While Ashes of Rose's is moderately well written, I realized that when I got to the back information pages, it was mainly supposed to be about the triangle shirtwaist factory fire!
I thought that was weird, since the book was more about Rose's adjustment to America, and not very much about the fire itself. In reality, the fire was only a few pages long, and in my opinion the author should've written input in the middle so that we'd gotten to see how Rose adjusted afterwards.

The ending was so ab While Ashes of Rose's is moderately well written, I realized that when I got to the back information pages, it was mainly supposed to be about the triangle shirtwaist factory fire! The ending was so abrupt, it seemed rushed, as if the author thought she just needed to end it. Even, there wasn't enough tragedy, since only a few of the main characters died. I think Mary should have made more tragedy so it would've broken Rose more.

The two sisters liked working there and it made them happy that they had somewhere to live and were together. After working for a while there was a fire! At the time nobody knew how the fire really started but, nobody really cared. All they wanted was to get out of there.
There was so much commotion while everyone was trying to get out that the line to the downstairs was very slow and people died because nobody could get down the stairs consequently; people made bad decisions about how to get out quicker.

After the fire was over and all the bodies were shipped to the morgue people could go confirm their loved ones. Rose and Maureen went there after they had gathered themselves after the fire. They went there to see if their friends were there because they didn't know if they were okay or not. There is a reason why I love reading Mary Jane Auch books and it's because she makes you feel like you are experiencing what the characters are and, feeling what they are feeling. Her books are exciting, melancholy, and emotional all at the same time. I personally think that she is a exceptionally good author and I would really love to read more of her books.

I understand, that there our people behind these books, who usually work part time jobs, and spend countless hours of their life writing, but this is just lazy writing from an author who clearly does not respect literature as an art, and only thinks of it as an way to score an extra paycheck from unsuspecting 9 year old girls who don't know any better than to read this crap.

Sep 07, Kim rated it liked it. The story moved quickly and was interesting. I just wish there had been more about the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and it's aftermath. If so, I would have given it even more stars.
The cover of the book shows an old photograph of the factory, which, along with the title, led me to believe the story of the fire would be a greater part of the story. However, the main character, Rose, does not even begin to walk to her first day of work at the factory until the chapter beginning on page in a page book!
I was able to do that with this book, but the reader has to wait until more than halfway through the book to get to the fire at the factory. The first half of the book was interesting though, and through Rose, the reader learns what is what like to enter America through Ellis Island and try to live particularly as an immigrant in the bustling city of New York in the early s. It is evident that the author did her research on life in New York in and the fire itself through her descriptions of certain scenes throughout the story.
An early traumatic scene in a sweatshop is described vividly and the whole part of the story dealing with the fire and it's aftermath is heart wrenchingly realistic. I would recommend this book to those interested in this time period of American history, or Irish immigration to NYC.

