That's the best part of the book. From her first book to this one, I have seen growth both in story and character. This book hit home close to family troubles, but gave a great ending. I'm also glad Jack is doing well with his new family. I'm ready for some real murder and teamwork to solve. Please help Charolette sorry for the spelling. Plot seems a little repetition of previous books, but still holds your interest until the end.

Took me a bit to figure it out and had to wait for the proof of who I thought was the bad guy. Love a story that makes it challenging to figure out who did it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a honest and freely given review. Apr 09, Sarah rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a prequel to a series I haven't yet read. The story itself centres on the disappearance of Anya Blonski who is a student at the Star academy, which is owned by the frosty Cleeves family.

Upon closer inspection Collins and MacKinnon discover she isn't the first student from the academy to disappear without trace. This story does lack some depth but I think this is due to the fact th This is a prequel to a series I haven't yet read. This story does lack some depth but I think this is due to the fact that it is mainly serving as an introduction to the characters and I hope future books will have more complex storylines as it was fairly obvious which direction the plot was taking.

It was an enjoyable read and I will be looking for the rest of the series. Aug 16, Seumas Gallacher rated it really liked it. I liked the simplicity of the story, with, not unexpectedly for a crime novel, some curve balls here and there, which made the read all the more interesting S Mackinnon is a main player worth followi S Mackinnon is a main player worth following, and I will enjoy reading more of him Oct 30, Gary Van Cott rated it liked it.

This book is a prequel but the book cover on the author's website says Book 1, so take your pick. I thought it was ok. The detectives are with the City of London Police. I thought the author should have spent some time describing how this force service differs from the Met. Jun 25, Patricia Mccammon rated it liked it. Good After reporting his sister missing, the brother is murdered.

DI Collins feels that he didn't do everything that he could. With DS MacKinnon helping they try to find out what happened to the girls.

Deadly Obsession (DS Jack Mackinnon #1) by D.S. Butler

The Black Tower (1975) - P. D. James - Audio Book - Crime Fiction, Mystery

When I noticed kindle editions by D. Butler, I first checked fantasticfiction. I noted she had written 4 books. Fortunately, that site and a reviewer made it clear that this book is a prequel. Thank you for that! The story line was intriguing, I liked the main characters, Mackinnon and Collins, well enough to give the continuing series another go. To me, police procedurals are as much, if not more, about the crime fighters as the crime at hand.

While this particular case of missing girls was, for some reason, not very tension filled, it read well and ended realistically. This prequel was written after the first in the series; presumably the author felt the back story of Mackinnon and Collins was important enough to fill it in.

I wouldn't put Ms. Butler in league with my considered greats- Stuart Pawson, Peter James, Karin Fossum - but her books are certainly readable. And the price was right: This book was very well plotted: The perpetrator is not readily identifiable -- not until very near the end when the detective realizes what is going on. Young girls have vanished from a dancing academy.
