A very good overview of what to expect when you are losing your life-long pet companion. The author does a great job of sharing her own personal journey and helped me to be more prepared for the inevitable loss of my ailing senior pet companion. I purchased a second copy to help console a friend who is still grieving the loss of her dog. One person found this helpful. I think I read this entire book in one day.
An interest of mine is palliative and hospice care in animals and this is a great resource from the person who started the first formal funeral services for pets. Pets are part of the family and we need more resources like this to help guide us through the process with a caring attitude. This book fulfills everything you have wanted to know regarding the respectful and compassionate ways to honor your companion animal when they must leave you.
It is a must read for those with a strong companion animal bond.
Pet Loss Companioning
This book should be mandatory reading for every pet owner. It is cheerfully written and full of sound advice and spiritual solace. No one knows quite how hard they will be hit when a valued family member passes.
And it is tough to make rational decisions when one is grieving, so having a 'How to' guide is truly a Blessing. Reading about the author's journey is a delight. This is truly a calling for her, one based on harsh personal experience and a deep and abiding passion for the bond that forms between quadripeds and the bipeds. Her story is liberally sprinkled with moving accounts of many other families experience; and when you put all this information in one place, it becomes an invaluable resource.
Marty Becker, whose latest book, by coincidence I happen to own, like and also favorably reviewed, provides a thoughful and insightful foreward. He talks about the challenges veterinarians face, they try to keep animals alive, that is their goal. However, a part of being a doctor is helping those left behind, when their skills are unable to save a beloved pet.
He understands, values and respects Coleen's work. In the interests of full disclosure, I met Coleen at a veterinarian conference, I shared with her the fact that our own dog had recently passed away. She was genuinely interested and caring and asked for some pictures of the small memorial we created, so it was with some delight that I saw Cajun being featured at the start of Chapter 4.
He was a good friend, so sharing a little of him with readers of this book is a very cool way to honor his memory. This does rather guarantee that I am inclined to be a fan of the book.
Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief
However, even if I had never met her, objectively, this is a fine book, well written and one you will never regret owning, because when you or a friend needs it, you will be glad it is there. This is really a sweetand at the same time, a practicalbook for all pet lovers. This was at a time when veterinarians had little to offer, other than "disposing" of the body. But her love for little Mico compelled her to found the first stand-alone pet funeral home in the nation.
This experience will give you an idea of the book.

It is full of love and understanding, while at the same time offering sound advice on how to plan ahead for--and how to deal with--that sad day that is sure to come. In between these two goals, she has sprinkled in wonderful stories of inspiring pets and their loving owners. So, you can look upon this as a guidebook for a time in your life when you may definitely need an understanding hand to guide you along. But it is also more than a guidebook: Colleen, her husband, and her family share a love for the animals who enrich our lives; they have created a special place, and an ongoing resource.
This is a book you should have, even if you have just brought your puppy or kitty home. You don't have to wait until you heart is breaking to appreciate the kind words and the wisdom of the author. Dan Carrison, author of Bill at Rainbow Bridge.
Pet Grief Counseling Certification
This was beyond a great read! This book provides information for any pet lover who is interested in learning more about death and grieving of their beloved pets. Coleen discusses everything from wonderful stories of pets who have passed on to how to plan and heal from a pet's loss. Most important, to me, is that she give people permission that is sometimes needed to grieve the loss of a pet, who is a valued family member. Still many people think it's odd to openly grieve a pet even when they are pet lovers themselves probably because it does somehow not seem acceptable in our society.
The truth is, pets are taking on new roles in society today as more people are choosing to not have human children or who are waiting until later years to do so. Pets sometimes become a primary focus in these situations. Coleen acknowledges that each person has their own way of grieving and there is no right or wrong. She also gives many ideas on ways to honor pets we have lost, which also assists us humans in the grieving and healing process that is so often needed but not recognized.
