Be aware that although the same pieces are arranged for the different instruments, in most cases you cannot combine two books to create a mixed duet. So for example, the Brahms Lullaby is presented in C in the trombone book, and Bb in the French horn book. I suppose this choice was made to put the beginner part in as easy a range as possible, but it was a disappointment as I had checked for this as carefully as I could based on Amazon's "look inside" pages.
The harmony part is definitely for beginners, in many cases only using 2 or 3 different notes and very, very simple rhythm. One person found this helpful. Mozart is said to have written them in merry mood whilst playing skittles. They were first played in the skittle alley by his friend Leutgelb and his second horn player. On account of the unusually high range, particularly in the first part, not every horn player can discover inspiration and pleasure in these truly charming pieces.
