I have to say that I was honestly surprised at how terrible this book series is. I read them all because I continued to have hope they would get better, and they actually got worse. I now regret wasting so much time on this book and the three others that followed. The skeleton of the "book" was a good concept, but Ms. Fogarty took what could have been a great idea and completely bombed it.
The writing style is terrible. I don't think I've ever seen so many technical, paragraph, and writing error I have to say that I was honestly surprised at how terrible this book series is. I don't think I've ever seen so many technical, paragraph, and writing errors in my life in this book and the sequels. Write a customer review. And it sure lived up to my high expectations. Semper Fi is a beautiful, and at times heart breaking, love story. But, it is also about friendship, loyalty, self-discovery, and family. I really enjoy Keira A I won an early copy of Semper Fi, so had the distinct pleasure of reading it before it is published.
She is adept at describing scenes and action as well as portraying characters and their emotions. Many times supporting child characters can be one-sided or unrealistic. But, Sophie was complex and genuine. I have a year old daughter to compare. The time period and POV were always clear to me. I liked reading about how Jim and Cal met and developed their close friendship during the war alongside their reunion and romance in Both storylines move along quickly and I had a hard time putting my Kindle down when regular life intervened.
There are several sexy scenes, but they are not gratuitous. They are wonderfully emotional and serve to further the relationship and character development. The book is also replete with details and descriptions that made me feel like I was there in that time and place. Keira Andrews must have done her homework! I learned things about World War II, apple farming and the s, yet the narrative was not bogged down at all.
I will mention that some of the war scenes are harrowing hence the warning at the end of the book synopsis and some of the language the soldiers use especially about the Japanese was difficult to read but authentic. The ending is worth all the hurt to get there! The last line of the main story is perfect: It made me adore Sophie even more. And if you have never read anything by her yet, I still highly recommend it!
Nov 27, Bev rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Lovers of Great Writing and Romantics!! I didn't skip anything in the story at all, I wanted to savour it and even read the gory bits when the guys were in the Far East during the war.

A wonderfully romantic love story for Cal and Jim. Thanks to Eva for making me push it up the queue. Nov 06, Connie Cat rated it it was amazing Shelves: I loved everything about it. It was sad in parts but not over the top. And the happy, sexy times more than made up for the sad times. And the ending was perfect!
Going to start "The Forbidden Rumspringa" now. I bought it a while ago and never got around to reading it. Now I need to! Keira Andrews can really write! Cal Jim If you loved Band of Brothers, you will love this book. Nov 19, Steelwhisper rated it it was ok Shelves: I'm sorry, but this fell rather flat for me within sight of the first page. But I'm over this by now. Nov 17, wesley rated it really liked it Shelves: But Keira Andrews writes the whole thing beautifully that ha Reading this was like watching an old film through a movie reel. It was OK, more than OK. It was very unique.
The MCs had such a strong chemistry between them.

I liked how supportive of each other they were. This book is so emotional. Cal and Jim are "army buddies" during WWI. They went to war together, enduring everything together. Despite his unconditional friendship, Cal always wanted more from Jim, but since Jim was married with children and obviously straight , he never told him about his feelings. Then war ended, and they went their separa 3. Then war ended, and they went their separate ways. Cal never forgot Jim. Jim runs a farm and he asks for Cal's help. Cal is more than eager to help him and with Jim's wife being dead, Cal's feelings reawaken strongly.
They begin a fragile relationship, but there are many obstacles in their way. This is a time when homosexual relationships were banned and Jim has to think about his children future rather than his own. Watching them together was so heart warming. The bond they have is amazing. The hotness is off the charts. I liked also the side characters. Jim's children were such darlings. Little Sophie and Adam were lovely. It would have been better, though, if there were less war events, but I understand their importance.
It shows how Cal and Jim became best friends and everything that happened when they were fighting the Japs, how they forged their friendship. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to read a sweet army MM romance. You won't be disappointed. Nov 11, Jules Lovestoread rated it it was amazing. Masterful storytelling by Keira Andrews, and Cal and Jim will steal your heart. The chapters have alternating flashbacks to Cal and Jim during WWII, and then jumps to , which is present day in the story, and it works absolutely brilliantly.
See a Problem?
I was immediately sucked in. So, so many things to love about this book. Do yourselves a favor, and check it out! Cal is from Manhattan, and is the son of a banking mogul. Cal has known for ages that he is gay, but doesn't advertise that since doing so in the 's would be too dangerous, being as how it's illegal and all.
Jim's married and has a kid and though he has some idea that he is attracted to men or at least Cal , he is deep Semper Fi tells the story of Jim and Cal, two marines who served in WWII. Jim's married and has a kid and though he has some idea that he is attracted to men or at least Cal , he is deep in denial and thinks there is something wrong with him. He is definitely attracted to Cal, and he and Cal become close friends during their service.
And, although Cal has been in love with Jim since they became friends in boot camp, as far as he knows Jim is straight, so Cal, even though it hurts, doesn't take their relationship beyond friendship. The story alternates between and so you get a good picture of who these men are, during wartime and after.
It lets you see what they experienced and thought and I think really helped with the big picture. Keira Andrews really captured the pain and heartache and heartbreak so very well. I loved this story. It grabbed me right in the feelz and didn't let go. With his white spit flying in my face Now, this book, yes, wow And even with my horrid flashbacks, due to wonderful obviously driven research, this was a treasure find.
I love the way this writter made me feel like I was marching right along with these guys. This book is vivid perfection. And I loved that. I would have liked it so much more if part 1,2 and 3 were the division of the year, thus, making the flow more chronological. Nevertheless, i really liked this story. Im very impressed with the amount of research the author did. It made me feel like I was actually there watching the whole thing happen.