ASHES OF ROSES
Its in a time that I find really interesting. I thought the characters could be developed a little further. This is a really good read for a younger audience. I liked how the author laid out the setting of the country at that time. Ashes of Roses by Christine Pope
Rose and Maureen struggle to get by, and they are barely doing so working at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Then, as Rose is starting to make friends and settle in, a devastating fire at the Factory causes her, Maureen, and her friends to fight for their lives. As Rose is surrounded by pain, tragedy, and ashes, she wonders if there's anything left for her in America. I really liked this book! Rose is such a strong character, and her story is very inspiring. It gives the reader a perspective on the life of an immigrant; what it's like to arrive in America from a different country and try to start a new life.
It's a powerful story, and there are many different emotions that I experienced while reading. This book could be used in the classroom to talk about not giving up hope, even in the toughest of times. It's important to have courage and stay positive when something tragic happens, even though it is very hard to do so. Jul 04, Rosa Cline rated it it was amazing Shelves: Very nicely written book based upon true to life events that happened so many years ago. What a way to honor and remember those that perished upon that day.
Although this story was 'made up' all the events and feelings etc was based upon real life people and how they felt. Irish, German, etc coming to America to make a better life. And getting here only to see some of the family turned back no Wow And getting here only to see some of the family turned back not to enter into America. Then those that got to stay had to endure the harsh treatments that those that were here treated them.
But in the mist of it all young women still keep to the hope and promise of a better life.
I was influenced to read this book because of the PBS biography of the Triangle fire; and come to find out in the back of this book is an author's note where she wrote about the things that influenced her on her data and ideas for the book and she noted that same biography. This will certainly be a book I'd like to add to my own library Nov 05, Jyothi Polackal rated it it was amazing. Unfortunately her youngest brother, Joseph, had been declared sick and was sent with her father back to Ireland. They constantly glared at th Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch was one of the greatest historical fiction books I have ever read!
They constantly glared at them and gossiped right in front of their faces. It was too much for Rose's mother to handle so she went back to Ireland leaving behind Rose and Maureen who begged her for them to stay behind. It scared me to think that Rose and her sister, Maureen, were left in America alone because they had no clue what things the new country held. Things got scarier when both of the girls went to the Triangle Shirtwaist factory to work for a decent pay.
A fire broke out and both girls are left. To fight for their life. The characters are well wr Retelling of Cinderella When I first started reading this, I thought that perhaps the author had borrowed too much from Ever After, however the further into the story I got, the more I realised that it was more of her own twist on several versions of Cinderella. The characters are well written, and sympathetic, and the Emperor's seasonings are sound. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Classic I enjoyed this retelling of Cinderella very much. Ashara Mellende is our Cinderella character and I really enjoyed listening to her story. It was a breath of fresh air. I also really enjoyed hearing the Prince's sow of the story which is not as common and made the story that much better.
The author does wonderfully with crafting a complete. But this tale isn't exactly straight forward. There it's action, trickery, lie Classic I enjoyed this retelling of Cinderella very much. There it's action, trickery, lies and story of a plot twist. I look forward to reading other books by this author very soon. Jan 09, Siv Therese rated it it was ok. Quite francly for me too weak heroine, too fast "fall-in-love" making in not so believable since no magic involved , only one "action" scene, wich consisted of running and nothing else and no depth.
But the upsides were, the writing style. I really did like the "fairy-tale" sort of feeling, it just didn't capture my heart, or bring forth any emotions from me as a reader. A beautiful love story in a Cinderella fashion. I liked the somehow solo development of their attraction and love for each other. Torricelli and Ashara were very interesting characters to discover and follow. The fact that w had both side of the story made it even better.
One never get tired of a happy ending. Apr 14, Sandra rated it did not like it Shelves: He sees her red hair across a field filled with women and knows she's the one. However although it was a nice sweet romance, I was never truly sold on the romance.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the other stories in this series, however, so I will continue to the next. Jun 27, Jan rated it it was ok Shelves: Inferior retelling of Cinderella the author has done so much better with other books , and I think that there were equipment problems for the narrator who I normally enjoy! Wish I could say something nicer, but This book could have been so much more. The was no connection with the main characters because little time was spent on their development.
I wanted to love the story but there wasn't enough substance there for that to happen. Oct 24, Brittany rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is book 4 in the Latter Kingdom series.
This is a good take on the Cinderella tale. I just really enjoyed this story a great deal. I loved the romance and just about everything about it. I cannot wait for the next one! Feb 04, Trisha rated it liked it. Cute spin on Cinderella. I liked how they stretched out the acquaintance HOWEVER they didn't take the opportunity to make their relationship seem real or believable, it was all instant attraction crap.
Also the adult content at the end was completely unnecessary. Jul 27, Jassa rated it liked it. Oh its another Cinderella tale. There are just so many of them! I liked this one well enough. I liked the idea behind it and the little twist of it with the aunt. Though I kind of felt that there was more to the story with the Aunt.
Happy endings and all that jazz. Feb 06, Jenn rated it it was amazing. A Cinderella story set in the Middle East made for a nice spin on the often told fairy tale. The plot and the premise were the same, but the subtle changes made for a nice read. Sep 12, Rachel Antzak rated it liked it Shelves: A retelling of the Cinderella tale. Apr 15, Wayward Cabbage rated it liked it. While I did enjoy this novel, I felt that the romance just went too quickly, they had known each other for a few stolen hours and decided to marry.
Feb 26, Tanya rated it liked it Shelves: A slower version set in Europe , it was entertaining but a little slow. May 09, Hillary Scholz rated it liked it. Different take on Cinderella. Cinderella seemed to have more of a backbone in this story and I liked how it focused just as much on the prince as it did on Cinderella.
