Bethune would insist that the curriculum would be project-based, and all assignments would have to be down from the cultural perspective and lens of a known minority during the era. The class would be taught by an instructor, who would present a project-based overview of American history in the first few classes, and then have groups present mini- projects every two or three weeks on different eras.
As soon as I understood something, I rushed back and taught it to the others at home. For the first time, I gathered the family in a circle around me and read aloud to them from the Good Book [the Bible]. That night I drove the first nail of my life work. Emphasizing the high-quality and culturally-diverse whole language approach, literacy instruction would focus on using and understanding the meaning making role of phonics, grammar, spelling, capitalization and punctuation in diverse social contexts.
Students would be exposed to documents, stories, and texts from all over the world to facilitate critical and creative thinking, reading, and writing about the lives of others different from them in their learning community. By creating a shared understanding of the diversity and culture children bring to school, students would be motivated and engaged to read and write for the real purpose of relating to the people around them.