The apple orchard backdrop of the story was really lovely and added a romantic appeal to the story. I am not a fan of frequent flashbacks but it really worked well here and I did not find it confusing at all. The reason why I did not give this 5 stars is because I was not really emotionally invested with the 2 MCs. I was excpecting tears and all that jazz from Im very impressed with the amount of research the author did. I was excpecting tears and all that jazz from my end.
I dont know, might be because I expected too much or Might just be one those days. This the 2nd book Ive read from this author, the 1st being Love Match which I liked, and will definitely check out her other books. Very well written and definitely a must read!
This book was perfect. It was vivid, brutal, frustrating, beautiful, and also, smokin' hot. I loved every page. I'm really, really going to miss Cal and Jim so, so much. They will be remembered as much as Vadim and Dan. These phenomenally written military stories grab you and won't let you go. I really enjoyed the historical aspects of Semper Fi.
The way Kiera Andrews told the story was brilliant. Typically, flashing back to the past and then right back to the present, while switching points of view would lessen the impact of the story, but it only added to Cal and Jim's journey. There were quite a few scenes that took my breath away and quite a few scenes that made me cry.
Also, I don't normally enjoy small humans mixed in with my MM romance novels, but Sophie and Adam did not detract at all from the story. This was a beautifully written love story. I am so glad the author chose to end it the way she did, too. It was just amazing. I really could go on forever about how amazing this book was. Oct 05, Katrina Passick Lumsden rated it really liked it. I didn't love it.
Five stars would have been a given had the main characters had a bit more oomph in their chemistry. Don't get me wrong, I liked them both, but Jim was a bit difficult to like given the way he was willing to continually hurt his best friend, and overall, I felt their interactions could have been I'll probably keep it on my Kindle for a little while before deciding Very well done best-friends-turned-lovers romance set in post-WWII America.
I'll probably keep it on my Kindle for a little while before deciding what to ultimately do with it. Kept on Kindle for now. Nov 17, Paul rated it it was amazing Shelves: It was such a beautifully written story and it's going to stick with me for a very long time. I rarely read books set back in time, but after all the rave review I was seeing I'm glad I jumped on the bandwagon and went for the ride.
It's even got me speaking all gooey. Temper Fi was possibly one of the sweetest and saddest love stories.

The way Keira Andrews had the story seamlessly sliding along a timeline as she built their relationship waxing and waning while weaving it together was just flawless. That was so well written it was akin to watching someone sculpture time but at the same time it was like silk being unravelled. Oct 28, Chris, the Dalek King rated it it was amazing Shelves: With this being the weekend before Christmas, and me in usual procrastinated form, this review might get a little more fly-by than I would normally like.
But I still have other deadlines to meet this weekend and not all of them involve baking, more's the pity. So, without further ado I freaking loved this book. I really did, and that was a bit of a shock to me. I really dislike flashbacks, and generally hate when they are an integral part of the the story telling, so I went into this kinda expecting to be disappointed with what I found. Somehow the flashbacks to the war really work in building up both the tension and the characters themselves. And every time it felt like the past was getting a little to heavy and was dragging me down, we would switch back to 'present' and I would ease up.
It made for a really great rhythm for the story. It kept me interested constantly; on edge enough that I needed to find out what was going to happen, but never so far that I dreaded going any further. And I think that Jim and Cal's individual reactions to their sexuality, while different, both came out feeling very real. Cal, who seemed to always know who he was, and didn't feel all that bad about it, also did not just bury his head in the sand when it came to acknowledging the consequences of his actions.
He just knew that the reward was worth the risk. And Jim, who was raised to believe that everything he was feeling was a sin, also knew that he would never love anyone the way he would love Cal. Even if that love was tempered with fear of what it could cost--his children. Though certainly sad in some parts, this was a very evenly tempered story and one I quite enjoyed reading. The historical aspects--especially those concerning racial slurs--were sometimes hard to read from a 21st century perspective but I also felt like they were there for a reason. War was not whitewashed, and neither was the racism.
And I liked that. Both are horrible things, but if we constantly forget that they exist than we will never see a reason to change. Overall, very good book and I am very glad to have picked it up for review.
