slang that I barely understood, and it just was not that interesting. Plus some awfully predictable plot twists. XD Ok there was one twist I was shocked at but that is it. Phoebe held back a smile. But damn that boy for making my brain go all mush. Because I feel like it's backward and upside down and maybe just a whole lot out of place after this wild, awesome read! The action is fast-paced and super intense; I was biting my nails and holding my breath through the majority of this read. Nya Jade breathed life into this world, and immersed me fully into it.

  • For the hours I spent reading, I left reality and stood right beside these characters--basically experiencing the same things they did. Pure reader ecstasy, promise. These characters are well-rounded and complex, handling a bunch of different stuff that both individualizes them and brings them together. I had a ton of fun following each of them on their journeys--and was so caught up in the one plot twist I saw coming, I didn't think there'd be a second, BIGGER one to come!

So kudos to Nya Jade for catching me by surprise on that one; I definitely love when those unexpected roller coaster moments happen. And that can be detrimental to the one on the field. I totally blame Twilight for this--that whole "survives on blood but doesn't kill because special snowflake not a monster" trope.

I wish that hadn't been used in this read--it would have made things even MORE entertaining, and much less predictable, for me as a reader. Or is that asking for too much? Either way, it bothered me. Still, this read was super entertaining! The action was fast-paced and intense, the characters are SO much fun to watch, and there was a wild roller coaster moment of a plot twist that caught even ME off guard. The moonester has begun, Penguins; what are YOU studying?! Jun 14, Rae Sontheyon rated it it was amazing.

It's been a while that a book had engrossed me and this plot has obviously been well crafted. The introduction into a new world of shapeshifter hidden but living among humans while maintaining their hierarchy, social networks, history and secrets is fascinating fiction. The female lead is strangely relatable and had found herself in this shaper world, but not really part of it, until awful things happened and action was required. Deciding to enroll in the prestigious Gree Shapers vs. Deciding to enroll in the prestigious Green Lane Academy, after the death of her father, Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Pope should be excited to begin a new phase over life.

The school not only hosts a top notch academic environment, but is a cover for the Campus Below which is a shape-shifters spy academy. Having two schedules for classes above and below is hard to keep up with, especially when per. Admins instructions extra training is added to bring her and others up to date on shifter ways. However, circumstances at the school begin to change as the tutors lessons become less hypothetical and the enemy they all fear comes too near. Even covering up the issues from below campus becomes a balancing act for Phoebe, whose life is now more than a little scrutinized thanks to her new crush teen heartthrob actor Colten Chase.

So as the pressure from a prophecy begins to build and the enemy comes closer and closer still, Phoebe faces the hard task of deciding who she can trust and who is the liars amongst allies. Overall, great young adult shifter read. Honestly, I think this is my first YA shifter read that was purely all about shifters. As a first novel in a series this book definitely opened up the setting and world to me perfectly.

I'm just sad I can't see one of the conversion take place. Though the author does sprinkle in an illustration after a chapter or two. Now my favorite characters are Phoebe obviously and Hayley, got love having a bff relationship. Phoebe is the lead girl the heroine, she's also all about photography so no matter what she awesome.

Hayley is Phoebe opposite and all things girly so she helps Phoebe embrace everything, including opening herself to liking Colten. I'm excited for the next novel especially since the story was building and the Four are definitely special. So if you like animal shifters who are training to be spy's against their enemies who hunt humans as energy source, this book will peak your interest. Mar 21, Tony Parsons rated it really liked it. Jun 15, Larissa rated it it was amazing. This is one of the most memorable Young Adult books I've read in a while! It's definitely my favorite book I've taken on for review all year! There was so much good going on in this book that I almost want to stay up even later than it is as I write this review 2am to see what happens next!

I love Phoebe and her ability to be both kick butt and vulnerable. The author also does a really great job introducing the reader to the world of the story: I felt like I had a clear picture of t 4. I felt like I had a clear picture of this world, but I also wasn't inundated with too much information at any one time with info-dumps.

And even though this book does make use of some YA tropes fancy boarding school, super hunky love interest "The Year of Four" manages to make them feel fresh - and, who am I kidding, I love those tropes so who cares! If they're used well, I don't think they should have to have a bad name. Part of what makes them feel so fresh is that even though some plot points I was able to predict, other developments kept me completely on my toes! The long and short of it is: I highly recommend this book! Especially for YA fans, read this book! I think you might find it is the next binge-able series you have been looking for.

I know it had a lot of things that I look for in YA that keeps me coming back to the genre even though I'm not in the targeted age range anymore. Phoebe was a very strong character who stood up for what she believed in and would fight until death to save someone she loved. She would do whatever it took to save her friends. Besides if she had used her powers before she really had to what would have happened to her and her friends?

I decided to give it a try. It did start off very much like Harry Potter. The history is much more complex with the whole object being to fight their enemies more like vampire academy who are shapeshifters of a sort who turned like vampires.
