The widow and her two daughters heard the commotion — they came out of their cottage and saw the fox carrying away Chanticleer and they ran after him. Col the dog gave chase, and the cow and the calf, and the family of pigs joined in. Only the geese flew up to the trees in fright and took no part in the desperate pursuit of that criminal, the fox.

But surely it was too late. That wicked fox had almost reached the safety of the woods. Just then, although he was full of fright and terror, Chanticleer managed to speak to his abductor. They will never catch you. I would say, "Fi, a pestilence on you all! And words of that sort, for you are an eloquent creature. But our hero Chanticleer was no fool.

As soon as the fox opened his mouth to speak, he was free. In an instant the rooster had flown up to the branch of a tree. I did not intend to do anything wicked when I brought you out of the yard. Come down here and I shall explain what I mean! Come down I say - or I shall be offended. You shall flatter me no more. For I have learned my lesson — that pride comes before the fall. And that was the tale of the Rooster and the Fox, adapted from Chaucer by Bertie.

Chaucer wrote his Canterbury Tales in medieval English that is quite difficult for us to understand now. But his style is always lively and ironic.

Bertie has tried to keep some of the original flavour in our modern version. Ilovebertiethefrog — April 23, PrincessE — April 23, I did not enjoy the story as it was too slow and not interesting. D stars of smile while i have enjoyed a lot, the suspense is i taught that the rooster was killed but he was carried by fox,and a good moral. As he was being hanged, the roasted rooster appeared and stood up on the table in front of the crowd and crowed just as the pilgrim predicted.

The judged realized the mistake he had made and rushed to save the pilgrim. The cord was not correctly tightened and was able to easily be saved from his death sentence. Later, the pilgrim would return to Barcelos. He sculpted a cross in honor of the Virgin Mary and St. James, who he felt was responsible for saving him with the miracle of the rooster.

Today, this cross is referred to as the Cross of the Lord of the Rooster. This statue is still in existence in the Archeological Museum of Barcelos. The story of the legend can vary depending on the telling, although the main story about the roasted rooster declaring the pilgrim innocent. One variation claims that the pilgrim was a guest of the landowner and his banquet, which was where silver was stolen.

Another telling, the pilgrim was a guest at a local inn, and the owner of the inn falsely accused the pilgrim of the crime as a result of his own greed. In some legends the pilgrim is from Galicia, while others do not. In another story, there are two pilgrims that are father and son, and the son was convicted of the crime and the father called upon the rooster to crow.

If you wish to hear the story of Barcelos rooster told by a Portuguese please check our video: The story I heard while in Portugal recently, was that a pilgrim, a holy man, was suspected of stealing from a farmer as he made his passage.

Upon being bound and tethered and declared guilty, he protested his innocence and declared that if they wait to hang him, they will discover his innocence because the rooster will rise from the ashes of the cooking fire to crow his triumph over death. When this exact course of events happened and the rooster crowed at dawn from the ashes lying dormant beneath the cooking pot, the pilgrim was released. Furthermore, I had been lead to believe that the larger story that this principle illustrates, was that Portugal crowed its triumph over death when the Spanish, who held it hostage and in bondage, was overthrown.

The cats believed them and therefore worked from early morning until night for the roosters. One night, the fire on the house of Mrs. She told her kitten. Fluffy, to bring some fire from Mr.

The Rooster and the Fox

Rooster was fast asleep and his stomach swollen with the ants he had eaten. The kitten was afraid to wake the rooster, so she returned home empty handed and told her mother what had happened. Cat said, "Now that the rooster is asleep, gather some dry twigs and place them near his comb. AS soon as the twigs catch fire, bring them home.

He was still asleep. Fluffy fearfully put the dry twigs near the rooster's comb but it was no use. The twigs did not catch fire. Fluff rubbed the twigs against the rooster's comb again but it was no use they would not catch fire.
