- About — Canadian Police Chaplains Association?
But that has backfired in many situations. Now, police departments have grown to recognize the need for a more nuanced approach, including the spiritual skills of chaplains, along with therapists, if needed.
Mission Statement
Holden was a pastor of a church in Vineland, N. While some responded, Holden was one of 43 volunteers chosen, and chaplains were on duty 24 hours a day. He spent two days a week at Ground Zero in the months following that attack. Messick, a chaplain who is now a trainer, said that at Ground Zero, he would kneel and pray when remains were found; then five minutes later, he would be called upon to do it again.
In the aftermath of working at Ground Zero, a teenager in his church came to see him for help after breaking up with his girlfriend, he said. In the wake of a traumatic event, people can show mental signs of stress, increased alcohol consumption or turn to drugs, he said.

They can comfort victims afterward and also refer them to services for help. Even if an officer knows the couple and has been called to their house before, the situation can still turn dangerous, he said.
The process begins with months of specialized training.
